Heidi, I use Gmail as my mail program and IE7. On every attachment are options to View or to Download. View opens it into a browser window. I don't know if other mail programs or browsers have the same ability. In Excel, if you have a simple table, 7 columns across, however long with the the A - B - C column headers and auto numbering "on", although it is easy to remove the A-B-C Row, it can be a big pain to get the numbes to go to "Normal" and not be bold and huge. People often send me Excel sheets as submissions. When I get cemetery databases on Excel, there's a lot to do to change it to HTML code. I open it in Google, go to View Source, then start stripping out all the code I don't want with Find>Replace. I took out all instances of "bold" and "font". I'm left with the table row and column and widths, and of course the data. I then copy it to Frontpage. In Frontpage2000, the settings on the stripped file showed Normal formatting, Normal Font, Normal Size. But I still had Excel A-B-C and numbers in the first column-- big and bold. I highlighted the column and tried to use the Bold command to make sure it wasn't really bold-- it wasn't, so no effect. The numbers were also centered, even though it wasn't found in the code. I could not see in the coding what code controls the numbering in the stripped Excel to HTML code. Well, I finally found how to make the row numbering go back to Normal looking. I highlighted the column and went to Cell Properties. There, I saw a check mark next to "Header Cell". When I unchecked it, the numbers look like the rest of the page. I then "cut" the A-B-C header row too. Interestingly, the code in the table looks exactly the same as before I found that check-box. So I thought I'd pass along this tip in case other people come across the same problem. It can save hours of trying to manually re-enter the numbers in HTML. I'm not sure how you'd find or fix the "problem" if not using a WYSIWYG Editor. Only thing I haven't found a way to fix is that the numbering in Excel starts on the A - B - C column header, not on line 1 of data. So if Excel says there are 816 burial names, it's actually 815 minus the A-B-C header row (which is removed). To save time, I end up putting a "Note" that the numbering is one-off rather than re-typing numbers. Judy

Barry, I didn't know you helped with translations along with coding! (wink!) I prefer English simply because I've never had a good ear for languages; somehow I even got through HS without the required 3 yrs. However, I must say I wish I had known the sentence "Dette er den eneste advisering, du vil modtage, mens denne person ikke træffes" when I was raising my pre-teen-to-teenager, though she might have not understood the "unavailable" part. LOL Well, back to doing cemetery pages -- got a question about those which I'll post some other time. FastStone Image Viewer 4.2 which is available from _ http://www.faststone.org/ - is a Freeware program that gives you the options, amongst others, to do what you want. The alternative is to place an absolutely positioned <div> over that containing your image or background image, and give that div a white background and apply the css opacity property to it. A further <div> is then used to carry the text, and in this case an IE7 logo. An example is at:- http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/test/opacity.html The Image shown on loading the page is a fixed image, but clicking the Background Image button will change it to a repeating background image. Clicking the Fixed Image button will revert to the original image. Barry
Hi David, > Is it possible to receive all freepages emails in bulk, perhaps once per > day, rather than receiving so many individual emails? Yes, a digest is available if that is your preference. Details are on the list's "home" page at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/Freepages-Help.html To make the changes on your own, you'll need to unsubscribe from the "L" format, that is the individual posts, then subscribe to the digest. Alternatively, you could use the email address on the home page to contact the list administrator and ask if they would make the change for you. This applies to every Rootsweb mailing list - the details are on the individual list's home page. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>

All you need to do is visit Rootsweb "Mailing Lists" and search for Freepages. Then unsub from regular list mail... and subscribe to Digest mail. For Freepages it is ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ You also HAVE to specify the correct directory genealogy_html or whichever one you are using. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/tutorials/filezilla-instructions.htm is for using Filezilla. pat

I wonder if the image itself was saved at a smaller resolution, then expanded when added, if the image would remain as opaque? I had noticed that when I had tried to copy an enlarged image from a "thumbnail" that it had gone opaque. Just an idea for what it's worth? (May also be helpful for those here concerned with others copying their images? I do not know "how" the image was made to "go opaque" when attempt to copy was made...)
