3. According to one page I found on W3c the "start" was deprecated in HTML4 and added back in HTML5. 3. I'm not sure how to make that work. From the example it appears that it increments at each iteration of the h3 tag. I can see it incrementing at each iteration of the li tag but I have dozens ordered lists and I only want one to increment this way. I don't know if you can do an "li class....... ". I haven't found anything that says I can or can't. It would have to be something like "li.sub:after {.......". Might be something to experiment with. I was kind of hoping for a simpler method like "ol start="3900.1" step=".1" " On 09/14/2013 11:19 AM, Joe Court wrote: > You could try using CSS to get the effect. > > <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Guide/CSS/Counters?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=CSS%252FCounters> > > Joe > Wakefield (UK) > > On 14 Sep 2013, at 16:54, Billie Walsh <bilwalsh@swbell.net> wrote: > >> I've been googling and reading but I can't find a way to get the >> incrementing that I want in lists. 3. Valerie, I'm glad you've found the method I suggested useful. With regard to Photoshop; many of the things that once could only be done with that type of software have now become achievable using current browsers, HTML5, CSS3 and advanced features under development by the various browser vendors. 3. Many thanks, Barry, for your help, which has worked brilliantly on several of my images. I only wish I had been aware of how to do this before adding text to the photo itself, which makes everything look much more cluttered. I don't use Photoshop, although a very similar one. However it doesn't have the facility of linking up thumbnail images with larger ones, which would be helpful. I have always used the "target="blank" code to open in a new window. I am in the process of updating my web pages, the link to which is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/photogallery_8.htm in order to dispense with text on the page itself, to give a more streamlined look. 3. A simple example can be seen at:- http://countjustonce.com/test/family-img-map.html It works in all browsers back to the IE6 era. The pseudo :after {content:"some text"} doesn't work in IE6, IE7 and IE10, but does in IE8, IE9 and IE11. You probably don't need that anyway, as I did it just as an acknowledgement of where the image came from. Any page using the tag as a block level element, i.e. display:block will need to be in HTML5, just as the example page is. Simple, eh? 3. Valerie, It is possible to do what you want, and there a number of ways to do it. I will give you a general description of one method. 1.. Place the large image as a background in a div. 2.. Style the div as position:relative; 3.. For each person you wish to identify, create an tag. 4.. All tags to have a separate id and title attribute (person's name) and to be styled - position:absolute; z-index:10; display:block; height:??px;width:??px; background:transparent; 5.. For alignment purposes the top left corner of each tag is positioned relative to the top left corner of the containing
. In order that you can see where these tags are, temporarily add outline:solid 1px #f00; to their styles. Experiment by adding left:100px; top:75px; to the styles and adjust to get each id right> 6.. Finally, you can make use of the pseudo class a:hover, so that when you hover over each person they are highlighted, i.e. the background of the tag changes to white and is given opacity:0.2; etc.. 7.. When hovering over a particular person, the description in the title attribute will show beside the cursor/pointer. You can also use the link feature to open a url related to that person. The above is just a general description, and it does involve a little work. 3. Thanks Ralph - I had actually written to the list and said that I had sorted it out now.
