Gawd, what a long post. Yes, all that was announced, on both Lists. :-D
Caroline and others, I'm not Ann but I have one as a middle name... Think of it all like this... If you used xyvbn program to create your pages, but for some reason you need to put your program back together with your website, it can take a bit of doing. Like.... on your PC, you may have to re-open that site a few times before the program stops crashing. You may have to re-calibrate links--- meaning, all the links have to reintroduce themselves, as if at a big "Website" party. If you used _includes, they may stumble and fumble before working right again. Rootsweb server is "like" a great big program-- a database program where it stores and organizes websites. It keeps your site out of my site, and repairs fencelines between subdivisions of websites. It keeps all my "~florian" directories separate but together as one "web". It has to keep your and my pages out of gardens and driveways-- that's where password security really helps, so Gregory's tulips stay out of Steven's tomatoes.... and we can all park and work on our "Home" pages. My guess is they're also scanning for termites--- in computerese, for malware and computer worms. But I think most of the scanning is just to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again and make sure those new security padlocks all work. Signed-- Me, The Middle Name Ann person, who only wishes to be working at Ancestry ;-)
Hi, Anne, Using your instructions below I substituted ~saintdomingue for ~xyz123, but all I got for my website was this big message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~saintdomingue on this server. You had mentioned in one of your past messages that you would arrange to have my website up and running in a week, but it doesn't seem to have happened. Should I go to the /restoreWebsite link and apply? Or are you still working on it? I don't want to do the wrong thing and interfere with your efforts. Thanks for your help in these trying times! When replying to a message, please trim the quoted portion to that part of the message to which you are replying. Also, please remove the list footer(s) from the part your quoted message. These are added to every new message posted, so quoting them over and over again is unnecessary and just takes up space in the archives. Thanks, Pat Asher List Admin

Interesting. I downloaded the latest version and replace is not now grayed out so will play around some more. OK I see what I was doing wrong, I THINK. If you hosted site has not been restored yet, you can fill out a form and request it. This includes homepages, freepages, and gen web sites of all types. How do you know if your site has been restored? If your site is ~xyz123 go to http://sites.rootsweb.com/~xyz123 If your site is there, you can go to https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword and request your password be reset. You will also be agreeing to Terms of Service. If your site doesn't appear under that URL: If you don't see your site -- it hasn't been restored. If you want it back, go to: https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/restoreWebsite and fill it out. Make your best guesses. Will restoration be immediate? NO! It will take 2 to 4 weeks. Will you get an email saying we are working on it? No. We will email you if we can't find it. We will email you when it is back. Or check the url (see above) Where can you get updates on this subject and all things RootsWeb? http://rootsweb.blog Anne Mitchell

Use the Browse button to navigate your computer's directory structure. Check the Subdirectories box if you want to search subdirectories of the directory you have selected in the File Masks box. Click the Start button to start the search. The program will open all files containing the text you have indicated. To replace the selected text, go to Search > Replace Enter the text you want to replace in the Find What box, and the replacement text in the Replace with box. You can do it one file at a time so you can check for that space after the comma, or you can click in the All Documents box to have the program automatically replace it in every file. Since browsers will only render one whitespace no matter how many times you hit the space bar while editing your HTML, you could just enter a space at the beginning of your replace with text, and if the file ends up with a double space, it will still only be rendered as one space. Caroline, in response to your questions about security, it isn't the HTML pages that are the issue or the CSS on them. All of the backend servers, the database access code are being redone. Anne, thank you for coming online, and for all your efforts. Please, could you tell us clearly and precisely what this "security" problem really is? The early information just didn't make sense. I've asked several IT experts, investigators, and they cannot understand how there can be such a problem with html / css pages. Is it perhaps that server space was used for purposes other than fh, genealogy? Surely it could also be useful for you that we should all understand, and maybe help in the future to avoid problems? Then, of course, there are little IT wizards of age five to fifteen or so, who find the login password, and know how to have some fun with server space, all unbeknownst to their happy parent. You mentioned that pages might need to be recoded: to what level of html/css? Will html4 still be read? The idea of putting research on a back-burner while I recode - at my time of life (73) - makes me shudder and want to howl with anguish .... Legacy websites: I was also told of this option if no-one took over from a deceased person; surely Ancestry has a copy of the original contract? Because you know if I do that, something will go horribly wrong :-) But our intent is never again to go down for that long. And now I've borrowed trouble. RootsWeb had been allowed to run for a very long time without any kind of real supervision and thought on how to maintain it and make it secure. That is all my group thinks about these days. Yes, I'm a-hurrying! Just so many pics and table data on this site. I offered to be the last website to be re-instated to give me more time. LOL I need the rest of the year, I fear.
MSO is usually a left-over Word code. So I would delete them. Ithought Barry gave you some css for styling tables? == He did. But this is all the MS coding crap left over from all the prior webmasters. None of the tables match for this MSO stuff. Makes little sense to me.... I can't convert until I can get the tables cleaned up. HOWEVER, it is horrendously daunting. Makes me want to remove the css for tables from the CSS file, and leave the crap tables sit for another year. Sigh.
