Trying to view now, Lorrie. Perhaps you are working on it. I'm using IE7 and am finding: To learn more go to the next slide. (Does nothing. Maybe it should be a link?) 1 2 3 are not clear as to being slide numbers. 1 is showing the main page 2 and 3 changed the text but not the image? Now nothing is happening as only 1 is there (numbers 2 3 still showing but not moving when mouse hovered over. Perhaps you are publishing now? Content is contained. I would put an arrow for next slide somwhere next to the info about "slide show" as the numbers seem to be unrelated that far down. What does joining the mailing list have to do with the slide show for example? Hope you get it working better. No need to have javascript enabled. It is html and css powered. It is a test feature that needs more work but is at a stopping point and now needs some feedback. There are three slides of content, one that is constant and two that should display on hover. I tested it with Chrome, FF, Opera, Konqueror and a Linux version of IE6. Though I would appreciate feedback regarding any browser, I really need feedback regarding IE 7, 8, 9, if 9 is out, and 10 if it is out, too. Any feedback is appreciated but if possible, would you let me know any or all of the following and any other feedback that might help? * does the slide show work? does the content change on hover over each of the two numbers? * is the content contained within the slide show area or does it spill out? * does it stay withing it's borders when enlarged and reduced? * is it's use intuitive? do it need instructions? * how can I improve it? and why? is the suggestion browser related? * any constructive comments welcome Lorrie link to my site <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Edocex/> ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FREEPAGES-HELP-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi Wendy, I would just download a 60 day trial of Expression web. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a73a3a7-3e06-41 25-b3c6-f9c10387e9cc&displaylang=en - it is £25.00 if you are a student. This is so good to use and it highlights any errors you make, so as Pat advised, if you work in 'Split View' where you are able to see the webpage and it's accompanying HTML at the same time, you will see where you have gone wrong and will be able to correct - or ask this List. It is the new web program that Microsoft brought out to replace Frontpage, and is far, far better. You could use a template, from the program, which has many, or a Free one. I would also advise you to read Pat's excellent websites. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/ Try this one to start with. You will find that Pat's tutorials are so good and clearly written. Let us know what you intend to do, and the List will advise you further. Best of luck with whatever decision you come to. Bear in mind though, that web pages are made up of HTML and so you cannot have one if you don't take on board that you have to learn some HTML. Either way, you'll need to know (or learn) some HTML coding. Although that can seem daunting, it isn't terribly hard -- just need some time, patience, and desire to learn it. Many once-novices on this list learned HTML when, like you, we wanted to make a website. People on the list -- from experts to newer webmasters -- help each other figure out how to make "a page" and then "a web site". I think you'll be surprised at how fast you'll learn. If you stay on this List, you'll find people who really know how to write code. Everyone is willing to help. Besides getting a WYSISYG program, one thing people haven't mentioned is that using a template helps a lot. A template page already has the code set up; you'd pick the colors you want (or use the pre-picked colors) and find / use certain features if you want them (such as 1. counter, 2. a JavaScript, 3. an online search tool, etc etc.) After picking a template you like, the most important thing would be understanding the most important code that makes THAT template work, so in case something breaks or fails you know how to fix it. You'd also need to change the template by setting up the META tags in the HEAD area (topmost, inside the code view). Using a WYSIWYG ~and~ a Template together, it becomes so much easier to put text or images onto the template, name the file, edit/change the TITLE, DESCRIPTION, and KEYWORDS in the HEAD of each page, and you're done. Pat Greary offers free templates. Also, I learned a lot in the beginning by using a tool to pick a double background or a triple background from "Backgrounds by Marie" at http://www.artistic-designers.com/bkgds/ Way down at the bottom of her page is a paragraph-like section of teeny tiny links, two of which are | *Triple Background Maker*<http://www.artistic-designers.com/bkgds/mixnmatch.html>| *Triple Background Maker Page 2*<http://www.artistic-designers.com/bkgds/mixnmatch1.html> On those pages, you can use radio buttons to pick and choose 3 backgrounds that go together, and download the images. You also copy the code that is given after you make your choices. Once you've picked those images and if one or two of them are solid colors, a member on this list can help you find a color code to replace the "gif" image -- then instead of having to load 3 images, your page might use 1 or 2 images with a color code for the other image(s) -- (switching to a color code helps decrease loading times). When I first started, all my pages were white background, plain as a white man's handkerchief. Then, I found "Backgrounds by Marie" and thought "perfect solution for me". But after that, Freepages members on this List did a lot of tweaking to the code. One website I have uses images from "Backgrounds by Marie". As time went on, a 2nd website used images from Marie but with code changes. Then, the more websites (areas on Freepages) I wanted to make, the new websites changed even more as people helped me and as I was able to learn more about the changes that people made or suggested. Then, my last 3 or 4 web areas used templates personalized for me by people on the List, such as Pat Greary and Barry and many other people who took time to look at my page or site and make suggestions or even send me the re-written code. I was a huge novice when I started; I thought I could just make a real fancy "professional-looking" site without hassle. But I *had* to take time to learn ~~something~~ about coding. My first lesson was: Do NOT use MSWord or MS Excel to make a page-- it makes heavier (bloated) code that is harder to fix and its tables use heavier code as well. Using a WYSIWYG Web editor, I could see what I was doing and the effect. By making mistakes, I learned how to fix mistakes. I'm by no means an expert, but I'm much further along now that I thought I was capable of doing or learning. When I started, I spent hours (more than 1 day) to complete 1 page. Now, with a template, I can do several or more pages in 1 day which is okay by me; I see it as improvement over how I was when I first began. So, in closing, there's no completely easy way. You'll need to learn some basics about code to do a "webpage" and a "website". But, with choosing a template you like, getting help from people on this list, and learning how to use the code that makes your template and what parts you need to change on every page, you'll soon go from having just one page on your site, to having many pages in your website. I haven't used KompoZer in a while but it has/had a nice text [ raw HTML ] mode where could work and had lots of good buttons to add the codes you wanted. Kind of nice to just click instead of typing everything [ at least for me as I never learned how to really type ]. There are several other programs available if you google for them. I use a program called Quanta+ [ only available for Linux unfortunately ] in text mode all the time. Amongst some of the better features is a setting for the different buttons/tags is a box that pops up when I click a button for all the different properties for that tag. If I add a tag manually it "highlights" it if I do something wrong so it makes it harder to mess something up. Along with a spell checker and other features it's well worth using a good HTML program even if you use it in text mode. Besides, text mode is much easier to master than WYSIWYG mode if you already know some HTML, and still gives you complete control over what goes where. Hello Ann, The blacksmith pages are really nice. So far as hand coding html goes. It's my preference. Although it is very labor intensive, you have full control of what code goes onto the page. Hi Ann, > I don't want to have to do everything myself in html code.... is there > another way? There are other ways - you can have your genealogy program generate pages for you, you can use a WYSIWYG program... there's probably others which I can't think of right now. Most genealogy programs I've seen have web-page generation capabilities. But you may not find it adequate for your needs. WYSIWYG means "what you see is what you get" and it's kind of like using a word processor to put text and words where you want them, and the program builds the HTML code in the background. Don't use your word processor, though - they do a terrible job of it. I'm using FrontPage, because my computer had it when I wanted to start working with web pages. There are free programs around - I think I've seen Komposer recommended here, or others will be along soon with their suggestions. To clarify pretty_flowers.htm & pretty%20flowers.htm are seen as prettyflowers.htm by the search engine whilst pretty-flowers.htm is seen as pretty-flowers.htm making it two keywords plus a phrase. Read more about it from the Google Engineer Matt Cutts. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/dashes-vs-underscores/ of course one can always do one's own testing to confirm <smiles> This is just one aspect of seo ..... but every aspect makes up the whole. If your page is (not site) but the page you are working on or interested in ... is indexed ... except for having a space do not change the nam, if it has a space and is indexed change it, if you must then use a 301 redirect ....if you cannot then wipe the page of content and leave a link to the new page with some good keyword anchor text. Ralph misspoke when he (I) wrote "File names don't matter much.." That was too broad; it would have been better to say that using or not using hyphens & underscores as separators in a file name doesn't matter much. The identifier of a file is not part of the file's content; it isn't indexed by search engines in the same way text is, but it needs to be handled by servers. There are, of course, good and bad practices in naming files to be published on the Web. Some characters are forbidden; they have special meanings on the server and will cause problems. Other characters, while legal, should be avoided. It's best to stay with the 26 letters of the alphabet, the 10 numeric digits plus underscores (_) and hyphens (-). For 12-character file names, this gives you more than 9 x 10^18 (nine quintillion) possible names. Among the bad practices pointed out is using spaces in file names. Spaces are "legal" in the Windows Operating System, but not in the Unix-based OS of most servers; they get replaced by "%20%", which uses more characters and makes the name less human-readable. I apologize for subjecting the list to an argument with myself, but I didn't want to let the misconception stand. -rt_/)

Files names should only be changed if they have a space like so pretty%20flowers.htm and you should use dashes not underscores like so pretty-flowers.com ... of course if you know for a fact your page is NOT indexed... then change the file name.. however its really only a good idea to change a file name if you can then point from the old to the new ... and thats best done on a unix host where you can use a 301 redirect using the meta redirect is not a good idea. For example, one file was named: epkrnmap so the contents aren't easily understood as being 'east_pike_run_township_map' I know my filenames would be longer, but I think changing them now would make it easier for visitors to find the atlas / township maps." A, perhaps, minority opinion: File names don't matter much, so long as they're unique and the webmaster can relate to them. They, especially, don't matter to search engines. The proof of this is the vast number of page file hits consisting of unintelligible letter & number combinations. What does matter to SEs is the content, structure and meta description of the page. (Keywords have gone out of fashion, due to abuses.) File names aren't used in the indexing/searching process. I wouldn't recommend a vast file renaming to improve SE rankings; it's largely wasted effort. -rt_/)
