    2. Billie Walsh
    3. There was some mention of Client Side Includes [ CSI ] instead of SSI. I did a little investigating and to my mind that might be an even better idea. I don't use SSI's to any large extent but do find them handy. One downside is that you have to load the page to the server to see if they work properly. I have some that work properly on a page one time and the next it doesn't. Even though I haven't made any changes. Sometimes they don't give the answer I want even though I set the parameters properly [ Copyright date for instance ]. I recently fund a small JavaScript that is, before I ever heard of the term, a CSI. It works on my browser locally. I don't have to load it to a server to see it. W3C offers a tutorial on writing javascipts if someone is interested in investing a little time and effort into learning how to use CSI's. https://www.w3schools.com/jS/default.asp There are a number of editors available for Windows users that might make learning/writing JavaScript easier. https://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&hs=14N&channel=fs&ei=aI9YW5HzCoGzzwL4upHgCQ&q=javascript+editors+for+windows&oq=javascript+editors+for+windows&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i22i30k1.4674439.4686468.0.4686774.32.31.1.0.0.0.169.4248.0j30.30.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..1.31.4249...0i67k1j0i131k1j35i39k1j0i20i264k1j0i131i20i264k1j0i20i263k1.0.NoxLx6U6dRU https://is.gd/nYLYu9 On 07/25/2018 08:14 AM, Rose Lee Head wrote: > I sent Anne Mitchell an email with the question about SSI not implemented > yet. You have only one Freepages site. The /parry site is in your family_html directory and a link to it will not work until RootsWeb restores the old URL structure so you can visit your family_html, military_html, misc_html etc. directories instead of the genealogy_html directory which is the one "recognized" by the URL sites.rootsweb.com >Secondly in my restored Sherring web site I have a 'Links' page - >only one of the links to external sites is working and the page is >trying to find the other external sites through Rootsweb - what is going on? The href links that are not working do not include http:// so the browser is treating them as relative links within your own site. Change <.a href="<view-source:http://sites.rootsweb.com/~sherring/view-source:http://sites.rootsweb.com/~sherring/www.sag.org.au>www.sag.org.au"> to <.a href="http://www.sag.org.au"> and they will work. I submitted a request for my ~sherring site to be restored, thinking that the attached sites ~sherring/parry and ~sherring/gosford would also be restored, but that does not seem to be the case. Do I have to submit a request for the restoration of each sub site separately? Secondly in my restored Sherring web site I have a 'Links' page - only one of the links to external sites is working and the page is trying to find the other external sites through Rootsweb - what is going on? Like Charlie, I was wondering if I could establish two other sites by making a new application for a site, as I am also unsure of what name and what email address I used to establish these other two sites (they are additional to the above mentioned sites. 3. The form is currently showing as an error when you click onto it. It's probably just a temporary glitch, and I suggest that anyone trying use it, should try again later today. I checked for my Freepages site, and I see it is up as of today, since I've checked everyday, however, I have not received any email from RW advising me that it is up. And yes, I do check my spam folders everyday, so I definitely haven't received it. I will continue to wait until the end of the day, and if I don't see one, I will contact Anne about it. When I clicked Submit, I briefly saw a screen that said "This site can't be reached" with an "ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR" note at the bottom. Then it switched to another page that says "There was an internal error". The link I used was: https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/restoreWebsite I tried it again just now, and it just stayed on that first error page.

I've no idea if I signed up as Charles or Charlie. I subscribed to the blog, and I have an email from RootsWebBlog that says, " First, you will need to reset your password." So do I need to reset my password and only *then* ask that my site be restored? I also have an even sneakier question. :-) If I don't request that my website be restored, can I sign up for a new freepages account and pick a different site name? In my vast ignorance in 2004 or so when I first signed up, I picked a very ill advised name for my site. At that time, I had a very narrow vision of what I might be able to do with the site, and picked a very specific and very long site name. I've wished many times that I could change that, but I don't think that was ever allowed. Perhaps this is actually a golden opportunity to start afresh! (And yes, I do have local copies of my freepages site's entire content so nothing would be lost by abandoning the old site.) All advice gratefully accepted. 3. Pat, I tried the URL twice to request my site be restored and it gives me a message that the site the submission goes to cannot be reached, suggesting page(s) may have been moved... Do you or anyone know if this is a temporary issue - should I just keep trying to submit my info to be added to the list? Thank you! 3. Dear Bill, As others have said, our sites cannot be brought back on reliably until we request that they be brought back up. And, at least to start with, the URLs for them will be different than the old URLs that we have bookmarked. I believe that the rootsweb team is sometimes accidentally bringing some of our old pages back online temporarily at the old URLs as they do testing, and that you may have reached your pages during one of those brief periods. The same thing happened to me last week, I was able to visit some of my pages at the old freepages URLs, but by the next day, they were gone and I was taken to ancestry.com when I clicked on the same links. So follow the instructions given in other replies if you want your site to be brought back online. Your first step will be to make an official request that your site be brought back online. Then it may take a few weeks for your site to be brought online. You should receive email notification when that happens, but you will also be able to see when it gets back online by going to the new URL for your site, before that email arrives. I believe your new URLs (if the old URLS you provided are correct) will be https://www.rootsweb.com/~coxheadfamilydata/ and also https://sites.rootsweb.com/~coxheadfamilydata/. Anne Mitchell, who is in charge of the RootsWeb Team, has written in the rootsweb blog at http://blog.rootsweb.com that they plan on restoring the old URLs. But right now, you have to use the new URLs. Once your site is back online at one of the new URLs, then you must request a password reset using the links you can find in other threads here and in the blog. And then you can upload revised copies of your pages via SFTP. If you have problems with any of the steps to get access to your site back, ask for more help here so people can try to make things more clear for you. I believe your site was back online at the old URLS for most of 2017, but maybe you did not try to visit then. At some time around summer of 2016, as I recall, our sites were offline for a little while, and that may be when you tried before, but they were all back up in 2017 at our old URLs until Ancestry took them all offline in December 2017 for a security upgrade. There had been a security breach at another part of rootsweb, and they decided to upgrade all of rootsweb at that time, to make sure we and our visitors would be able to use the site safely.
