    1. [FreeHelp] Extra-wide web pages -- Is there something I missed?
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. A dear online friend has no web making experience and is like most people unfamiliar with HTML, meaning, they don't realize just what is involved in making "a" page. (Like I was when I started - LOL). Often, submitters think that it should be no problem if their submission is in one Excel file of over 2,000 to 4,000 rows (and want me to make it into a "web page"). Or, that the submission is "extra-extra" wide, like two oversized book single pages (with both pages very wide--- such as the total open width of a large Court House docket book). For several months I've made and sent examples of how we could present data she has transcribed. But with A to O columns, there will be a right-side scroll no matter what I do. My friend hasn't liked my examples. I suggested we break the data into 2 webpages -- but she wants each person's data to be on one web page (meaning, every person would have A to O data for each person, with new rows for the next person). There are thousands of persons. She wants a first column to bear the original numbering for each person (adding to the width). When I tried explaining that any wide page would have a right-scroll, she just said she doesn't want it like that. She's so determined to fit all the columns on one page that her file is using a Font size 1 -- too small to read. Then, she said she wants users to be able to easily print the page--- and expects that I can make the web page in such a way to squeeze double-wide pages into a 8.5x11.5 sheet of printed paper (profile printing as well)---with a "1" font ! I tried using a real book as an example to say "I can't squeeze more onto a printed page than what the printed page will hold." These pages would be less wide than a Census, but pretty similar to the width of a Census Image. Just like I can't take a long photo the size of three 8x10s (over sofa photo frame) and reduce it to one 8x10 while still keeping the image large enough to see the content, I can't take over-sized tabular data and squeeze it down either. So, could someone here suggest anything else I can say to my friend to make it easier for her to understand why a web page won't do what she wants it to do? Thanks, Judy

    3. I think you covered most everything. The only thing I see you missed is that everyone has a different size monitor at all sort of resolutions so there's no way you can guarantee exactly what someone will see. Other than that, as cold and crass as it sounds, just tell them it can't be done the way they want. _PERIOD_ End of story. They take what they get or don't get anything. From your message it sounds kind of like your doing a census page. When I did a census page I made an extract of the basic information. Enough that a researcher can be fairly certain it's the person they are looking for and then have the image for them to look at to get all the information available. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wyhotsp2/census/index.html On 12/26/2010 01:50 PM, J.A. 1. [FreeHelp] Thanks Randy
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. Year's end maintenance on websites is so boring and often turns rather tedious. The one task I dearly **hated** was having to go clear the Guestbooks of all the "nasty" posts about "certain subjects" and endless sp*mmy-uRLs. It used to feel more disgusting than cleaning public toilets. I detested seeing those horrible posts there and felt these posts detracted from the concept of the freepages sites when the sp*m contained the typical s*x references. And, I often felt guilty I hadn't "cleaned" those pages more often than I could/can do. With heavy heart, I went today to clean -- expecting the usual nastiness. I detested the task before I even finished typing my password. But ---- What a surprise I had though! Both guestbooks were sparkling *clean*. Either my books are harder to find this year (??).... or Randy made some kind of filter (??) to block the nasty stuff from being posted. Whichever it is, I'm happy. Instead of having to remove hundreds of "junk" posts, I could simply read the pleasant comments and hear visitors feedback. So I thought I'd say thanks to Randy for the all work he does -- even if my surprise today was just a coincidence. IF this change is the result of some kind of rootsweb filter in place now, all I can say is "Hooray!" Happy Holidays, Judy

Any suggestions? > ---------------------------- Dan, I've had time to examine the page, and the javascript is using innerHTML to write the contents of the search function as another html page. That is where the problem lies, as the freepages server is recognising additional <body> tags and is placing the script for the banners right in the middle of the script. There is no quick fix. The long term fix would be to change the script so that instead of using innerHTML, it used the Document Object Method (DOM) to create the additional elements, and that wouldn't create a problem with the banners. The more viable fix is to use the http://freefind.com solution, which also uses a javascript dynamic method of placing search results in an iframe, and the search function can easily be added to every page and will search your whole site. There is a slightly modified version of the stock standard version as an example at:- http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~intttp/ Let me know if you'd like some assistance, if you decide to use it. 3. You have somehow combined 2 pages into one. If the search page is in fact mean't to be in a separate window, what you have there is incorrect. You will need to explain in more detail exactly how you expect your index page to look, and what you expect from the search function. Barry

    2. Ralph Taylor
    3. Judy asked "Is there a code (to NOT print lines) that I could insert in my FP pages that my printer would understand and follow?" Go into the "Code" window in FP. To start with the apparently simplest solution first: Look for the <.table> tag and edit it to <.table border=0>. (That's a number zero, not a letter oh.) Or, put all of the poem in one table cell with <.br> tags to break lines & </p> tags to break stanzas (i.e., stanzas = paragraphs). Or, don't use a table. If you want the poem's lines centered, use this structure: <.div align=center> Poem </div> Should you want the margins of the div to be something different than what precedes and follows it, use the margin-left and margin-right attributes. BTW, the advice to import into Word in order to print a HTML document strikes me as needlessly difficult. -rt_/)

    3. Your page is FUBAR. Note second body tag causes the server to insert the ancestry header at that point, which is probably the least of your worries, as some of your Script stuff has escaped from the true header. Maybe the W3C validator would help you out. -R. On 2010-12-20 23:57, Dan Smith wrote: > I just started uploading my web pages to my site "smithpioneers". 1. Re: [FreeHelp] Frontpage2000 - don't want lines of table to print
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. I tried CUTE PDF-creator (free), but it kept my lines from the Frontpage2000 tables. :-( So I copied the page contents made with Frontpage and put it into Word. I found this: http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/mw/s9p2.html I'm posting the steps in case anyone else wants to print a HTML or DOC created page without Table lines showing. The steps to get rid of the lines (table lines) using Word is to: 1. Copy your webpage made from Frontpage2000 or other Editor. 2. Paste it into MS Word. 3. Arrange or re-fix your "tables" (boxes) to sit correctly in Word's upper, lower, right & left margins. (You can adjust margins, too, of course. But you may need to add or remove spaces between tables to get the content as you want it on the page.) 4. Once it looks like you want it for when you print it, first highlight the first "table". 5. Right Click on Table Properties. 6. Click Borders and Shading (box opens) 7. Under Settings (on left), choose "None". 8. Then under Preview (on right), pick the middle little box (mid-way down on that screen)-- It has a horizontal line in it. (You may need to experiment with the 3 small boxes shown there to get rid of lines on all sides of tables.) 9. Click OK... Then click OK on next (the first) screen. 10. You might see that your first table still has lines.... Scroll through the pages--all other tables should have NO lines when viewed under Print Preview. HINT 1: On-screen, you WILL see the table lines on all the tables. HINT 2: Look at Print Preview... the lines should be gone. 11. Now, re-highlight the first table. 12. Repeat steps 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Return to the document. Now all "tables" you had before should have NO lines when you use Print Preview. 13. Print your now "no-lines showing" document. (Note: In Word, it will stil show the Table lines. These steps only affect printing.) Judy On Mon, Dec 20, 2010 at 9:45 AM, Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> wrote: > At 09:02 AM 12/20/2010, J.A. 2. J.A. Florian
    3. I made a series of borderless tables to hold stanzas of a poem. I do NOT want the table lines to print. I really don't like how MS Word sets up its tables so I'd prefer not to use Word. Plus, I already have my poetry lines counted out to fit on a "printed page" in FP2000. So is there any way in Frontpage2000 to print the pages without the borderless lines being printed as well? I use HP 3-in-one Officejet printer. I've looked everywhere for "don't print the dang invisible lines" but can't find instructions in the program, in the printer, or on the Web. Is there a code (to NOT print lines) that I could insert in my FP pages that my printer would understand and follow? If I can't do this in FP2000, then is there a way to NOT print the Rootsweb banners and just print the poem from my website? 1. [FreeHelp] HTML5 - relaxed mark-up
    2. Barry Carlson
    3. HTML5 is the next generation of mark-up, and is currently being supported to variable levels by most modern browsers. The HTML4 v HTML5 differences:- http://www.w3.org/TR/html5-diff/ While a range of new/different elements are now able to be used, there is a relaxation in the mark-up compared with HTML4 and XHTML strict doctypes. Well that's a bit of a fallacy, as the doctype (DTD) should only determine the standards the browser will apply when rendering the code. It's the content type "text/html" or "application/xhtml+xml" that tells the browser what it needs to be looking for in the mark-up. In practice when it comes to the validators, they err on the side of the doctype. The following article should help explain:- http://www.webdevout.net/articles/beware-of-xhtml#content_type In fact there are a lot of valuable facts to be found right throughout the above page. In HTML5 most elements will not require to be closed, but you need to respect the nesting of elements such as the <span> where you <span>change</span> something</span> as indicated. Browsers can determine where an element should end by noting the start of a new one, but they aren't 'mind readers'. The following page:- http://countjustonce.com/test/html5-test.html - validates as valid HTML5 at:- http://validator.nu, and http://validator.w3.org. Browsers back to IE6 will handle this minimalist mark-up. IE5.01 also does, but with a bit of extra help! Copy & Paste the mark-up in the box to your text editor, and you will have the basic code to play with yourself. WARNING:: Don't use this relaxed mark-up for pages on Rootsweb or Freepages servers, as both the opening <body> and the closing </body> tags are required. Barry

    1. [FreeHelp] CSS - Linking to stylesheets
    2. Barry Carlson
    3. The accepted practice of having an off page stylesheet, requires a link to retrieve it, and the normal practice is - <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="my-styles.css" /> - but remembering the link format and then checking on what you need to do should you want to add a supplementary stylesheet for a specific page, can be tiresome. So, I've adopted the alternative method - <style>@import url(my-styles.css); @import url(extra-styles.css);</style> - and if the extra styles required are better just added to the page, then - <style> @import url(my-styles.css); body {font-family:tahoma,arial,font-size:0.9em} #container {margin:30px;} #content2 li {padding:5px 0 5px 0;} </style> - is the way to go. Just remember to treat the @import as a style and end its declaration with a semi-colon. Barry

Hi Larry, My Account *does* use a different login than Freepages or WorldConnect. In fact, those passwords would normally be different since your Freepages password is assigned, but you create your own password for WorldConnect. You must register with My Account and then link all the services you use at RootsWeb to connect them to your My Account. To obtain your Freepages info, go to http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com Enter your email address,, then click the box for Freepages under Web sites to request that information. Pat Asher

    3. You know, I think you may be right. I didn't think of that at the time. For most things I just let the computer handle remembering the passwords for me so I just click and it goes. [ Yeah, I know, that's bad for security ] I have so much connected to Rootsweb I never think about it. You probably do have to have a separate Rootsweb account and somehow it all gets linked together. The file manager login would probably be the way to go for the OP unless they have, or set up, a Rootsweb account. Thanks for pointing that out. 3. Those who prefer to use non MSIE browsers will find that testing your webpage designs in Internet Explorer version from IE8 back to and including IE5.5 can be a laborious process if you need to use cross-browser websites such us http://browsershots.org. Downloadable packages such as IETester and Multi-IE use a default IE engine and emulate other IE versions. Also, the results when using IE Conditional Comments can be variable unless you make modification to your Windows Registry. There is a smart, slick solution available using IE NetRenderer which uses a dedicated virtual Windows environment for each Internet Explorer version. IENetRender doesn't try to trick multiple IE versions to coexist, but uses native IE instances to ensure optimal rendering, fidelity and repeatability. Its core is a proprietary C# application used to control parallel rendering and to generate the virtual screenshot images. The "slick" part is the speed, enter the url of the page you want to test, select the browser for testing and within a couple of seconds you are presented with the rendered page. As soon as Microsoft release the first IE9 Beta version, it will also be supported. On top of that, there is some extra inbuilt functionality available to Firefox users which allows them to select their test requirements from a toolbar. The cost of this "slick solution" is, you guessed it, Free! So the place to go to use it is:- http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/index.php Barry

There are some difficulties - (a) the current sortable function is initiated by input to the header, and (b) that will need to be supplemented by a javascript onclick function which will trigger the function mentioned in (a), which (c) will take some time to develop and check. So, not impossible, the simplest thing is dynamically creating the #anchor, and the hardest is initiating a sort as described in (b). If it can wait until the New Year, I might have some time to play with it. Barry
