    3. I have recommended it many times. If you can write HTML give Bluefish a go. http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/index.html https://bfwiki.tellefsen.net/index.php/Installing_Bluefish#Installing_Bluefish_on_Windows_XP_or_newer It is a much better  choice than Notepad. Any page that you have uploaded to your account can be accessed for viewing in your browser by entering the correct URL in the address bar of your browser. To allow visitors to your site to view your pages, you must give them the correct URLs for the pages you have uploaded. You do this by placing links to your various pages on your home/index page. Open the copy of your index page on your computer in a text editor such as Notepad. Add a link to the first page you want to be able to access. Instructions for adding a link to a page are here <http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/basichtml.htm#links> Save the page with newly added link. Upload the revised page to your account with Filezilla. As long as the file name is the eXacTly the same, it will overwrite the existing page on the server. Repeat, adding additional links as required to link all your pages of research. Pat A.

    3. Pat and Free Page helpers, Thank you so much for this help. I have been following this as I am "lost" also and do not have time (or ability) for a lot of editing right now. 3. I have a Kincaid Research page on Free pages that I can no longer access except through Filezilla. I spent years compiling the information and organizing it so Kincaid surname researchers could find their ancestors. ------------------ I'm getting annoyed. You say you can no longer access your site--- untrue-- but you aren't understanding the basics of webmaking. Basics of what you need 1. An offline Editor to create HTML pages. Or, use Notepad to write your own code. 2. A host, like Freepages via Rootsweb via Ancestry.com Or through GoDaddy or another host. 3. An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) method / software, like Filezilla (Free!). TRUE - Rootsweb provided all 3 of these in one very old, very clumsy "coded page" within their site structure. But it was very old, very clumsy, outdated, not very useful. It did little to help teach new folks, except getting the visual hang of how files sit in folders, how sub-folders can be in top folders, etc. YOU DO have access to your website IF 1. You have saved it OFFline on your PC 2. You know your user ID and password -- and information so you can FTP and 3. You have designed your site so "home page" is named "index.htm" or "index.html" and you know your main URL... and you create good links from that page. . So, please say why you think you cannot access your website? Judy

In my part of the >world it would be exceptional and exceptionable. It's complicated <g> And please forgive me if I wander a bit down memory lane. The RootsWeb of today is a totally different concept than RootsWeb as it was created. The original RootsWeb was created by Brian Leverich and his wife, Karen Isaacson. Until 2001, they personally provided the financial support for the RootsWeb infrastructure. While they eventually changed the organizational concept so they could accept charitable contributions, as you can imagine, user contributions did not begin to provide adequate financial support. Nevertheless, RootsWeb became an important player in the early on line genealogical community. Enter the commercial enterprise, Ancestry.com, who purchased "RootsWeb" as an adjunct to their effort to create a financially viable source for on line genealogical information. So now we have a different perspective to the entity known as RootsWeb. Does providing free web space produce an offsetting increment to Ancestry's bottom line? Can the information it contains be sold? Does it bring in new Ancestry.com subscribers? Can it be written off as a loss-leader, i.e it creates good will? As to discontinued web-hosting features, the last entry to my guestbook was in 2008. The experiences of others may differ but guestbooks may be just one more victim of social media. Many of today's researchers use Facebook and other social media interactions instead. Online calendars have been an anachronism for years. Genealogy Forum had not been updated since 2008. The RootsWeb Surname List is another feature that had passed its prime. Many Freepages users relied on the on line File Manager, but there have always been better ways to update a website. Though sometimes uncomfortable, the necessity to learn something new is not always bad :) While U.K. laws may differ from U.S. laws, it is hard for me to imagine any democratic country imposing a requirement for corporations or privately held companies to operate in order to "benefit" a limited demographic of the country's population instead of the owners and/or shareholders of the company. IOW, Ancestry.com will always be looking at their bottom line. If their bottom line includes providing free web space for you and me, I'm all in favor. Pat A.

    3. To address Caroline's question, Part of this stems from American corporate culture. Some changes are made to products absent any input from line employees or the customer. I observed this in legal publishing. I just saw an advertisement for Ancestry.com of which rootsweb is a part, on national television on Sunday last. They are advertising everywhere on the internet. They can afford all of this advertising yet they are retiring some products for lack of update. Sometimes changes occur in corporate structures because a new suit in charge identifies what are drags on the product line regardless of how popular or useful to the customer they are. I have a Kincaid Research page on Free pages that I can no longer access except through Filezilla. I spent years compiling the information and organizing it so Kincaid surname researchers could find their ancestors. But I understand the corporate structure, once the suits decide to cut something or off-shore work, they are committed to that course of action regardless of consequences to customers or employees or as in our case, voluntarily compiled and freely distributed information, which they now call their product. Anyway, I can empathize with your concern and displeasure with the recent developments on Rootsweb. 3. Glenn, I empathize with your frustration. Learning new software is tough. Often the manuals assume you know something that that you don't. Pat G gave excellent advice but I want to come at it from the beginner point of view. Before you can use Expression Web to edit your site, you -- FIRST! -- need a copy of it on your own computer. That may mean you need to download it from the remote site. Once it's on your computer, you can edit the pages. Then you can "publish" or upload the revised pages to the remote (freepages) site. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol; it's a standard for transferring files (such as web sites and pages) from one computer to another. Filezilla only does transfers;, either from your computer to the remote host or vice versa. Expression Web will publish (upload) to the the remote site; not so clear on downloading. To either upload or download successfully, you MUST get the settings right -- especially directories, user ID and password. This is hardest the first time around; once it works, don't change any of them My advice: Come back to the list with each problem as you encounter it. But, this is doable; don't give up. -rt_/) Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2017 08:52:16 +0000 (UTC) From: Glen peddy <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] FREEPAGES-HELP Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Since early July when Ancestry announced that they were discontinuing their file manager I tried Expression Web and FileZilla. So far ZERO progress through Filezilla. I've had some small success through Expression Web. After several HOURS working I was able to make some HTML changes in http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Etnchest2/peoplechester.html for Bailey and Baldy. I then wanted to upload some obits to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnchest2/obits.html. This I was UNABLE to do. A few days ago I was able to add obits to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnchest2/obitsone/obitsm.html When I wanted to add obits to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Etnchest2/obitsone/obitsc.html NO success. I have bought 3 books for Expression Web and copied and read all I can find on the Internet. All of these tell me - in great detail how to start a web site. I HAVE a web site. what I want to now is how do I ADD one obit to the correct page, then another obit to a different surname page, then add tombstone details to a particular cemetery. (That site is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Etnchest2/cemetery.html ) HOW DO I SET UP either Expression Web or FileZilla so that I can ADD one obit at a time under the correct Surname, names to different Cemeteries, information to Communities or People? ? Filezilla is a FTP client which allows you to upload pages up to your web hosting account from your computer or download the pages from your hosting account to your computer. YOU CANNOT EDIT YOUR SITE WITH FILEZILLA. Expression Web on the other hand is a html editor which allows you to design your site, maintain it and publish it to your remote server. Have you already created a site within EW that contains the pages and associated files for your site? If so, then you simply edit the pages, and republish those pages to your server. When I wanted to add obits to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Etnchest2/obitsone/obitsc.html NO success. How are you trying to add information to the above page? If the page is part of your site on YOUR computer, then you should be able to simply edit the page, adding obits to it, saving the page then republish it. What is NOT working when you do this? What error messages do you receive? Please check and see if when you to Site from the top menu > then site settings > check and see if Maintain the site using hidden metadata files is checked. 3. Pat, This is regarding editing of my website, or a setting issue(so, somehow related to this conversation). I downloaded my website to my computer, I edit with notepad2, and upload changes and additions to website with Filezilla. but, when I send someone a link from my website, it seems like they(and me) can't use the browser 'back' option to get back to the email. Do I have some setting messed up? Thanks, Tom On Tue, Oct 31, 2017 at 3:00 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: > Send FREEPAGES-HELP mailing list submissions to > [email protected] > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists9.rootsweb.ancestry.com/mailman/listinfo/ > freepages-help > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > [email protected] > > You can reach the person managing the list at > [email protected] > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of FREEPAGES-HELP digest..." > > > When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to > which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. > Remember to change the subject of your reply so that it coincides with the > message subject to which you are replying. > ***FREEPAGES HELP & FAQ*** > <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/fpindex.html> > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. Like many of you, I have been trying to keep up with the torrent of discontinued/retired services announced by RootsWeb/Ancestry for their free web hosting services. I have published a list at <http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~pasher/> and will try to keep it current. Pat Asher

    3. Glenn, Expression Web and Filezilla are two completely different programs. If it is not, then check it. Pat G

    3. Glenn, Expression Web and Filezilla are two completely different programs. 3. If you are using Surname Helper on your USGenWeb site, this announcement currently appears at <http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com> "In an ongoing effort to focus RootsWeb resources on World Connect, Mailing Lists and hosted sites such as Free Pages, we are retiring features that are not heavily used and have not been maintained over the years. "On Nov 6th, we will be retiring Surname Helper (<http://surhelp.rootsweb.ancestry.com>http://surhelp.rootsweb.ancestry.com) "Thanks you for your support and patience as we work at improving RootsWeb." 3. Since early July when Ancestry announced that they were discontinuing their file manager I tried Expression Web and FileZilla. ? I, also have a PEDDY SURNAME site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~peddy/index.html which I not even tried to add information to, even though I could IF I knew how.

    3. Just found this message on the Rootsweb homepage: "As you know, RootsWeb is a collection of products that has grown organically over the last two decades. Many of these have not been updated or maintained in years. Ancestry is currently working on updating and revising World Connect, Mailing Lists, and hosted sites such as **Free Pages** over the next twelve months; however, all other products and functionality are under review. We will continue to notify you of updates here as decisions are made." -- Regards, Ann. 3. I found the issue. My file names start with an uppercase letter but the ones in the rootsweb folder are all lowercase for some reason. So I had to delete the lowercase version and rename my new file to remove the first uppercase letter.
