Forgot to say also to Neil that index.html *must *be in the genealogy_html directory on the host side at least. (In order to preserve sanity, it needs to be there on the local side as well. :-)) If it's not there on the host side, it won't be found. This could very well be why the browser brings up the older copy of the file. Most search engines default to AND. So that if the search entry is John Q. Jones, your search engine will look for John + Q+ Jones and deliver somewhat relevant results, including those that include only John + Jones, or only +Jones. I don't know of any search engine that will assume "Mr." or "Uncle" or "father" is part of the search parameter, and if your visitors are using those search terms, it is up to you to educate your visitors as to how searches can and do work. You can explain that they can search for "John Q. Jones" enclosed in quotes, and their searches will return only that precise sequence of letters and spaces. OTOH, the entry John Q. Jones will default to AND and return results for "John," "Q," and "Jones" without any attempt to tie them together. Freefind has a page explaining how their (and many) search engines work at <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.freefind.com_searchtipspop.html&d=DwIBAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=uvYOcPGQ7L-CJxeRChCuibc3QmO0aDfX4sBcUvjx3Z0&s=tMNHSi2UEy6mLQAvAXsqjO7IfRmLPD_YnhEPwjkR3iM&e=> You might want to educate your site visitors by referring them there. You are editing and uploading index.html, right? If not, I strongly suggest you concentrate on only that file for now. That is the one that contains your "Revised September 6, 2010" text. By doing a Ctrl-u on your home page, I can see that date on line 24 of that file. How about for an experiment you edit that to August 24, 2018 and I will look again and see if I see the change? Maybe that will tell us something. You may already know this; if so my apologies. Not only is there a default and required directory, there is a default and required file as the "root" of your web site. That file is index.html. While not required, you can add that to the path in your browser just after boyerlinks/. I just did that and it works, showing me the same page. My site has a lot of old letters. But when people try to search the site for references to them they usually are unsuccessful. For example, they want to find pages on my site that refer to John Q. Jones. But a document may refer to him as "John Jones", "J.Q. Jones", "Mr. Jones", "Uncle John". "father", etc. so the searcher comes up empty handed. In most cases, I have a link to that person's entry in my WorldConnect tree, but the contents of anchor tags aren't searched. Obviously I can add a note to each document saying "[This document mentions: John Q. Jones, Sally (Brown) Smith, ..." But that's rather obtrusive. Neither HTML comments or CSS comments are searched, but is there a way to add "index terms" to a page that will be searched, but not display when just viewing the page? I thought of making the text white, so it will be "invisible", but I'm not sure that would work on everyone's device, browser, etc. Surely others have encountered and dealt with this problem. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2018 13:08:35 -0400 From: JFlorian <cageycat@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: Identifying People for Site Searches To: Freepages Web Sites <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <CAE5hz-DC0q6CUjjTW-Jq7_xE2kKprNOjWYsSphXAyx4ncgLAXg@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Bite the bullet and transcribe the letters and annotate the text. ...father [John Q. Jones] -- put it right into the text. ------------------------------ 1. Thanks for the suggestion. The letters are transcribed. That's why the site search (I'm currently using FreeFind) works. But it only works if the words in the query are exact matches. Most of the names have been turned into links, so when reading a page, it's easy to click and find out who is being referred to. It's not a matter of avoiding work, it's a matter of minimizing the obtrusiveness -- both in terms of the flow of reading and preserving the look of the original. But letting the browsers do their thing without trying to impose the kind of control you can get with word processing or desk top publishing. Your suggestion certainly does allow searching -- but still requires the search to guess what to search for. I was hoping to add multiple index term, such as "John Quincy Jones", "John Jones" and sometimes "J. Quincy Jones" -- without cumbering up the page with a lot of distracting text when many people are referred to.. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2018 16:40:46 -0600 From: "Ralph Taylor" <rt-sails@comcast.net> Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: Identifying People for Site Searches To: <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <0C02CE9FE2AE46099E9728AC309D923F@Rt2013PC> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" What you're bumping up against is the "literality" of computers. "John O. Jones" is not identical to "John Jones". This is a problem I face in my Taylor Family Genes site; it has a sub-directory devoted to user-submitted family trees, https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.TaylorFamilyGenes.info_fam-2Dtrees&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=ylzZ5g8rHKaN_O47rHEvpvhn0S6H9M-Hp3zOqGh7kuc&s=LPKirS4c_JxYmLsS_evU8JcG6Zhf0oAQAmJNfuCGkYY&e=. To facilitate search-engine performance, I edit name and date information to put it in standardized form. (Submitters use too many different conventions.) I don't think you should change original documents to make them fit the search engine. But you could add name-varaint labels to the docs to make them findable. Sort of like putting "keywords" in a meta tag. If each document is in a separate file (and then "included"), you could you could use meta tags in the head section to help the search engine. Your labels wold not be visible on the page but they would render the file findable. ------------------------------ Ralph, Thanks for understanding why I don't want to clutter the reader's screen with a lot o index terms, And I do use meta tags (but peraps not enough to help people wo are doing web searches with Google, Yahoo, etc. to find my pages. But that's not what I'm asking about. My question has to do with people who are already on my family history web site, and want to search withing it for names of people. The search tool I've installed is "FreeFind", but I think it's competitors all work pretty much the same. They ignore the contents of HTML tags. So either I do someting visible like add a superscript footnote number in te main text and then put the names in visible text that both humans and the FreeFind software can read. Or, I somehow make it invisible to humans (such as white letters on a white background - which would let the site search software find it. Surely others who use site search services have grappled with this issue.
I see the sidebar is working again, but the big news is that the link http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/genealogy/ works - not just the sites.rootsweb.com version. Meanwhile the 403 forbidden page has been dressed up. Signs of progress. I'm thinking that you are working with two sets of files, Neil. The one set that you are opening and editing in Kompozer and the one set that you are showing as the local site in FIlezilla. Try this - Note the location of YOUR local site from Filezilla In my case it is Local site: F:\www\rw-freepages-mobile\ Start Kompozer > Go to File > Open File > Navigate to the SAME LOCATION specified as your local site in Filezilla. Edit your page and save it in Kompozer. Switch to Filezilla > Refresh the display > right click on the file you just edited and select Upload > View that page in your browser http://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks/ And see if the editing changes show as they should. Bruce, I think they said no.
Hi. My website has been up and running for a couple of weeks or so although not being picked up by search engines yet. However, This last couple of days all the links within my website that take the visitor to the various pages have stopped working for some reason. Any help or advice please? Many thanks in advance. Many thanks to Charlie and Pat Geary for their continuing efforts to help me. A couple of miscellaneous notes: Let me note first that there have been several references to Pat's Geary family publishing guidance on how to use filezilla. Sorry to say this, but https://www.ancestry.com/academy/course/connect-rootsweb-filezilla does not work for me. The pictures are all blurry and the sound unintelligible. Maybe it's my computer but guidance on Filezilla must come from elsewhere. This doesn't help. I've tried it half a dozen times. Second, under guidance from Charlie, I've been poking around my files and I found a document with file size of 1,737,528 -- huge and far larger than almost anything else on my computer. This aroused my suspicion that that large ile was jamming my efforts to use filezilla. Maybe not. What was it? It was my 2007 obituary for my long-gone dog Ruff Boyer. Big obit. Poor guy. He bit me and now maybe he broke my Filezilla. I found the remote directory tree, as Charlie recommended, and clicking on Upload in the left pane on one of my files did produce the message "Target File Already Exists." I chose to override, and the file said "Transfers finished." And then I went to Firefox and put in what I believe to be my url, and I get only old files, not the new one I uploaded today. I think perhaps I don't know where to look to find the updated file from Kompozer, or perhaps it's just not there. I said I was on shaky ground there! :-) I've never understood how exactly, but I know that web sites have a "root level" (for want of a better term) directory in which at least the index.htm or index.html file must exist. I've always assumed that this directory name was specified by the host, and I suspect it is used by the host to easily find the index.html file - which does not necessarily appear in the browser path either. In my experience, that directory is never visible in the path shown in the browser though it is somehow implied and required as the "starting point" for the web site. If genealogy_html works for you, then it should work for Neil and everyone else as well. I was just hoping (without much justification evidently) that that might be the root cause of Neil's final issue. Part of that hope was based on the fact that the invisible (but required) root level directory for the site I'm paid to maintain is public_html! Oh well... I have added that to my notes in case I ever get around to working on my Freepages site again. That information may well have been documented before, but if so I must have missed it. Charles (and Neil), USGenWeb and Homepages accounts have a public_html folder. Freepages accounts do not. I still can't access my Freepages account because of the duplicate account name issue, but the correct remote directory for Freepages accounts is genealogy_html. And Anne hopes to have the other directories available soon. Pat Asher

OK, Pat - you are likely correct. Oh well... Charles, I think you are confusing the issue here. My files are also located in the genealogy_html directory BUT you do not see any part of that in my site url http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/ I know genweb sites are uploaded to the public_html directory but not freepages sites. Pat G -----Original Message----- From: Charles Carothers [mailto:csquared71@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2018 6:54 PM To: Freepages Help <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Subject: [FreeHelp]Help with Filezilla 7. So why were all my files in genealogy_html but they are now in public_html you ask? My theory is that it is due to the Freepages kerfuffle. Back in the good old pre-kerfuffle days, there were like 9 (ISTR) different directories available in Freepages. You could put your content in any or all of the 9. I don't believe that structure is available now, at least not yet. It may actually still exist, but I don't think Freepages is not going to allow you to view it with your browser. I don't remember all the categories but I'm pretty sure besides genealogy there was one for churches, one for cemeteries, one for computers/technology and so on. My guess is that you (logically and wisely) chose genealogy back then and that is why your original site was in the genealogy_html directory.
Hi Neal, I think everyone who responded has given you some good advice! I thought I would just mostly ask a few questions in the hope that you may find the source of your problem by trying to answer them. I think you are on the very doorstep of success! For some of the questions, I've copied what you said and added my questions interspersed with your text. "I have in my Filezilla program the Local Site on the left pane, including genealogy_html, with a dozen web pages underneath it. On the Remote site, right pane, under genealogy_html, I have basically the same list." 1. When you say "a dozen web pages", do you see file names that end with either .htm or .html? You *can* upload whole directories, but you don't really need that complication right now. 2. Above the list of (hopefully) .htm or .html files, do you see a directory structure? If not, go to the View tab and click on "Local directory tree". This allows you to see above the list of file names exactly where you are on your local hard drive. Same thing applies to View and "Remote directory tree" for the host side. "Now what? I open Kompozer, pick a file and make minimal changes (e.g., today's date in the upper right corner), save the page. Then I close Kompozer." 3. Sounds like exactly what you should be doing! "Go back to Filezilla, highlight the same files on left and right panes. Right click the file on the left, and file names scroll by, but nothing seems to happen. Is it uploading?" 4. Nothing should "scroll by" when you right click on a file in the left pane. It should pop up a small window with a list of choices. The top choice should be "Upload". When you left click on Upload, assuming you are editing a file that already exists on the host side, another window will pop up that says "Target file already exists". In the window, it will show you both the local and remote file sizes, dates, etc. To the right are a list of check circles. The top one, which should be checked is "Overwrite". Click OK in the lower right hand corner of the window. When the upload is complete, a smallish blue message box will pop up that says "Transfers finished". That will go away by itself eventually, or you can click on it to make it disappear. Your modified local file now has a twin on the host. Any visible changes you have made to the local html file will now be visible in your browser. (I realize that is not the case for you yet, so I'll address some possibilities as to why not below.) 5. You might have multiple local copies of your web site. If the file you edited is not the one in the path you uploaded, then you have uploaded your existing html file again with no changes. Make sure that the entire path to your html file in Kompozer is identical to the path you see above the left pane in Filezilla. 6. OK, I'm on shaky ground here because I have not yet tried to do anything with my old Freepages site. Here is what I know: when I type https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks into the Chrome browser I see your site. I do not however see genealogy_html in the path to the site. I actually suspect this may be your final remaining problem that is not allowing you to see the changes to your site that you have made. I went back to a copy of an email from Anne and followed this link to see what she said about using Filezilla. https://www.ancestry.com/academy/course/connect-rootsweb-filezilla The thing I noticed as I watched the video is that when she connected to the remote side, the directory was public_html. I'm thinking that for now anyway this may be a requirement! If so, that explains why changes to genealogy_html don't show up in your browser. So, with some degree of ignorance on my part, I'm going to suggest that you navigate to the public_html directory on the host side and upload your modified html file to there. Then check with your browser to see if the page changes. If this works, hurray! Also, if it works, I would strongly suggest that you rename your local side directory from genealogy_html to public_html as well. It will save a lot of hair pulling, which I can ill afford. :-) 7. So why were all my files in genealogy_html but they are now in public_html you ask? My theory is that it is due to the Freepages kerfuffle. Back in the good old pre-kerfuffle days, there were like 9 (ISTR) different directories available in Freepages. You could put your content in any or all of the 9.
