    3. Since Billie and Patricia chimed in about directory naming, I thought I'd try to clarify what I said a bit. And I do agree that each person should do what works best for them. Personally, I don't use MyDocuments for anything. For ease of backing up all my data to a flash drive and so File Explorer puts it at the top of the list under D:, I keep *all* my data in a folder named 0ACCStuff. That first character is a zero, not an oh. If I look at the non-expanded directory structure on the host side in Filezilla for the site I'm paid to maintain, all I see is a rectangular blob. Obviously, you can't duplicate that on your local drive. So your highest level local side could be something like D:\XYZ or whatever you choose. This will not match the host side. When I expand the host side blob, the site has everything in a directory named public_html. Therefore, if my local highest level directory of choice for the web site is D:\XYZ I will have everything in D:\XYZ\public_html. I actually have another directory level above public_html, so the complete path to my hypothetical XYZ web site is D:\0ACCStuff\CCDoc\XYZ\public_html. The real point is to keep the directory structures identical once you get to that public_html level and at all lower levels under it. To continue the example one more level, if the host side has images stored in public_html\images then my copy of those images would be in D: \0ACCStuff\CCDoc \XYZ\public_html\images. Hopefully that will clarify what I mean about identical local and remote directory structures. Strictly speaking they are not *perfectly* identical because the names differ at the highest level, but below that they are identical. Saves a whole bunch of frustration and uploading files to the wrong directory. Even then, you will occasionally upload to the wrong directory due to not watching closely enough that the two panes are at the same place. (Please don't ask me how I know that! :-)) When that happens, you can just right click on the host side and delete the file that is in the wrong directory, navigate on the host side to the proper directory, and upload again. Blessings to all! -- Charlie Carothers http://www.freebiblecommentary.org <http://freebiblecommentary.org>

    3. Many thanks to Charlie for trying to guide me back to sanity on my website. I think Charlie and I are in different universes because nothing he says matches what I see on my screen. On the View tab, I don't see a checkmark by a Local directory tree or Remote directory tree, and I don't see either tree. On the right side of my Filezilla program, the Remote site, I see a list of 26 programs and 1 directory. These programs are the basic content of my web page, with different programs for jack, june, art, neil, ralph, ruff, etc. This is what I want readers to find when they open my site. I don't know how these programs got to this place, but I suspect I had something to do with it. On the left side, the Local site, I see 21 files and 3 directories, none of which matches the content of my Remote site. Similarly, I don't know how they got there. These files include docs, locales, resources, authors, a bunch of .dll files and Filezilla exe. -- no programs or content. Plus there are a couple of other .exe files. This makes no sense to me. You can correct me, but I don't think I want to upload any of this to my Remote site. I'm thinking that I might need to delete some of these files, but I don't want to destroy the content of my site. Maybe I should uninstall Filezilla and start over with a reinstall? I think you are right about Kompozer. It is a text editor, apparently like your Crimson, and I have found it very useful. Thanks again. I have just edited those documents with Kompozer, but they don't appear. I don't even see Kompozer in that list. My guess is that they are hidden behind some other content and perhaps I need to double-click on something to open them. I would appreciate any help to calm my floundering around. > Many thanks. Neil > > Hi Neil, If you are seeing "Program Files" in the left pane, I think you are at the wrong directory on your local drive. You need to navigate to wherever on your local hard drive your site files are stored. On my hard drive, they are in a highest level directory that I named something like "CarothersFamilyMemories". Subdirectories such as Images, etc. are inside that directory. My index.html and other html and css files are at the highest level. Under the Filezilla "View" tab, do you have a check mark by "Local directory tree" and "Remote directory tree". If not, I would strongly suggest that you enable both of these items. With these enabled, you should see a "File-Explorer-like" structure above your file names on both sides. Using this, you can navigate to any directory on your local drive and on the host. If you pick the directory where you have saved, just as an example, your index.html file, then you should be able to right click on it and upload it to the host. Before you do that, you need to be sure that you have navigated to the corresponding place on the host side as well. I might just reiterate what has been stated here many times too. It will save you a lot of hair pulling (which I can ill afford :-)) if your directory structures for both the local and remote sides are identical. If they are not, you should probably pause right now and make that so using File Explorer on the local side to create/move directories and/or files until the two sides are identical. Given that your site existed before, I think it is much easier to make your local copy match the remote copy than to do it the other way around. I think you mentioned Kompozer. I know nothing about that, but I assume from the name it is some sort of an editor. It happens that I use an editor called Crimson. My normal work flow is: edit using Crimson, save the file, upload with Filezilla, and finally check the results using a browser (Chrome in my case). I suspect your work flow should be pretty similar. Syble, your connection to sites.rootsweb.com/~syble/ doesn't have to be secure because you are not exchanging any sensitive or private information such as passwords. You are simply viewing the files you have uploaded to your account, just like any other visitor to your site. So it makes no difference if you view them via http:// (unsecured) or https:// (unsecured). sftp:// on the other hand, stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol and is a secure connection to the server so your login information and the files you are transferring are encrypted. When you connect to a server, your connection is routed through multiple hubs (computers) on the way. Encryption (sftp://) prevents unencrypted user names, passwords, and files from lying around on those interim computers between you and the servers at rootsweb.com So, if you have a password that works for uploading your files, there is no need to change it over security concerns. On MY second hard drive I have "freepages" as a directory then the Freepages directory structure below that. That works best for me. Everyone should develop a system that works for them and is easiest for them.

Neil, if you have filled out the settings as I suggested at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html One the left hand pane you should see the files/folders that make up your site on your computer. On the right hand pane you should see the files on the RW servers. The file/folder names should match. I work with Expression Web open where I edit and Filezilla open so I can transfer files. If you open Site Manage and look at the advanced tab, you should be able to browse to the location on YOUR computer where your local site is. -----Original Message----- From: Neil Boyer [mailto:naboyer@comcast.net] Sent: Monday, August 6, 2018 3:55 PM To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 161 Filezilla Issues I'm revealing that I know a lot less about this than I thought. Why on earth would you want to do that? Ever wish some software did not have certain options? IMNSHO that is one option we could all have lived without forever. <rant>Too bad there is no option (that I have found) to have Filezilla display easily readable text under win10. Light gray text on a white background does not make for a happy time with these 79 year old eyes. I doubt I would have liked it much better at 29. To upload, you need to right click on the left hand pane which represents your local copy of your site's files. Just to confuse the issue, I think that (but personally avoid) double-clicking on a file on either side will initiate the appropriate upload or download action. I avoid doing that because I feel like I am more in control of what is happening using the right click technique. Any time you upload or download, you really want to be thinking carefully about what you are about to do. In either case, assuming that some form of the target file already exists, you are going to overwrite it with the contents of the source file. What am I doing wrong? > > I would copy the screen but screenshot doesn't work for me. > > > Hi Neil, With Filezilla, right clicking on the right hand pane is used for downloading from your site's host side (or deleting files, etc. on the host side). Source and target change roles depending on whether you right click on the left or right hand pane. Both can be useful, but I find that I right click on and upload from the left hand pane very much more than I ever download. Do you have another email address you might have used when you registered your site? If you used another email address, and you can no longer receive mail at that address, you will need to write to annerootsweb@gmail.com to get your account registration updated. However, Anne has very limited availability this week, so it may be a while before you hear back from her. Pat A.

    3. Neil, you are only going to see upload if your right click on the files on YOUR computer. If you right click on the files on the remote site, you will see Download. 3. If you have reset the password for your website, but are getting an authentication error when you try to login, the programmers found a problem with using the special character & (ampersand) in our passwords. That character has been removed as an allowed character. The allowed special characters are now: _ ! @ # ( ) Asterisk (*) and ampersand (&) are not accepted characters. Go to <https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword> to create a new password and be sure it does not include an ampersand (or an asterisk). The Site Restore Guide at <sites.rootsweb.com/~pasher/> will be updated to reflect this change. Pat A.
