    3. Janice, They had a security issue. They could not / should not leave the hole(s) open with a message like, "We'll leave the service open until Feb 1st 2018"-- that's just silly. Like your bank calling you to say "We notice unusual activity-- but oh, we'll just ignore it until you come into the bank the next time.... whenever that is." THAT would be inexcusable. Wait a couple weeks, then call Ancestry. You'll be told they do not control Rootsweb.... but I always feel a little better after I gripe at them and insist that Ancestry "must" support Rootsweb (as if my voice matters LOL).. Judy

    3. Directions-- 1. Use a web editor to write what you want to appear. Put it however you want it to appear. 2. Add a link to the New Page. Add a link to the Obits page. 3. SAVE pages on your computer. Upload 1. Open Filezilla. Connect. 2. Click the RW folder tnchest2 on right so you are "in" your site. 3. Look on left--- navigate to the files on your PC. NOTE: MATCH right and left. If you need a folder called "boohoo", then this boohoo folder must show on both sides. *If boohoo does not yet exist online, then upload the whole folder. 4. Highlight one, both consecutive , or all consecutive files. OR highlight a folder on left. Double check that your right-left sides match. Then-- Right click.... Choose upload. 5 Upload both the obits.html and the new file (if any). OR upload the whole folder. 6. Go to the page on the Internet. If the new info does not show, press F5 to refresh the live page. If these directions are no help, then please be specific about what is wrong. Judy

    3. As an alternative: BlazeFTP - free and never a problem. Modify the page on your computer, and save Open Blaze, click "Connect" Your PC in the left-hand window, Rootsweb directories in the right-hand pane. In Rootsweb window: open the destination directory In your PC window: select files to upload (+ shift if consecutive, + Ctrl if non-consecutive) Right mouse button click "Upload" If a file exists onsite, there will be the option "overwrite" to OK - or "overwrite all" if you're sure. Wait for the complete Rootsweb directory listing to reappear: job done, close BlazeFTP. It is now a two step process. You edit a page (insert an obit in the correct alphabetical location) by editing a copy of the page located on your computer. After editing, you then use your FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload the edited page to the server. For editing, I assume you are going to be more comfortable using a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor similar to the on line File Manager. For that, I suggest you might prefer Kompozer to Expression Web. I do not recommend you use Kompozer to upload the edited page(s). Filezilla is better for that. But for ease of editing requiring no knowledge of HTML, it works just fine -- and is free. See http://www.kompozer.net/ Pat Asher

    3. I never used the old Rootsweb method. For years I used WS_FTP LE, which was free. However, they got rid of the free version. I tried Filezilla and just could not get used to it or get it working right, so I bit the bullet and spend the money on the full version of WS-FTP. It is pricey, but you can download a trial version to see what it's like first. 3. Glen, it sounds to me like you are trying to publish a single obit and have it magically appear in alphabetical order on a page that is already published. If so, EW does not work that way. You will need to open the page of obits on YOUR computer, say this page http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnchest2/obitsone/obitsd.html Type in the obit where you want it to appear on the page, then republish that particular page. Charles has given you in a previous post what you need to set up EW. 3. Glen, I did recently succeed in getting EW4 set up so that I can now publish with it. It was not my first choice, but the latest update of Firefox has destroyed my ability to use the well loved (by me anyway :-)) fireFtp extension. The following settings are under the Site tab, then select Publishing Settings, then the Publishing tab. Here are the generalized values on my Publishing Settings page: Site Name: My Web Site (I just chose this. I think it can be anything you like.) Connection Type: FTP Location: ftp://YourSite'sURL Directory: (blank) User Name: YourUserName Password: YourPassword Maximum simultaneous connections: 4 (Might need to be adjusted.) Use Passive FTP: (checked) That's it. I think I did have to first go to Site > Create Site before I could enter the above settings. I seem to recall the Publishing Settings was grayed out until I did that. Once I had created it though, it was relatively easy to enter the parameters above and get it working. I wish now I had paid more attention to what I did when I created the site so I could give you more specific guidance here, but at the time I was just struggling to get it to work. Leaving the Directory entry blank takes you to the highest level directory on the host side, but you can easily navigate to the specific folder you want to work on from there. This has been mentioned here many times before, and you may already be well aware of it, but I cannot emphasize too strongly how important it is to make your directory structure identical on the local and host sides. It just avoids a world of possible confusion! Once you do that, if you go to View > Site > Publishing and click on "Connect to the current publishing destination" you should see the local files on the left side of your screen and the host ones on the right side. There is also a little Connect icon at the top of the Site View window but it's sort of tough to see which one to use. Hope this helps. -- Charlie Carothers http://www.freebiblecommentary.org <http://freebiblecommentary.org>

    3. I agree with Charles Carothers. I've again tried to get Expression web or Filezilla to work. For the last two days I've spent more than 10 hours that has proven to be a waste of time. Since July 2017 I've added almost nothing. If I still had the old method from Rootsweb I would have added more than 100 obits in alphabetical order to the web site. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnchest2/obits.html Since August 1 2017 I've tried for at least 120 hours - what a waste of time so far. I just want to add one Obit at a time in alphabetical order to the correct page. The old Rootsweb method was relatively simple.
