You have db value=~jlvolker It should be db value="jlvolker" Pat A.

I made sure the "ancestry" word was removed from the url in the cod, but I still cannot get it to go to my database. It just goes to the main search box page. Judy, Take a good look at what the actual code is on the page. You say that you have ALT="Florence May etc..", but the validator is saying that is NOT the case. Check that the ALT is really there. Barry
(Note: I removed the surnames and city so it doesn't come up in RW List Searches.) I want to clarify this so I can write other pages right. Should I always put a p in front of img class= or just assume the p exists before an img class ? I don't understand why it would matter whether it is a /p after the image line...or a br. Can anyone explain why I got the errors below... Validator hollers with <....img class="imgrgt" src="images/rockey-florence-mae-brockway-glass.jpg" ALT="Florence May Rockey" width="150" height="173"> <...br> <----THIS. You should be able to center a paragraph within the box or use em with no problem. Try it and see, that is the best way to learn. I tend to use percentages for the width of the divs and add padding in pixels. Try wwhat you want and see how it displays in the various browser windows. Resize your browser window to see what happens as the viewport gets smaller. See http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_boxmodel.asp and http://css-tricks.com/the-css-box-model/ pat

Pat A & Pat G, Does the same code work to go to a specific page of someone's Ancestry.com tree? Judy
Pat, That <....br style="clear: left"> fixed the Preview presentation problems and the ability to use a regular ul on the same page as class bookindx. However, since the regular ul uses a different font, I decided to re-use the class... and still used the br style clear.... Both big and little lists are working and presenting just fine now in Preview. I guess Frontpage just needed the br clear as a 'loudspeaker' to yell at it "the big list code is over & done..., let's do something else now." Question: If I do bookindx at 45% width (90% overall) then, do I need to make the padding 5% right (total 10%) -- or will the bookindx just adjust itself to total 100% ? Is the notice box restricted to just a few lines? Can other code like p class center or em be used inside the notice box? When I insert code around text and put it into that box, the text drops to below/outside the notice box. Still have some tweaking to do but here is the new page: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/zcurr-css-test-2013/lane_bk1_test.htm Judy

Judy, What you are attempting to do is easiest achieved by placing everything in one bug list. That might seem a difficult proposition when confronted with all the MS Word mark-up, but what you want is something equivalent to that which is currently rendering. So, I copied & pasted the index of names (as rendered) into a spreadsheet. I noted that each family group name was separated from the previous group by a line space and used the vacant line as a reference in a formula to place an <li> tag to the left on every line except the line immediately following the line-space, which had <li class="surname"> inserted. A small code sample follows:- <!--// <style> body {font-size:1em} ul { font-family:'Courier New',adobe-courier,Courier; font-size:85%; list-style:none; margin-left:10px; padding-left:0 } li.surname { font-weight:bold; margin-top:15px } </style> <ul> <li class='surname'> ABSHER <li> Mary Frances (Lane) Absher, 130 <li> <li class='surname'> ADAMS <li> Florence Olive (Carks) Adams, S-6, S-10 <li> Helen (Adams) Garber, 112 <li> <li class='surname'> AINSWORTH, 39 all <li> Alexander Scott Ainsworth <li> Elizabeth Ann Ainsworth <li> Gayle Ainsworth <li> Judith Ann (Lane) Ainsworth <li> Michael Edward Ainsworth <li> Michelle Lee (Macke) Ainsworth <li> Scott Bradley Ainsworth <li> <li class='surname'> ANDREWS <li> Nancy (Andrews) Bradshaw, 114 </ul> //--> You'll note the empty lines also have an <li> tag, but that's not a problem as the line just collapses when it is empty. With over 1300 lines of code, to start meddling would be a big task! The code is validated HTML5. The font-size has been set as 1em (16px) in the body and renders at 85% of that (~14px) in the list. I've attached a copy of the file by separate email. I'm looking for the html code to point to my guestbook form. On my home page I only want the guestbook sign, not the whole form. I've created a separate web page for this, but cannot get the two to link up. Valerie
Using Pat Asher's stie as an example <.....form method="post" action="http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi" target="_blank"> <.....table style="border: 3px solid rgb(175, 188, 35);" bgcolor="white" border="0" cellpadding="12" cellspacing="0" width="350"> <....tr> <....td align="center" bgcolor="white" nowrap="nowrap"> <img alt="RootsWeb" src="graphics/logo_trees.gif" height="56" width="240"><br><font face="Arial"><b>Search the VOLKER DATABASE</b></font> <...input name="db" value="jlvolker" type="hidden"> <........input name="op" value="SRCH" type="hidden"><br><br> <.......input name="surname" size="25" type="text"><input name="submit" value="List" type="submit"> </td> </tr> </table> </form> appears to work. The more complext your code gets and the more css you use, th emore you are going to see this in FP. FP (any version does not even give you a doctype statement to start your page. As long as your page displays in the browser or browsers and validates, you are probably going to have to live with the quirks of the program. I believe you are using FP2000 which was released in 1999 - eons ago in the web development world. ===================== >2. On class .bookindx regarding the 40% width... Can that be 45% or even >48% ? =============== You can experiment with the width BUT be sure and check your page display in several different browsers. If you want some spacing within the divs, you can add some padding. If you just want padding on one side add padding-right: 10px; to the style rules for the .bookindx div. .bookindx { font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; float: left; width: 40%; padding-right: 10px; } Remember, this is going to add padding to the right side of both divs. ===================== >4. Lastly, with the div class bookindx used in a page and enclosed in div >/div, then, why won't just a regular ul work on the same page? There is no need to put any kind of class on the ul or li within the bookindx div. The list picks up the styles from the div and supporting rules. If you want the Other Persons Mentioned list to use regular list styles, you should not have to do anything. If you want them to look like the list above enclose them in the div with class bookindx applied. If you want them to look different then create another set of style rules following the way I did the bookindx ones. >How would I do this 2nd list? Does a list 2 need a completely different >class name to work? > >Also does this mean I will always need to present lists by using bookindx > ... or can I make regular ul on other pages? =============== See http://www.css-layouts.org/florian-family/book-index2.html which was updated with what it looks like you want. Regular lists should work as regular lists UNLESS they are within a div with class bookindx applied. pat
