    3. YES!! I found it! Returned Data #2 lorem ipsum dolor I'll take a look at your code after dinner to see how you did it. I take it I could just use some otherwise blank space to hide my files in that area? Thank you! Now I'll be able to stop those pages from showing up under the Unlinked Files in Reports. 1. [FreeHelp] "Not authorized" as unlinked files
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. In folders of pictures-only, it's recommended to put an "index.htm/l" page in each of those folders so the folder contents can't be accessed (such as when a web visitor finds the folder by accident or erases the end of the URL back to a folder name). Some people put a message like, "You are not authorized to view this folder. Please return to the main site page." (or similar message) Frontpage users know that the program lists all "unlinked files" as well as broken links. Here's my question. All of the "not authorized" pages aren't linked from the site's main index.htm/l page, so those pages get listed in the "unlinked files" in Frontpage. That's not a big deal, unless you have many picture-only folders. Is there a method I could use to list on the main site page one link that would go to one page that would list all of the "unauthorized" pages? Would there be a way to name the link a certain phrase, or make the link itself more invisible or less noticeable to visitors, so visitors would be less likely to click on said link? How could I write "the link" so it doesn't show up as "a link"? Hope I've made sense in what I'm asking. My goal is simply to get those pages linked so Frontpage won't keep reporting them as being "unlinked pages". Also, I have a follow META on those "unauthorized" pages. Should I change those to nofollow nocache etc? And, do the "unauthorized" pages need to have my left-side site navigation, top banner include, and bottom include left as they are on all pages--- OR, should I strip the page down to just having a link back to the main site index page?? I try to respond to "only" the part someone has asked about because (IMO) additional comments can get overwhelming for the person who asked about something else. But I hope you won't mind me making one off-the-subject comment. At the top of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~docex/ you have this: If you have any of the surnames (a list of surnames given but removed for this email) or similar surnames in your family, we might be related. To find out, follow *this link *<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~docex/gedcoms.shtml>to view my direct ancestors and *this link *<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~docex/research.shtml>to view my gedcoms. If you don't see your ancestor listed, contact me. (With "this link" as a hyperlink for each.) My comment: If you google phrases like "this link", "click this link", or "follow this link", you'll see thousands of entries. Even the government's NASA-TV page has 2 "follow this link" items which show under #1 ONLY because it's NASA. I believe sentences with links can be written descriptively so that every_word_counts for Google search. For example, on your sentences, I'd change them to: If you have any of the surnames (a list of surnames given but removed for this email) or similar surnames in your family, we might be related. To find out,(make link--> view my direct ancestors (<--end of that link) and (begin link----->) view my gedcoms (<--end that link). If you don't see your ancestor listed, contact me. Or, an even better way for that second sentence might be: To find out,(make link--> view Lorri Laskey's direct ancestors (<--end of that link) and (begin link----->) view Lorri Laskey's gedcoms (<--end that link). Or, maybe you could use a primary ancestor's name. Let's say the primary ancestor is Michael Laskey 1781-1840. To find out,(make link--> view descendants of Michael Laskey 1781-1840 (<--end of that link) and (begin link----->) view Laskey gedcoms (<--end that link). Every word on a webpage and every link is valuable typing. A few changes in writing sentences can improve Google's results (not necessarily ranking but search effectiveness and clarity). Internet users would be more likely to search for 'the primary ancestor's name' rather than search for "this link". If they heard that a lady named Lorri Laskey had information on a website, they'd use your name as a search term. If users find "About 89,900,000 results" for the search term "this link", they likely wouldn't click any of the results. Judy

    3. Judy, You make good points. I am well aware of the value of relevant, well written content for improved seo. I have been lazy, concentrating on other aspects of web development to the neglect of seo. This is a goal of mine to learn more about seo and make that a regular part of website maintenance. I'll certainly make note of your ideas and incorporate them into my site. I know "about" seo from light tutorials but have not learned the "deeper" lessons. You know more about this than me, as evidenced from your comments. Thanks for sharing your insight. Lorrie On 01/17/11 12:02, J.A. 3. Ian, The second link in my last post was to a second page with another "hover show". Basically the same but less code and less problematic. Good to know that it, too, works in FF. The numbers are gone from the first "hover show" on my home page. Feedback persuaded me to use more descriptions tab names, less confusion. Thanks, all. 3. I rechecked it in FF after this email and it is working for me. Hmmm.....I wonder what the problem could be. I know it still needs work. It does not work in IE6 from my testing but not sure about later versions. I now realize, from respondent feedback, that I named it incorrectly which caused a lot of confusion. It is not a "slide show" but a "hover show". To view the next window of text, the tabs must be hovered with the mouse. If this still does not work for anyone, I would appreciate an email with the details. I also added a second, less complicated and problematic "hover show" to another page. If anyone is interested in seeing it, the link follows. This is powered by html and css, no scripting. Feedback is always appreciated. Thanks for all of the help. link to second hover show <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Edocex/images.shtml> Lorrie On 01/17/11 10:51, anne-ology wrote: > Just viewed with FireFox - > nothing moves; > what appears to be links, don't open; > when placing the mouse over images, nothing; > > Maybe you're working on this now - hope so. > > From the front, it looks as if you'll eventually have a good site for > genealogists to peruse, > > > > On Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 2:00 AM,<freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com>wrote: > > >> Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2011 00:21:17 -0600 >> From: Lorrie Laskey<lrmalcom@bellsouth.net> >> Subject: [FreeHelp] website functionality help please >> To: Freepages<Freepages-Help-L@rootsweb.com> >> Message-ID:<4D328E5D.8050104@bellsouth.net> >> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed >> >> List, >> >> Would someone please visit my site and test the slide show? 3. Pat, The 1. 2 and 3 tabs have been changed to more descriptive names thanks to feedback from others. Good to know it is now mostly behaving. I am still fine tuning as I get more responses. Thanks for your feedback it is invaluable. There is no way that I can duplicate all of the many, many desktop environments in use. Thanks again.
