    3. Neil, there are NOT four separate sites. There is one site that happens to display with four different urls right now. That will probably change but we won't know until rootsweb finalizes all of their work. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks/ The most important thing right now is to have the complete sight on YOUR COMPUTER and KNOW WHERE IT IS. Do you know how to use Windows Explorer on your computer? What version of Windows are your using? Perhaps this will help https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.lehigh.edu_-7Einimr_computer-2Dbasics-2Dtutorial_windowsexplorer.htm&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=bXDkcrG0uDsHKUq5EzuzJDLe_DCqeTaDR_RO-Qsymlc&s=uhYuMtgzBdfAExOIawtxMIrHrMJnQNGHT6Z33VvLqFA&e= Once you know where your site is on YOUR COMPUTER then you can work with it in Kompozer and Filezilla. Since you appear to be already editing your site in Kompozer, it must be somewhere on your computer. Start FileZilla On the left side pane you will see a list of files At the top of that pane, you should see a folder with two dots > Clicking it will take you up to the next level on YOUR COMPUTER. If you keep doing that, eventually you will see in the smaller pane on the left This PC with your drive letters listed Clicking on the C Drive will show you a list of files/programs on the C Dive Click on Users which will show you a list of Users > You should see one with a little person and whatever name you are using on YOUR COMPUTER Clicking on that one will show you another list with Documents as one of the folders That is probably where your site is located but only you can answer that cause we don't know where you saved it. 3. Hi Anne, Could you please let me know where my site "sarakay" is on the queue? It's a local history site as well as a genealogy site. One of the high school teachers uses it in class and is wondering if it will be up soon. I submitted the restoration request form right after you made it available on the Rootsweb blog - which I think was in the first part of July. Thanks! 2. Neil Boyer
    3. I opened all four of the URLs that Charlie posted, below, and all of them work and all of them appear to display my site as I wanted it. The blue border around all of the pages is there. Don't know what made it go away yesterday. So now tell me: Should I pick one of the four, open it and continue to operate my site as if there were no problem? I would have no problem with that. Or, as Charlie suggested, should I put my preferred link and everything that follows from it into a new directory that can easily be found? Charlie also said this: In the "Local directory tree" above your local files, if you scroll to the top you should be able to see "This PC". Under that you should see C:, D:, etc. which are your drives. Click on that drive and what you see in the pane below are the highest level contents of that drive. My response is that I can't find the Local Directory Tree. Charlie once showed me how to do that, but the information has slipped away. Also, I don't see "This PC" which should be at the top of the drive. Clearly, I'm looking in the wrong place. I think I need to straighten out this confusion if I'm going to address the Filezilla problem. Is there on this site a guide to look at directories and how to navigate among them. I can see some of this issue about directories if I go to Filezilla and look at the double panes, and look above them, but I don't know how to get to the directories without going through filezilla. (I'm sorry, but I seem to be regressing among issues that I thought I already understood. But thanks for being indulgent. (PS: I don't remember any problems like this when I first started using Kompozer and Filezilla. Maybe that was a different era.) Neil

You really probably should create an empty directory on one of your drives and download your entire remote site to it. Then copy that to a flash drive as well. If you have a backup like that of your remote site and a backup of every copy of your local site then you can always get back to where your are now. I may have slightly overstated the case for the index.html file. However, if I recall correctly, there was a rule back in 2003 anyway when I first started my site that said essentially, "In order to not have to include the root file of your site in the path, you must name it index.html". Therefore to be as kind as I could be to anyone who wanted to access my site, I made my root file index.html. We all want to be kind to our users, right? :-) My 15 year old memory could be tarnished a bit, but I believe that is still true, at least to some degree. I have found that I can successfully access your site with any of four following slightly different URLs. sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks/index.html https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks/index.html This strongly suggests to me that the "root level" of your site is indeed a file named index.html. BTW, the first two display "Not secure" ahead of the URL in the browser address line, but for now anyway who really cares! Hope that helps! -- Charlie Carothers <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__freebiblecommentary.org&d=DwIBaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=-DbnCAsWgcXLmn42M7AsGO2TVO8VZA8jkOTHX1AqXj4&s=LMVHWo6va75gYtyS3NGy6Dnoj56-LbBeIw0n2HTol4o&e=>

A directory with an index.htm file will open if the directory only is entered without any designated file. Pat, I believe you are correct that there must be an index.htm, index.html, or index.shtml (although .shtml didn't used to be necessary for the server to check for server side includes.) My understanding is that the default display of the directory index when index.htm(l) did not exist was considered a security issue and so was discontinued. 3. Neil, which drive are yours files on for the site you are editing? That is the drive that should show for your Local Site in Filezilla. My site has a lot of old letters. But when people try to search the site for references to them they usually are unsuccessful. For example, they want to find pages on my site that refer to John Q. Jones. But a document may refer to him as "John Jones", "J.Q. Jones", "Mr. Jones", "Uncle John". "father", etc. so the searcher comes up empty handed. In most cases, I have a link to that person's entry in my WorldConnect tree, but the contents of anchor tags aren't searched. Obviously I can add a note to each document saying "[This document mentions: John Q. Jones, Sally (Brown) Smith, ..." But that's rather obtrusive. Neither HTML comments or CSS comments are searched, but is there a way to add "index terms" to a page that will be searched, but not display when just viewing the page? I thought of making the text white, so it will be "invisible", but I'm not sure that would work on everyone's device, browser, etc. Surely others have encountered and dealt with this problem. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2018 13:08:35 -0400 From: JFlorian <cageycat@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: Identifying People for Site Searches To: Freepages Web Sites <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <CAE5hz-DC0q6CUjjTW-Jq7_xE2kKprNOjWYsSphXAyx4ncgLAXg@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Bite the bullet and transcribe the letters and annotate the text. ...father [John Q. Jones] -- put it right into the text. ------------------------------ 1. Thanks for the suggestion. The letters are transcribed. That's why the site search (I'm currently using FreeFind) works. But it only works if the words in the query are exact matches. Most of the names have been turned into links, so when reading a page, it's easy to click and find out who is being referred to. It's not a matter of avoiding work, it's a matter of minimizing the obtrusiveness -- both in terms of the flow of reading and preserving the look of the original. But letting the browsers do their thing without trying to impose the kind of control you can get with word processing or desk top publishing. Your suggestion certainly does allow searching -- but still requires the search to guess what to search for. I was hoping to add multiple index term, such as "John Quincy Jones", "John Jones" and sometimes "J. Quincy Jones" -- without cumbering up the page with a lot of distracting text when many people are referred to.. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2018 16:40:46 -0600 From: "Ralph Taylor" <rt-sails@comcast.net> Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: Identifying People for Site Searches To: <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <0C02CE9FE2AE46099E9728AC309D923F@Rt2013PC> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" What you're bumping up against is the "literality" of computers. "John O. Jones" is not identical to "John Jones". This is a problem I face in my Taylor Family Genes site; it has a sub-directory devoted to user-submitted family trees, https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.TaylorFamilyGenes.in fo_fam-2Dtrees&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx 1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=ylzZ5g8rHKaN_O47rHEvpvhn0S6H9M-Hp3zOqGh7kuc&s=LPKirS4c_ JxYmLsS_evU8JcG6Zhf0oAQAmJNfuCGkYY&e=. To facilitate search-engine performance, I edit name and date information to put it in standardized form. (Submitters use too many different conventions.) I don't think you should change original documents to make them fit the search engine. But you could add name-varaint labels to the docs to make them findable. Sort of like putting "keywords" in a meta tag. If each document is in a separate file (and then "included"), you could you could use meta tags in the head section to help the search engine. Your labels wold not be visible on the page but they would render the file findable. ------------------------------ Ralph, Thanks for understanding why I don't want to clutter the reader's screen with a lot o index terms, And I do use meta tags (but peraps not enough to help people wo are doing web searches with Google, Yahoo, etc. to find my pages. But that's not what I'm asking about. My question has to do with people who are already on my family history web site, and want to search withing it for names of people. The search tool I've installed is "FreeFind", but I think it's competitors all work pretty much the same. They ignore the contents of HTML tags. So either I do someting visible like add a superscript footnote number in te main text and then put the names in visible text that both humans and the FreeFind software can read. Or, I somehow make it invisible to humans (such as white letters on a white background - which would let the site search software find it. Surely others who use site search services have grappled with this issue. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2018 17:45:25 -0500 From: Charles Carothers <csquared71@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp]Filezilla help To: Freepages Help <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <CAGmaTgzJ=GkO+kE4nGswOZc7x5XveRRaAzmX3E6FH0eu=wJAgw@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" > > Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2018 11:30:22 -0400 > From: "Neil Boyer" <naboyer@comcast.net> > Subject: [FreeHelp]Re: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 208 - > More Filezilla > To: <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> > Cc: "'Neil A. You are editing and uploading index.html, right? If not, I strongly suggest you concentrate on only that file for now. That is the one that contains your "Revised September 6, 2010" text. By doing a Ctrl-u on your home page, I can see that date on line 24 of that file. How about for an experiment you edit that to August 24, 2018 and I will look again and see if I see the change? Maybe that will tell us something. You may already know this; if so my apologies. Not only is there a default and required directory, there is a default and required file as the "root" of your web site. That file is index.html. While not required, you can add that to the path in your browser just after boyerlinks/. I just did that and it works, showing me the same page. For right now, that is the only file I would suggest you edit and upload. > > > > > > I found the remote directory tree, as Charlie recommended, and clicking on Upload > > in the left pane on one of my files did produce the message "Target > File Already Exists." > > I chose to override, and the file said "Transfers finished." > > Super! I can open it with the URL you gave me off-line and the links all work, but if I look at what I think is the uploaded revised website, nothing new appears. I think the Kompozer and Filezilla files are the same, and so I guess I have not yet found the source of my problem. So that if the search entry is John Q. Jones, your search engine will look for John + Q+ Jones and deliver somewhat relevant results, including those that include only John + Jones, or only +Jones. I don't know of any search engine that will assume "Mr." or "Uncle" or "father" is part of the search parameter, and if your visitors are using those search terms, it is up to you to educate your visitors as to how searches can and do work. You can explain that they can search for "John Q. Jones" enclosed in quotes, and their searches will return only that precise sequence of letters and spaces. OTOH, the entry John Q. Assuming you are using a Windows OS, There is one other thing that has not been mentioned, but can drive webmasters nuts - and that is caching by your browser. If you have uploaded a revised version of a page to the server, and you are not seeing the updated version, try CTRL+F5 in your browser. A browser can be Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc. F5 does a standard reload. Ctrl+F5 forces your browser to ignore your cache and download the page (that you might have updated) from the server so you see what is actually residing on the server. The float property has four possible values: 1. left, 2. right, 3. none, and 4. inherit. You can float an element to the left or to the right; you can float it not float it at all; or you can have the float inherited (left, right or none). What float accomplishes is to free up vertical space and allow other following content to flow into the freed space. Say, you want a picture on the left and a paragraph beside it on its right; float can do that. Float doesn't include centering; that's left to "align". (The W3C page on align seems misleading.) You can, of course, center-align the content of floated elements. To center-align text within a floated element, include the property text-align: center. And, you really don't need CSS to do in two steps what you can do with HTML in one step. To center an image, I use <.p align=center> or <.div align=center>, followed by the image tag and then closed. This centers both image and text within the element. To do the same thing with CSS, I'd have to set up a class with the CSS properties and then call the class to invoke the properties. -rt_/) ------------------------------ Subject: Digest Footer -To contact the freepages-help list administrator, send an email to freepages-help-admin@rootsweb.com. -To post a message to the freepages-help mailing list, send an email to freepages-help@rootsweb.com. __________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to freepages-help-leave@rootsweb.com with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and the body of the email with no additional text. ------------------------------ End of FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 210 *********************************************** _______________________________________________ Email preferences: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_rootswebpref&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=hW7x-e7qSgDHggJDzALHdfvUCM0jwuiUy3RdxsVMqnE&s=2r0sQfz8BwToNfnMac8tTIOBkO9tQAqNHg17m1on9ic&e= Unsubscribe and Archives https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/search/freepages-help Privacy Statement: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2JWBOdY&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=hW7x-e7qSgDHggJDzALHdfvUCM0jwuiUy3RdxsVMqnE&s=p2trgn-u3nwWFibGjRqYQmJoh-W2-HkbiMSGR8mN6cg&e= Terms and Conditions: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2HDBym9&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=hW7x-e7qSgDHggJDzALHdfvUCM0jwuiUy3RdxsVMqnE&s=n5Id_Vp3F4v2WMzIKxSVlXFzm6wwzH522xv9HucBw_Y&e= Rootsweb Blog: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__rootsweb.blog&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=hW7x-e7qSgDHggJDzALHdfvUCM0jwuiUy3RdxsVMqnE&s=l38FwcBZiGWTSUbhveVM8XxjAHD_D7clWdytw_uHg4c&e= RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

I think perhaps I don't know where to look to find the updated file from Kompozer, or perhaps it's just not there. I can open it with the URL you gave me off-line and the links all work, but if I look at what I think is the uploaded revised website, nothing new appears. I think the Kompozer and Filezilla files are the same, and so I guess I have not yet found the source of my problem. I won't pursue the public.html directory idea, since you seem to agree that wasn't the issue. > > > > > > Thanks again for your efforts. > > > > > > Neil > > The URL I am using for your site, and now have bookmarked :-) is: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks/index.html The index.html is implied and is optional. ------------------------------ End of FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 210 ***********************************************

    3. If I go to a directory that does not contain an index.html file or whatever rootsweb is using for the default page, I get a This page isn't available to you! We've encountered a 403 error message which would indicate that the server is set up to deliver that message. So if there is no default index file (whatever the names are) the site is not going to display. Maybe Anne or Pat A can clarify what file names are acceptable as a default home page. I normally use index.html no matter what the directory/sub-directory is if I want something to display with out having to add the filename to the url. But if, say, that you have a directory just for images; an index file usually isn't needed. Sometimes, a blank idex.htm file is used to prevent viewers from seeing all the contents of a directory. They can see only those files which are linked. -rt_/) _______________________________________________ Email preferences: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_rootswebpref&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=4gARBgm8XF3gDKMraMfjA_tXYFa3RN5jvlGvC7K2CNM&s=bvQ1Q3cCd3JiWYmVljMP4DLwATT05XObcRtSVX8-xPc&e= Unsubscribe and Archives https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/search/freepages-help Privacy Statement: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2JWBOdY&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=4gARBgm8XF3gDKMraMfjA_tXYFa3RN5jvlGvC7K2CNM&s=unLK2wAV2B9L-RTNfBI4X7lll130TDxGLdlmW1YmXgE&e= Terms and Conditions: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2HDBym9&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=4gARBgm8XF3gDKMraMfjA_tXYFa3RN5jvlGvC7K2CNM&s=gZ1tNL5yTmJQpcxcyi5cxCx4-7InPck6UerOsia-47k&e= Rootsweb Blog: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__rootsweb.blog&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=AGsq94QXfKqnOmeiylQOdyiSx1pxsPac8QlHnLzZS9o&m=4gARBgm8XF3gDKMraMfjA_tXYFa3RN5jvlGvC7K2CNM&s=ulrhQzfNhXaH7BgkuB82rVtx2GNR_vRGol4KSzJlTMc&e= RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    3. I saw a bit of misinformation in a post here; it needs correction. Index.htm (or index.html, index.shtml, etc.) is NOT a required file in any directory and it is a default ONLY if it exists. 3. Judy, it was a chance to play around with some cleaning queries a friend of mine had created for EW. I had forgotten how well they worked. I sent you a few more as attachments. I was just showing you an example of what I'm up against. I have a LOT more to clean. sigh. Right now, I'm liking your " tablea " CSS and the pages aren't messing up. YAY.
