Anyone else having trouble logging into FileZilla? Several times today I have tried to log in to add my new directory and have not been able to. I get the message: Connection attempt failes with "ECONNREFUSED - connection refused by server". Lon Mason
Here's how I do it with Windows 7, Frontpage & WS_FTP (another FTP utility). First I use Windows Explorer to create the new sub-directory on my local computer, within the main directory for the site. My Web editor (Frontpage) isn't open at this point.) Then I open Frontpage; voila, it recognizes the new directory and does its indexing thing. Next step, create the files in the directory and/or move files into it. Closing Frontpage, I open WS_FTP and connect to the site. I click on the directory nanme on my local system and upload the whole directory and its files to the remote site. -rt_/)
I agree with Judy. If you are using Dreamweaver to create and edit your pages, use that program to create your sub-directories and pages to maintain the links needed for your files. If you then want to use Filezilla to publish the files to your freepages space you can then transfer the entire sub-directory folder. pat -----Original Message----- From: FREEPAGES-HELP [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of JFlorian via FREEPAGES-HELP Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2017 12:02 AM To: Freepages Web Sites <[email protected]> Cc: JFlorian <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Creating new sub-directory? Fine for me also with Chrome. Lon, To create a new directory on Freepages with Filezilla, navigate to your ~hazlett/ directory on Freepages. Then put your cursor somewhere in the white space in the directory list and "right click" with your mouse. Select "create new directory", then type in the name of the new directory. Then, to upload files to the new directory, double click on the new directory name, then upload your files into it. When you upload files at any time with Filezilla, the files will be uploaded to the Freepages directory which shows in the Filezilla menu (right-hand side of the screen) regardless of what directory the files are in on your computer (left-hand side of the screen). Hope this helps. Charlie Dobie. I have a Freepages site at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hazlett/ I want to add a new sub-directory called USREY to the site, but am confused about how to do it with this new system with Freepages. I am using FileZilla to transfer files and Dreamweaver to creat them. I have tried to upload 3 pages "UsreyDesc.html", "UsreyDesc2.html", and "UsreyDesc3.html" to my site. When I upload them they end up on the main ~hazlett directory, not the USREY directory. When I use FileZilla to access them to make changes, it gets the pages on the main directory. What am I doing wrong? I'm about ready to go into therapy after spending hours trying to correct this mistake! Thanks for any assistance. Lon Mason

I think I said that exporting as HTML wasn't pretty. Code or looks. I know first hand what a PITA cleaning up bad code from an export can be. That's where a good text based HTML editor comes in handy. You can do mass cuts, and pastes, over a whole page all at one time. Styling isn't quite so bad because that can be called from a external style sheet. On 11/17/2017 04:15 PM, Ralph Taylor via FREEPAGES-HELP wrote: > Yes, Billie. Excel will export to HTML. Re: "I don't know squat about Excel but won't it export a file as HTML?" Yes, Billie. Excel will export to HTML. The problems are two-fold 1. Code bloat: As is typical for Microsoft, the resulting HTML file is unduly large. 2. Styling mismatches: The styling inserted by Microsoft isn't necessarily what you want for your site. It is, instead, what Microsoft's programmers think you want. This can change the "look and feel" of your site. OR, you could "print" to a free-standing PDF document -- if an Acrobat update hasn't wiped out the printer definition. Barry's method -- inserting columns for table cell tags and saving as text -- is cleaner. The resulting file is smaller and free of undesired styling. And, the file can be included in or copied and pasted to a web page. I still use Excel (two older versions) extensively; most people I share files with have it. And I know most of its idiosyncrasies, so it's faster to work in. I do a fair amount of quantitative analysis; spreadsheet calculation features are essential to the work. For example, I'm now working on a Bayesian approach to "yDNA convergence", which requires chaining together several different kinds of variables. However, as far as publishing the results to the website, most folks are interested only in the final product, not the detailed calculations. -rt_/)
Al, A good find. It seems to create a basic table fairly well, and if it suits your needs, then use it. One proviso - the program produces the table and embedded styles, but those items need to be incorporated into a standard HTML page, e.g. http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/test/tableizer-layout.html When you've tried it, get back to the list if there are issues you need help with fixing. Billie, Good point! I haven't used MS Excel for years, though use derivative Open Office or Libre Office instead. On checking with Libre Office, have found that it will export in .pdf format, but not HTML. Ralph, Depends on how you want the data presented. A .xls file when viewed in Excel gives the user the opportunity to sort data if required; a .xml just presents the data as per the .xls standard view. On the other-hand, an HTML table of the original data can be made to be user sortable, i.e. sort all rows in descending or ascending order per a selected column. Yes, it can be cumbersome, but Excel is a relatively easy medium in which to construct table cells around the data. I find that inserting columns and adding the </td><td> cells etc. gives the essential HTML mark-up in a few minutes. All depends on what you are after. I don't know squat about Excel but won't it export a file as HTML? I've used spreadsheet programs to do that in the past. As a general rule the HTML isn't very pretty but................ Barry, I have a question (sort of) related to Al's. Sometimes, converting an Excal spreadsheet to an HTML table is cumbersome. I've wondered whether XML would work. Could you comment? -rt_/)
Al, When you raised this issue in mid October, my response to you was to request you place the .xls/.pdf file on the server and send a link to that file to this list. That way a considered opinion could be given on whether an HTML table of a .pdf file would be a viable option. I'm not sure whether the Rootsweb server will accept a .xls file, but try in any case. You can always change the .xls extension to .txt and send that file to the server. But until I have seen the contents of either the .pdf or .xls file I am not in a position to offer any advice.
