    3. Thanks Pat. They sure are symlinked I just did a small change and can see it on sites and freepages. I can only FTP using Sites. users.freepages  goes nowhere. Will sites.rootsweb remain as FTP etc? Problem with links on my banner menus is that I made them Absolute. I am looking at changing and simplifying so I can use relative. 3. Not sure how well this works as the table width is specified in percentage and the cells in pixels. And I assume this will reside inside a container with a specified width. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/judy-cemetery-table.html Barry is better at css than I am but just cleaning the tables themselves is a massive job. 3. If each cell is going to have the exact same amount of text in it (no more than one line, then yes I suppose you can skip it. If not, then you need the vertical align so that all text is at the top rather than the default of the middle. Which is why it is easier for me to use css but then I have very few tables. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/judy-table-example.html This is NOT how I would normally style tables. It is just an example of how it would look. I was asking about searches done from within my site, not searching the whole Internet with Google, Yahoo, etc. search engines. I had tried searching for data in Tags, including Meta tags, but his reply inspired me to do more research, and sure enough FreeFind's indexing of a site does look at terms listed in a <Meta name=keywords statement. That's the best solution even if Google, Yahoo & Bing now ignore keywords and Google even penalizes you if it thinks you are misusing keywords. But FreeFind uses them just the way I want. Thanks Ralph for inspiring me to take a closer look at how FreeFind's spider actually works.

I stripped out padding but the table is still fatty-celled with default (I read at W3 schools) of center, which is not what I want. And do tables need valign="top" or can I remove those? Lastly, if I just get the tables copied to new pages, can I *easily* come back later to get the tables to stop being fatty-celled? 3. Hi Neil, I've realized there is a really simple way you can check whether the file you are editing is the one you are uploading. 1. Refresh the view in both panes. (Either F5, View>Refresh, or click the icon at the top that looks like two little green snakes chasing each other in a circle.) 2. Note the exact size of your index.html file in the Filesize column of the left pane. 3. Add one character to your index.html file - can be just a space somewhere, and then save the file. 4. Refresh the view again. 5. Check that the size of index.html in the left pane increased by one. If so, you are uploading the file you are editing. If not, you need to navigate to the correct place in either Kompozer or Filezilla. I can't tell you which one because I don't know your file structure or which copy you really want to edit and upload. You can do a similar comparison between the left and right panes before and after uploading. However, the file sizes on the two sides may not be the same due to the way different operating systems account for file size. An increase of one character on the left should produce an increase on the right, but not always by exactly one. For example, I see a difference in reported file sizes between the left and right pane of several thousand bytes for an identical file in my site! Once you get this sorted out, and before you upload anything, stop and think hard about what you really want to do. For example, is the remote copy of index.html more recent than the local copy? If so, you may want to download it before you edit and upload. Do you have a copy of all your local site files on a flash drive? If not, stop and make that so, being sure you copy to the flash drive from the correct directory. If you have multiple local copies of your site I would back each of them up to a flash drive just in case you have an irreplaceable something in one of the local copies. Ruff's obit, for example? Remember that just as you overwrite remote files when you upload, you overwrite local files when you download. The same ideas apply to all of your site files. Only you can make these sorts of decisions. Best regards, -- Charlie Carothers

    3. Thank you http://sites.rootsweb.com/~lankshear/ appeared back yesterday and also the original http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~lankshear/genealogy/ I use SSI for navigation headers and sidebars as in <!--#include virtual="/~lankshear/_includes/lankshear-navleft.htm" And for consistency across folders I coded it all with direct links to the pages as in <li><a TITLE="Lankshear - sources used in Research" HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lankshear/Lankshear/index.htm">LANKSHEAR</a></li> So the SSI fails when it links to freepages as that is a different domain to "sites" Did I hear that "sites" was temporary and that "freepages" would return? Should I convert my freepages links to "sites" or is there another way to handle that HREF across folders? Filezilla FTP works for me on "sites". I was having problems and read http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html and realised I needed to change my new password to agree with rules that Pat laid out. But I cannot filezilla to the old "freepages". So it looks like there are now two versions of my pages on different domains? What is the plan? from Ron Lankshear

    1. [FreeHelp]Re: img floats - CSS for centering and text centering
    2. Ralph Taylor
    3. I don't get "float" and "center". The float property has four possible values: 1. left, 2. right, 3. none, and 4. inherit. You can float an element to the left or to the right; you can float it not float it at all; or you can have the float inherited (left, right or none). What float accomplishes is to free up vertical space and allow other following content to flow into the freed space. Say, you want a picture on the left and a paragraph beside it on its right; float can do that. Float doesn't include centering; that's left to "align". (The W3C page on align seems misleading.) You can, of course, center-align the content of floated elements. To center-align text within a floated element, include the property text-align: center. And, you really don't need CSS to do in two steps what you can do with HTML in one step. To center an image, I use <.p align=center> or <.div align=center>, followed by the image tag and then closed. This centers both image and text within the element. To do the same thing with CSS, I'd have to set up a class with the CSS properties and then call the class to invoke the properties. -rt_/)

This could very well be why the browser brings up >the older copy of the file. Assuming you are using a Windows OS, There is one other thing that has not been mentioned, but can drive webmasters nuts - and that is caching by your browser. If you have uploaded a revised version of a page to the server, and you are not seeing the updated version, try CTRL+F5 in your browser. A browser can be Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc. F5 does a standard reload. Ctrl+F5 forces your browser to ignore your cache and download the page (that you might have updated) from the server so you see what is actually residing on the server. Pat A.
