Re: "PLEASE HAVE ANCESTRY DELETE ALL OF THE INFORMATION THAT I HAVE UPLOADED." Am I correct in thinking that this is essentially what will happen if one does nothing? That Ancestry will not re-publish the site? That it will not move the site's content from its stored place to one accessible on the Web? So, that's not exactly the saem as deleting the information; Ancestry may still have it. It is, though, no longer publicly viewable. But, I should point out that a request on this list is not the same as a request to Ancestry. We here are all just "users" like you. -rt_/)
As usual, Pat is correct. :-) We do NOT and will NOT charge people to see Freepages or WorldConnect or Mailing Lists. The weird redirect is just something weird that is happening because those sites are not up at the moment. If you do not wish to bring your site back up, that is fine. If you wish to learn how to use FileZilla or some other FTP site. That is your choice as well. It is your content. If everything is above board, why are people who try to access our web pages redirected? Like Judy my pages were receiving high ranking with Google search, on top of that people who already know my site will get sent to the Ancestry page and understandably think my sites no longer exist. Instead of sending people to the Ancestry site it would be better if they were sent to a 'Site Temporarily Unavailable' message. Warwick Sherring
Quote; I just tried two of my sites and both connected me to Ancestry. -- Cough -- Sites have always had banners "connected to" Ancestry. Ancestry is like our Internet-Adopting Family They been "taking care of" all the websites in our Family of Origin (so to speak) e.g. Rootsweb. Rootsweb couldn't afford to take care of all of us before, so Ancestry stepped in like a long-lost rich great Aunt & Uncle. Reminds me of a cable company's advertising where they declare they are "good" and all other providers are "evil"..... so, "Ancestry, good!" They adopted all of us. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping Ancestry gives us all verrrry nice Christmas presents to make it up to us for being such patient girls and boys! (Hint, hint, Ancestry!). LOL Maybe a free package to access Ancestry??-- hint hint, please. Judy
Oh, thank God for Anne Mitchell being on the List! I and others keep trying to reduce the panic--- to no avail. So you tell them:: No Ancestry is not going to - keep our sites - steal our content - make us pay for sites that have been free - never return our sites - only make our sites available for some to view now - lock us out permanently However, Anne, I would like to say that (besides all of people's complaints about missing our sites) I am dismayed that this security issue has knocked many sites out of the SEO ranking in Google Search that we previously enjoyed. Disappointing, after working so hard to get a #1 to top 10 result. My sites' pages (RW & freepages) used to fill Google's first few pages! As the guy in an early Jurassic movie said, "Must go faster! Must go faster!!" HURRY, Ancestry, as you'all walk slowly through the web-terrains. smile Judy. .
Yes I see that as well. But I guess I am more trusting and realized that this is not what they were intending. They are working on the websites hosted on RootsWeb in order to get them back online. You'll probably see a lot of strange things going on as they do so, but what you see right now has nothing to do with making it a pay site or stealing anyone's materials.
