    3. Oh yeah!  I saw that no subject and just the email addy (a clue) so I didn't open it. Lots of people getting "infected" and the deadly programs look so "legitimate". Beware Vista users too, as a program comes up; Win 7 too.  One way to "stop" the popup boxes is to hit ALT+F4 and don't click on anything, not even to close the boxes telling you a scan or an infection was detected! (only makes things worse!)!  Or shut down and get out using CTRL+ALT+DEL to run Task Manager, close all programs and shut down safely.  Then SCAN and SCAN again.  (Comprehensive Scan)  My son had unwittingly allowed what looked like legit anti-virus to run which disabled his computer completely. We had to take it back to factory!  (He's not on my network, but next door.  Norton helped us get everything back to be useable, but all data was infected and lost.)  My mother had something come in & called me immediately w/o closing or clicking anything.  (also next door and we were able to catch it (Norton did catch it as well) an "intrusion was blocked"... I did the above, shut down, scanned, scanned again,  and she's fine.     Another friend suggests a malware removal tool in addition to Anti-virus but I misplaced the link. I'm sure it can be found on-line and is free, but be careful what you downlaod!   Also, Back up your files before these things hit, change passwords where you can too.  My son found a "Fix" for a Vista intrusion that scared me to death, saved it to my desktop via phone as I rapidly typed the "fix" into a Notepad and then opened it.  Not everyone is as lucky to have good, fast help.    These are just suggestions that worked for me to remain (so far) pretty free of these buggers!   (Delete your history too and allow critical automatic updates as the fixes come thru that as well) Hope this helps some who may be new to all "this".  But do your own searches on what I've said here too.  Don't just take my word for it.  Different systems respond in different ways...) Happy computing!   Kathie B. --- On Tue, 10/19/10, Freeps List Admin <freepages-help-admin@rootsweb.com> wrote: From: Freeps List Admin <freepages-help-admin@rootsweb.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] ADMIN NOTE: Trojans and loggers, oh my! A perfectly fine genealogy program with loads of tools and features. However, if you choose to pay their fee for the Deluxe Edition you'll be sent a "key", a code to unlock the additional features. You can see at that link above what you get in each Edition. I have the Deluxe, have had for several years now. It's the only genealogy program I've used for my records, though I've looked at one or two others out of curiosity. Looking at the lists on that page above, the Deluxe features I make the most use of are mapping, the relationship calculator, pdf production, and the ability to add a variety of documents. That's just my preferences. Deluxe and Standard users can swap data files between themselves without problem. The Standard user simply won't be able to access the fields that are Deluxe-only, but they're still there in the file. There's also excellent peer-to-peer support at their free mailing list, Legacy User Group - http://legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard *** Please reply to the list *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>

    3. Thanks everyone!  I also saw the free video tutorials and watched them first. I did get the 7.0 Deluxe verision and the cd to upgarde to 7.4 and a huge book!   Scared to death to overwrite all my paf files in .zip by 'importing' PAF; I need to backup everything before I install this program.  I'm not sure how to "import" a PAF .zip file?  I would think I would have to unzip it first.  Don't wnat to create conflicts or lose my hard work.  Anyone here deal with this issue?   The free version was recommended by one Charles Bourland Rice, Jr. who has a neat genealogy "how-to" site (and is published)and also some ancestors possibly in common with me, or knows his neighbors may.   Sorry somewhat OT but perhaps the .zip file question is applicable to rootsweb as well?  I thank you all for your emails and private replies.  A great group as per usual!   Kathie B.   --- On Mon, 10/18/10, Wendy Howard <wendy.howard@gmail.com> wrote:   Pat said: > I thought they used to have a FREE version They still do.  :-) It is free to download the program and install it on your computer.  http://legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp

    3. Thanks, Pat.  I did find my posts using the search engine with my email addy.  For the ones not sent to the group, perhaps I didn't  hit "reply all" and just replied to an individual (Whipple).  Not really important. I love the archives!  Thanks for the reminder, so I don't ask questions that have been asked a gazillion times before. I am learning HTML finally.   I'll check my settings as my own email is also coming into Junk at times. It's odd that so many from the list come thru in my Inbox, and others, randomly are selected for Junk.  I do mark them as safe and put them into my Inbox. Time for some 'housecleaning' and password changes (as well as adding everyone on the list to my addy book?  That's alot of people!)   Thanks again, everyone!     Kathie B. --- On Sun, 10/17/10, Pat Asher <pjroots@att.net> wrote: From: Pat Asher <pjroots@att.net> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Test to group (was Excel auto numbering, etc.) To: "Freepages-Help" <Freepages-Help@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, October 17, 2010, 12:39 PM At 11:33 AM 10/17/2010, Kabe wrote: >Can you all let me know if you are receiving my posts of late?  I >haven't seen them coming thru, and some of yours including this one >are going into my Junk/Spam Folder. 3. There is an easy way to convert Excel tables without formatting to HTML tables using formulae. in say cell "K3" put the following formula ="<td>&A3&"</td>" Copy this formula down and across to get the rows and columns you want. Then in a cell further to the right put the following formula ="<tr>"&K3&L3&M3&"</tr>" for a three column table concatenate more cells between the "<tr>" and "</tr>" for wider tables Put a <table> above and </table> below then copy into your text editor and the code will produce the table data without any extraneous formatting. 3. Just a further comment that I've said before but I failed to state in the "tip" email I sent earlier... I can't open the Excel sheets because my Excel is older than the submitter's program and I've not had extra time to learn a different program (like Open Office). When I saw that gmail could open files in a browser, it means I don't have to worry about using a program. My method of opening the sheet in a browser and then switching Excel code to what I want in HTML may not be the best for everyone, but it is working for me. I've identified "effects" I hate (like valign=top or valign=bottom for cell data) and I remove the "ickky" code along with fonts, etc. My biggest problems have been those Excel headers, the number column, and trying to adjust really wide columns to smaller columns. The header and numbers have been the worst issues for me, so I was tickled to find a solution. Some other method may be better for other people, but using Find/Replace gives me control over what I'm changing or taking out. Plus, it helps me learn more about what the codes are doing (especially the Excel code effects I don't like--LOL). Judy On Fri, Oct 15, 2010 at 7:54 AM, J.A. 3. To convert an Excel (or other spreadsheet) table to HTML, I prefer the method introduced here by Barry Carlson a few years ago. It involves saving the file as plain text before converting it to HTML. One advantage is that it requires knowing only those few HTML codes used in tables. It is the most efficient procedure I've found for producing a HTML table from spreadsheet data without "code bloat" and I've used it many times. Step-by-step: 1. Insert a new, blank column before the first column of data and columns between each data column. This avoids over-writing the data with HTML codes. 2. On a blank row before the data, enter the table-opening tag, <table>; on a blank row after the data, enter the closing table tag, </table>. 3. In the first column (the one you inserted), enter the codes to open a table row and a table cell, <tr><td>. For the header row, substitute <tr><th>. Copy the <tr><td> codes all the way down the column to the end of the table. 4. Between data columns, enter the codes to close one cell & open another, </td><td>. (Header row: </th><th>.) Copy the codes all the way down the table. CSS: If you want CSS styling of some cells, step 4 is the time to specify the class. 5. In the column after the data, enter the codes to close a cell and a row, </td></tr>. Copy the codes all the way down the table. 6. IMPORTANT! "Save as" the file as a plain text file, with a .txt file name extension. DO NOT SAVE AS WEB PAGE! This strips out any formatting that hasn't been given a HTML code. (You'll notice that the text file has tab spaces between each former Excel cell, you can use Control-H to strip these out if desired.) 7. Open the file in Notepad or other plain-text editor; alternatively, open it in your Web editor. Add in the other stuff (doctype, document header, body tags, includes, etc.); if you've created a template, you'll mostly copy and paste. 8. "Save as" the file with a .htm extension. You now have an HTML file with only the formatting that you specifically choose. There is no bloated code to strip out. You can continue to work with it in your Web editor. Two tips: 1. It's helpful to use a second version of the file, so that the original is available in case of mistakes. Save the second version frequently during the processing. 2. For multi-column tables, I like to start with the last column and work from right to left. -rt_/)

    3. Not quite on topic but I often finds when copying HTML to Excel I pick up a graphic that is impossible to delete. Delete the cell or row and it moves up one. I found a macro to delete graphics and that does the trick.
