Judy, if you want to make a change, now is the time to do it. As of now, our sites have lost any kind of Google ranking they had. So it depends on how much work you want to put into it. I personally prefer the galleries for displaying images or many images. Not sure how this one works with various size images. The page I did was just a quickie so you could see how it looked. I need a way to communicate with people on lists and now a whole variety of hosted sites, so I've set up a RootsWeb blog. You can find it at http://rootsweb.blog I'll still be on the list, but it seems better to have a more centralized place to make announcements. Anne
I can't promise your sites won't disappear for six months again. Because you know if I do that, something will go horribly wrong :-) But our intent is never again to go down for that long. And now I've borrowed trouble. RootsWeb had been allowed to run for a very long time without any kind of real supervision and thought on how to maintain it and make it secure. Judy, is this what you are trying to do? http://www.css-layouts.org/photo-gallery/index.html How many images across is going to depend on the viewport the person has available. On my 17" screen, I can see all four images in a row. Resizing the screen, changes how many images are in each row. On the suggestion of other webmasters, I took out the target="_blank" on all my webpages. So, should I remove it from the gallery page code, too? The problem with coding for 4 (or any number) of boxes across is that not every device viewing your website has the same screen width . On a phone, the screen is probably only 1 box wide, so the user will have to scroll sideways to see the others. What I do is code the divs to display inline-block and then let the screen width control how many boxes or photos are displayed per line. For example, see this page -- https://www.atikokanhistory.org/ahs-yearbook-gr11c-1980-81.htm (this used to be a freepages website but I couldn't wait for them). My desktop computer displays the above link at 5 photos per row in full screen width, but if I make the window smaller (narrower) then the number of photos is less per row. You could put each photo in a table, but it's easier for google if you put each photo and caption into a containing div and make each div display inline-block. Control the width of each div with a "max-width" value, not a "width", because "width" will force the box width to that value even if it is wider than your display window width (thus forcing a horizontal scan to view all of it) but "max-width" will allow your browser to shrink the photo or box to fit the window width if necessary. My CSS code for the containing div is: div.photocontainer { display: inline-block; max-width: 320px; } And if it is really important for you to have 4 boxes across regardless, then keep the same CSS code as above and simply put a <br> after every 4th box. Have fun, Charlie Dobie. State and County xxxGenWeb are on Rootsweb accounts. Freepages is whatever the person wanted to do, genealogy-wise. So, my Rootsweb site is Washington Co PAGenWeb. But the directories I use in my Freepages account are also about Washington Co PA (just not xxxGenWeb). Other people use their Freepages accounts for a specific township... or family... or school... etc. And. Just because someone put up their RW sites somewhere else while frustrated doesn't mean they are off the RW server, or that they won't come back. RW just needs to lay on the reassurances for those folks & all of us--- like, no more disappearing sites for over 6 months. I was one of the few who preached cool heads. I'm still willing to give Ancestry another go ; I'd rather stay than leave. But I do hope we get some definitives about how we were always told our sites would remain forever, even if we died, etc. (Please don't make me dig through my AOL mail to find examples. Hi, All, I began posting my information in earnest shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. My site was in the form of a genealogy report and contains thousands of names of my ancestors and allied families. These families include one line that goes back to within a few months of the founding of New Orleans in 1718, as well as some information from seventeenth century Montreal and sixteenth century Spain and Germany. The site included information from original research that had never before been published.. I had relied upon the freepages service as a safeguard to protect decades of work and to make it available free of charge to anyone else who tied in with these families. It had been a great comfort to me that the site would allow me to reconstruct my genealogy, if my hard copies {gathered in the course of research dating from 1973} were ever lost. I am still finding collateral descendants and would gladly add them to the site, if it were still available. I would be delighted to receive any information that would allow me to download the information I had posted and to find out if and when the site might be restored. The homepage is accessed through this URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~creole1718/index.html Thank you, Janice Gonzales Barry

I have been working on all sorts of setting combinations with Ipswitch's WS_FTP and discovered that sftp://sitesuser.rootsweb.com was the main problem. Previously we didn't have ftp in front of the host name. After making it sitesuser.rootsweb.com and changing the port to 22 I no longer got an immediate error message, but it did time out trying. I finally caved and downloaded Filezilla. Caution when you do - even though I thought I uncheck boxes for extra stuff it still install Chrome and hijacked my browser home page. The program worked fine, but it's nuts to have two ftp programs when one should do the trick for all sites. Good luck, Susan https://sites.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/
