Barry, I understand. I guess I am not asking the question correctly because I am not getting an answer. I'll try again. :-) Is there only one set of these directories such as misc, computers, history, military and such and they are used by all accounts? Or does each account, my docex account, have their own set of these very same directories? I am not quite understanding how an account holder can choose to upload an web page, say index.html, to a directory outside of their account without some connection to that account holder's account? Pamela, I don't understand your exact concern but to clarify: 1. "freepages" allows only ONE "account" (~youraccount) 2. "freepages" has, I think, 9 "categories" -- each acts as a separate "website" BUT ALSO (see #3) 3. You can cross-link all of the category websites into 1 bigger "website" 4. If you use the "miscellaneous" (misc) category, your URL will be shorter and "misc" can act as the "main page" for all the category websites. For example, I use the categories of family, genealogy, school-alumni, religions, and misc. Others on this List told me I could use the "misc" site to make it easier for visitors because "misc" has the shorter URL. See http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~florian/ As you see, on that page I give the URLs for each freepages category that I use (plus one account I have on the "rootsweb" server). As well as giving links to all my "sites", I also USE the misc website for a different type of content. So in effect, I have 5 "webs" in freepages by using the different "categories" they offer. I don't remember all the other ones, but 2 others off the top of my head are "nostalgia" and "military". You can make a pretty big overall "site" just using the freepages "categories" offered in each person's (one-only) account. So you might want to check it out a bit more before feeling disappointed or frustrated about the account name you requested. NOTE: Limit one FREEPAGES account per user. You may NOT use a FREEPAGES account for file storage. Do NOT upload MP3, zip, mpg, avi, ram files, etc. as your account will be closed. PLEASE NOTE: Your account name will become part of your URL, as in http://freepages.communityname.rootsweb.com/~acctname/. Account name must be at least 4 characters long and must consist only of lower case letters and numbers, but may not begin with a number. No spaces or characters (such as - _ / . ') are allowed. Select your account name carefully as names of accounts can NOT be changed and you may not close an account and open a new one. When I first started my account, it was for genealogy. I later moved it to paid hosting. While I still had the freepages account, the focus of the site changed. So gearyfamily which worked when I started was changed to reflect genealogy computer tips for rootsweb users. Which is why users are told to consider carefully the name they choose. Pat G.
Thanks to Barry and all for the tips about creating the shortest url. I have a simple index page in my genealogy folder that links all my content. I just opened that in notepad and converted the relative links to absolute ones and uploaded that and my include file to the misc folder. Now I can use a really short url to drop visitors into my site. Rose Lee Wall

Barry and all, I never quite understood the structure of the various rw directories available to account holders nor how to use them. They are likely not in the business to be selling but rather luring you into clicking onto their links. Doing so serves a purpose for them either for rankings or worse, searching for targets for malware and viruses. It's good to remember there is usually a motive for everything you find on the Internet, even if it looks to be a mistake. This is my two cents. You may be right that their site was hijacked. BUT the issue remains that malicious bots are 'grabbing' website URLs to put on Link Farms. >From my research today, apparently the nasty-bots can be stopped or slowed down at the server / root level. I was reading about it here: http://en.linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_stop_automated_spam-bots_using_.htaccess Would Randy consider writing a htaccess file for the "root" that allows the good bots such as for indexing, while disallowing the bad harvesting bots? This problem started around Feb 4th (esp on the "family" website). So I bet other freepages webmasters will also be affected at some point. If I wasn't using Google Webmaster Tools to see any Crawl Errors, I never would have known. From what I read, Google can penalize both the "Link Farm" as well as the webs that get linked to the farm. :-/ I don't like Link Farms... I also am annoyed that the links are broken as well. LOL -- I can't fix em! I did call the church headquaters. As well, several of these "Farms" are on servers at the "Host Gator" webhosting company. So I called Host Gator too for what they labeled as "malicious activity" by the websites. Most of the rest of the websites are from Canada or India. :-( Judy On Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 10:33 AM, Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> wrote: > ============= > > Looks to me like their site has been hacked if I use the site: > islandparkchurch.org > and the listing of sites returned as an example. > > May be wrong but those are my thoughts. > > pat > -- -- WASHINGTON COUNTY PA WEBSITES::: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~florian/ Coordinator of the Washington County PAGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawashin/

Not sure I'm using the right words to explain this... I use Google Webmaster Tools. One area it shows are Crawl Errors. The table/list gives the link URL of my page, then a number for how many pages show that URL as a crawl error. This tool is supposed to give a webmaster an easy to view list of errors, so the webmaster can fix the error. Today, none of the crawl errors are internal errors (i.e. on my site). Instead, an outside site created an error by PARTLY using some of my content PLUS the link URL but with gibberish added so that the URL to MY content/page is broken. It looks like it's deliberately broken, or the party doesn't know how to write a webpage. Here is an example: http://islandparkchurch.org/pjr-hot-topic-boy.html More than half-way down that page is a photo of 2 boys stuck randomly into an unrelated sentence. Hovering over the picture, you get http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/camps/camp_boys-friends_cr.jpg%22%20width=%2236%22%20height=%2250%22%20alt=%22image%22/%3E%3C/a%3E%3Ca%20href=%22/m/imgres?q=hot+topic+boy Other sites doing this are hosting companies (small ones), I guess as an attempt to increase their ranking?? I called the church one and told them because the "boy" links on their page get kinda rauchy. But, how do I deal with the rest of them? Or, do I let it go? Are the other websites and the broken links they made hurting my website in Google's eyes?
