I think I'm making good progress with the good help of many people. I am now at the stage where I on the right side of the Filezilla screen. This shows: /boyerlinks/genealogy_html/boyer_easton Inside are 20 files and one directory. On the top of the Filezilla log on the left side, part way down it first said Connected to sitesuser.rootsweb.com I tried double clicking on site line near the bottom and it said Starting download of (boyerlinks, etc.) Then it said Skipping download of the same Then File transfer skipped Then Disconnected from server Then network error: software caused connection abort So, wait: Did I want a download? I now have all my files listed in both places: Local Site on the left, Remote site on the right, but now nothing is happening. Advice needed: Did I skip some vital step? Should I double-click the files on the right to download them? Or should I now Upload the files on the left side? I'm confused about there I am. You must judiciously substitute your names for hers in order to be able to see *your* directories and files. Just one example of what I'm talking about is in her first thumbnail image. Where it says "gearyfamily" you must substitute your own "User:" text. The "Host" field however applies to anyone's site. And so on for each case - two places on the next thumbnail (Default local directory and Default remote directory), etc. And I agree that a new computer would not help you. In fact, it would likely complicate things for you because you would then need to first get all your current local website files moved to the new computer in addition to coping with Filezilla. And BTW, Pat Geary's very last thumbnail illustrates the "File Explorer-like" panes above both the local and remote lists of directories and files that I droned on about earlier. Have you been able to enable those in the View tab yet? No, on my computer, I just see Pat's red-border heading : "publishing your Rootsweb Site with Filezilla." The top right box that I see says "Geary Family Directories," and the right-arrow takes me not to computer directories but simply to a Google list of websites, including phone "directories", of all things, and the Geary family pool schedule. Should I get a new computer? No, as Barry said, you don't need a new computer. To clear up any confusion, there are two Pat's who respond frequently on this list. One is me -- I am Pat Asher, and I respond to questions when I think I can help. Second is Pat Geary, who is one of our list experts on Filezilla. She has an instruction page on connecting to your restored RootsWeb site at <http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html> On your computer, set up Filezilla to connect to your account at usersites.rootsweb.com following her instructions. Note the host/server name for your FTP connection using Filezilla, is not the same as the server name you connect to when viewing your site using your browser (that is an http:// connection). The http:// URL for your site starts with sites.rootsweb.com/ Test your setup to see if Filezilla connects you. Ignore your local file pane for the moment and verify that you have connected to the server using Filezilla. If you are connected HOORAY, you are half way there. If the connection is not successful, go back to Pat Geary's instructions, review and double check your settings and try again. In the right hand pane, you should see the files you have uploaded to boyerlinks/genealogy_html/ These will include the directories containing your various family files, e.g. /Waltman /boyer_orwigsburg etc. Once you have verified you are able to connect to the server with Filezilla and see the files you have already uploaded, you can change your local directory so the files you want to upload appear in the left hand pane. But you should do that while you are NOT connected. Close your connection in Filezilla then follow the instructions I sent previously to identify your local directory so it shows up in the left hand pane. I will repeat them here: 1) Open Filezilla, but do not connect to your site yet. 2) Click the Site Manager icon in the upper left hand corner on the toolbar. 3) If you have more than one, highlight the name of your Freepages site in the left hand pane. 4) Click the Advanced tab. 5) Under Default local directory, click the Browse button. 6) The Browse button opens Windows Explorer. Navigate to the directory where you have saved your web site files on your computer. Click the Select Folder button. 7) The location of your files on your computer should now appear in the Default Local Directory box. 8) Click OK. I'm going to add one more suggestion. Since you have directories for various family lines, create one directory to hold all the directories for all of the family lines you have researched. You can call it anything you wish, e.g. MyWebs, Websites, Families, whatever. Just put them all in one place so when you browse your directories to find the one you want to open in Filezilla, it will contain all of your family subdirectories: C:\Users\Jake\Documents\Websites will contain the Waltman subdirectory, the Boyer subdirectory, the Jackson subdirectory, etc. Then, when you connect, you double click (for example) the Waltman subdirectory in the right hand pane to open it (so you will be uploading to that directory); then open the Waltman subdirectory in the left hand pane to find the file you want to upload/update. I picked up from Marsha Bryant, the USGW webmaster, this trick for labeling multiple SIZES of floats/columns. She creates classes for 2 column floats, 3 column floats, and even 4 column floats if you need them. For example, for a 2 column float the CSS would be .column2a {width: 50%; float: left;} .column2b {width: 50%; float: left;} 3 columns would be .column3a (width: 33.33%; float: left;} .column3b (width: 33.33%; float: left;} .column3c (width: 33.33%; float: left;} Of course, you can add whatever other styling you wish to the column classes, but when you are editing code, and you encounter class="column3b" you know that column is part of a 3 column layout. To float two text boxes, sections, divisions, etc. side by side, you could do <!-- <div class="column2a"> Your left hand column text goes here. </div> <div class="column2b"> Your right hand column text goes here. </div> --> Pat A.

No, I don't want that. I would like to see "boyerlinks" in that box, which you said I should find, but it's just not there. I think my computer has some crossed wires. Should I get a new computer? Hi Neil, Hopefully it is obvious from what the others said, but just in case it's not, the instructions for publishing using Filezilla that Pat Geary has kindly provided use her own site's names for things *only* as examples. Best regards, -- Charlie Carothers http://www.freebiblecommentary.org <http://freebiblecommentary.org>

You need to navigate to wherever on your local hard drive your site files are stored. On my hard drive, they are in a highest level directory that I named something like "CarothersFamilyMemories". Subdirectories such as Images, etc. are inside that directory. My index.html and other html and css files are at the highest level. Under the Filezilla "View" tab, do you have a check mark by "Local directory tree" and "Remote directory tree". If not, I would strongly suggest that you enable both of these items. With these enabled, you should see a "File-Explorer-like" structure above your file names on both sides. Using this, you can navigate to any directory on your local drive and on the host. If you pick the directory where you have saved, just as an example, your index.html file, then you should be able to right click on it and upload it to the host. Before you do that, you need to be sure that you have navigated to the corresponding place on the host side as well. I might just reiterate what has been stated here many times too. It will save you a lot of hair pulling (which I can ill afford :-)) if your directory structures for both the local and remote sides are identical. If they are not, you should probably pause right now and make that so using File Explorer on the local side to create/move directories and/or files until the two sides are identical. Given that your site existed before, I think it is much easier to make your local copy match the remote copy than to do it the other way around. I think you mentioned Kompozer. I know nothing about that, but I assume from the name it is some sort of an editor. It happens that I use an editor called Crimson. My normal work flow is: edit using Crimson, save the file, upload with Filezilla, and finally check the results using a browser (Chrome in my case). I suspect your work flow should be pretty similar. Hope this helps, -- Charlie Carothers <http://www.freebiblecommentary.org> http://www.freebiblecommentary.org < <http://freebiblecommentary.org> http://freebiblecommentary.org> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2018 10:20:57 -0500 From: Charles Carothers <csquared71@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] Re: Filezilla Issues To: Freepages Help <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <CAGmaTgxLWjdOQoeq=0xBwOW83DFifqJ1u7Q2cvCeDgWzL7FTYg@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Since Billie and Patricia chimed in about directory naming, I thought I'd try to clarify what I said a bit. And I do agree that each person should do what works best for them. Personally, I don't use MyDocuments for anything. For ease of backing up all my data to a flash drive and so File Explorer puts it at the top of the list under D:, I keep *all* my data in a folder named 0ACCStuff. That first character is a zero, not an oh. If I look at the non-expanded directory structure on the host side in Filezilla for the site I'm paid to maintain, all I see is a rectangular blob. Obviously, you can't duplicate that on your local drive. So your highest level local side could be something like D:\XYZ or whatever you choose. This will not match the host side. When I expand the host side blob, the site has everything in a directory named public_html. Therefore, if my local highest level directory of choice for the web site is D:\XYZ I will have everything in D:\XYZ\public_html. I actually have another directory level above public_html, so the complete path to my hypothetical XYZ web site is D:\0ACCStuff\CCDoc\XYZ\public_html. The real point is to keep the directory structures identical once you get to that public_html level and at all lower levels under it. To continue the example one more level, if the host side has images stored in public_html\images then my copy of those images would be in D: \0ACCStuff\CCDoc \XYZ\public_html\images. Hopefully that will clarify what I mean about identical local and remote directory structures. Strictly speaking they are not *perfectly* identical because the names differ at the highest level, but below that they are identical. Saves a whole bunch of frustration and uploading files to the wrong directory. Even then, you will occasionally upload to the wrong directory due to not watching closely enough that the two panes are at the same place. (Please don't ask me how I know that! :-)) When that happens, you can just right click on the host side and delete the file that is in the wrong directory, navigate on the host side to the proper directory, and upload again. Navigate to the directory where you have saved your web site files on your computer. Hi Neil, Sorry you don't see what I'm talking about in Filezilla! I absolutely agree with Pat Asher also. The files you are seeing in the left pane appear to have absolutely nothing to do with your web site. Do *NOT* delete them, and do *NOT* upload them. I also think Pat gave you some really good advice on setting the starting location for the left hand pane. I would suggest you try to follow that sequence of steps exactly. That should get you to the top level of where your site is stored locally. (Because of the way the hand off of the site that I'm paid to maintain happened, I've never used Site Manager, so apologies for not thinking of that! I was given an xml file by the previous webmaster and I used that to set everything up. But that's a whole other can of worms. :-)) Based on a tip someone gave me (thanks Susan!) when you open one of your site files in Kompozer it will show you the complete path to that file at the top. In case you don't know where your files are locally, that is a good way to find out. If you will make note of that path then you can use it when you browse following Pat's advice. I think you are still going to need to be able to navigate among your subdirectories even after you get your top level files showing in the left pane using Pat's advice. The same thing applies to the remote pane. I realize there may not be a checkmark by "Local directory tree" and "Remote directory tree" - at least not yet. My point was intended to be that you *want and need* a checkmark by each of those. If you can see the Local and Remote directory tree items in the menu when you click on View, then if you will click on those items a checkmark will suddenly appear to the left of each of them. After that, you should be able to see the directory structure in a section that will then appear above your list of files. I don't know if this helps or not, but when I click on View a list of 11 items appears. The bottom 7 of those have checkmarks to the left of them. With different versions of Filezilla that list might be different. If you don't see the Local and Remote directory tree items at all, then I'm at a loss as to how to fix that. If that is the case, then perhaps a remove and reinstall of Filezilla is in order? Hopefully Pat or someone else can help you with that. It would seem your site is not up yet. As long as you've done the restore request It's a waiting game, I'm afraid. Your new URL when it comes will be like this http://sites.rootsweb.com/~mikelaw/ So it's just a matter of checking for that. This blog has a lot of details if you've not seen it before. http://rootsweb.blog [http://rootsweb.blog/] Bryan On 08-Aug-18 8:33:38 AM, mikelaw@iname.com <mikelaw@iname.com> wrote: It seems my site has been down for a while now, but how do I get the site restored? It seems my site has been down for a while now, but how do I get the site restored? My site used to be at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mikelaw/ I've gone to the page below a few weeks ago to request it be restored, but get no feedback or email confirmation of my request. https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/restoreWebsite I put in a request to download the files from my site, but my question is, where do I log in to upload my site again? Is there a page containing all the information I need to manually restore my site? Thanks.

Maybe I should uninstall Filezilla >and start over with a reinstall? No. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES. They are not necessarily to do with Filezilla and you don't want to delete any of your operating system files. Instead, do this: 1) Open Filezilla, but do not connect to your site yet. Now when you connect to that site, Filezilla will show your files in the left-hand connection pane, and you can select the files you want to upload by right clicking and selecting upload from the dialogue box.
