    3. To explain why Tracy's advice, "Hit the refresh button", is good. Your web browser has probably stored old copies of the newly-revised pages on your computer and -- to save download time -- accesses those copies before going out to the Internet to get the new copies. A refresh command tells the browser to reload the pages from the source. -rt_/) Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2017 18:51:05 -0500 From: "Tracy MacAllister" <[email protected]> To: "'Freepages Web Sites'" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Update to my project pages didn't take Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Try hitting the refresh symbol up at the top, usually top left of the browser address input area. It is the symbol that looks like a circle with an arrow at the end of it. Or look at the page from a different computer.

    3. I have another question before I try to do all of this. What happens if I do nothing? ======== Then, it will be as it is now. Visitors would need to know the exact URLs to access each page (remember, your "front / home page" links need fixed because the url was changed to index.htm or html). I do understand the hassle of fixing a site. I did an overhaul of my first 6 sites-- what a pain, but I learned so much! I especially learned bad code and what not to do. Then, I started working on my 7th and last web--- I'm frustrated so it has taken me much longer. Still not done. Sigh. Too old for this--lolol. Nobody will make you fix it. But it'll bug you, like my 7th site bugs me. I know I need to "fix it". Judy

Not quite. Filezilla is not an Editor.   Make sure you have all your folders and files on your PC. Make sure all folders and files use - or _ instead of spaces.  Spaces make "%20" which can break URLs. Try to use lowercase letters in everything.   On the Internet, Kincaid is not the same as kincaid.   Lowercase lessens the chance of URL problems. Take the time NOW to clean up URLs and links.   You will love yourself later. Don't forget to make a file called "index.htm or html" in every folder you make.  Use these as mini front doors, or direction pages ("Return to the Main Page".  I use mine for genealogy humor on the same template which also gives links back to main areas.   Other uses:  Trivia ; Special Photo ; Research Tips ; etc.   I tried 404s and 403s.... but telling people "Forbidden" was not friendly. When you have all of your site on your PC, a free program called Xenu can help you find your broken links.   It really helps you "see" like Google sees your site. One tip I give, also, consider using a footer that contains your name.   Then, it is easy to find all your pages in google ---   freepages+kincaid    Judy | | Virus-free. www.avg.com |

That is the only way visitors to your site will be able to find the other pages on your site. Cleaning up file names, e.g. changing to all lower case, eliminating spaces, etc. is desirable because some browsers (not all, but some) browsers will have problems executing hyperlink reference commands (links) containing incorrectly named files. Changing to all lower case is not absolutely necessary as long as you remember to write your links to the eXaCT file names you have used. In fact, I sometimes use upper case letters intentionally so I don't need to insert a spacer in the name, for example "smithJohn.jpg" and "smithRobert.jpg" or "smithRobert-Mary.jpg" However, the majority of web servers are case sensitive, so if you write a link to a file as <.a href="kincaide.html"> when the file is actually named "Kincaide.html," the link will not work. See Naming Web Pages <http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/naming.htm> Judy's suggestions about using Xenu and having your name (and hopefully an email link) on all of your pages are things you can work on after you get your basic site working. I did mine straight away, and it has been working fine. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~derekboddington/no-guestbook.html I don't know whether the original Guestbook pages still exist on the server, nor whether they might be retrievable by FTS.
