    3. Many times when a correction or change is uploaded to a site and you access it right away you may see no change on the website. This is because the browser is using a cached copy of the site rather than the new content. Right away it is showing the page is updated/uploaded --but in fact it is taking anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours for it to actually show up when you go to your site. This was discouraging for me, a newcomer, who was just learning how to use it --until I went back and checked an hour later and the file showed the corrections that I had made when at 45 minutes; it still hadn't showed - even though it showed right away that the file was uploaded. 3. Depends what kind of site you are doing. If your site is based on your family tree, John Cardinal's GedSite will make a nice site (that you design using the program's tools) from your gedcom file. (Disclaimer: I use his original SecondSite program but have no financial interest in his programs.) GedSite isn't free, but it's not expensive either. If your site is something more like a county site or other type of genealogy site, then other people will have good suggestions for that. Where's the Jack Daniels.... > > ------------------------------ > > I'm not Barry :-), but here's an example of what I use when I don't want a table to take up the full screen width. I like the % idea because it does not assume a specific screen width in pixels. <table style="margin:auto; width:70%;"> A purist would of course create a class in a css file for that instead of putting the style into the html. And that's certainly OK, but often I like it better this way so that I don't have to go look in the css file to see what the class does when I've perhaps named it poorly or just forgotten exactly what it contains. Unlike some folks, I don't see css as the perfect solution to everything! You can use the same idea to vary the width of columns in a table by coding: <td class="xlarge center" style="width:33%"> for example. And you only need to include that in the td's of the first tr in the table. BTW, the xlarge and center classes do just what you would imagine. Hope that helps. -- Charlie Carothers http://www.freebiblecommentary.org <http://freebiblecommentary.org>

    3. Tracy, You are correct regarding sites.rootsweb.com accepting both http and https connections, but it would be better if rootsweb added the following to their server .htaccess file:_ <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] </IfModule> ... which will turn every http connection to a secure https one. Hopefully that is done, and the points you have raised will be covered. Barry On 21/07/2018 14:21, Tracy garrison wrote: > If you have your site restored think about a secure site. 3. Help (when you can). I don't want 35 different table mark-ups (besides "table1" for the main display of backgrounds, etc.) In Frontpage, I have simple tables. Often, skinny tables, 3 columns. But when attached to the css, a skinny table goes full width. I don't know which "table#" to pick from the css.... or how to write yet another "table#" to cover each of these. Isn't there a standard for skinny tables? wide tables with narrow rows height and width like where a cell might only hold "1234"? skinny tables with 5 skinny columns, but one column that has long text? and so on and so on..... Under the table, defeated! Where's the Jack Daniels....

    3. If you have your site restored think about a secure site. Https I noticed that everyone is using http://sites.rootsweb.com/~_____ But browsers are flagging sites that start with http: instead of https. Your rootsweb site will work as https://sites.rootsweb.com/~____ as well. But, and this is a big BUT, you will need to make sure every link is also https. If a link Is http your site will be flagged as mixed (on chrome you will see a little circle with an I before the URL as a warning) and will be shown to the world as an insecure site. Google chrome already is branding all sites with http: or mixed as being insecure. I went through mine in a couple hours and changed everything to be https: I know it is a pain but soon people will not want to use a site that is not secure because hackers can hijack pictures on http and link them to their own sites. Absolute links take "the long way home". Relative links are kind of like real relatives in your house-- they go from one room to another without fanfare, and jump on your furniture with their shoes on. LOL judy

    3. Yes, all of this is confusing--- deep breath! Be patient! If you did not request your site, it is not back online. Google picked up the index pages from RW's new list.... all it is is one page. Again, you have to use the form to request the whole site. Don't worry-- there's lots of time to do this. Lots of people are in line. Do you have the link to the new blog? Gives all the info http://rootsweb.blog/2018/07/19/getting-into-the-new-version-of-your-hosted-web-site/

    3. My pages are pretty simple, so I opted to just learn minimal basic html and use a plain simple text editor to create and edit my pages. I started out doing this on a PDA, and the only thing resembling WYSIWYG was very difficult for me to use, I found I preferred just learning how to use basic <p> and <blockquote> and header tags. I then installed htmltidy on my local system, the html syntax checker, and if I messed anything up, it would tell me as well as create what it considered a corrected version of the page. As years went on, I learned to do things a little fancier, using tables, but I honestly cannot imagine writing webpages with an editor that took over and made decisions for me. And our wonderful list member Barry helped write a container for me, to help with various page boundary issues. But I have an easier time knowing where my files are as I do almost everything on the command line. I know that people using graphical interfaces (which is the norm) often have a hard time finding files. So for me, I just change to the directory where I keep my rootsweb files, and start my ftp client there. A command line one, no dragging and dropping, I just type what I want to do, like "put" or "get" and the file name.

    3. Patricia, Want to thank you for being so patient and understanding to this 'older lady' who is having to learn two completely new programs with a lot of links to change on a very extensive website. Did make some progress on the index page - at least figured out how to use NotePadTab and how to upload with filezilla. With the index page, I'm going through it very slowly and got about a third of the way . Now do have a few of the pics back and at least some of the links working - though the links on the pages they point to still have to be changed. But at least I now have a bit of confidence and reassurance that I do know a bit of what I'm doing. In the next few days will continue with this page until I have all the pics up and links that actually work or have them removed. AT least I now have an idea what they actually should look like and to me - that is true progress Thank you again. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~ajobebrown/ Ann (Jobe) Brown
