    3. Kim, I deleted your first message and am responding from memory.. As Pat stated, check the path of the includes in the "surnames" page. Since surnames is in a surnames folder, it's path will probably have a ../ before it to indicate that it is down one level in the root directory. 1. [FreeHelp] Code problem seeking an answer
    2. Peter
    3. Good morning, I wonder if anyone can help ? My site is freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rawbone and have a 'rollover' text coding problem! On the 'intro' page I have various email addresses that perform correctly i.e. when the mouse is hovered over some hyperlinks, the text changes but lower down, it doesn't. The burning question is Why? I'm flummoxed and would appreciate any ideas. To assist, the page was created in MS Frontpage 2002 and I could send a portion of code if that helps. -- /Cheers/ /Peter/

    3. This has been an interesting thread to read! I had no idea the misc was the "root" folder in RW. I started building my site in the genealogy folder, lol. My other site that I self host use a public html folder in that goes my index and main program then, build sub dir off that. I wonder why they didn't just name the misc folder root or something and have the other paths off that. lol The way it's laid out now it looks like misc is just another subfolder. I guess one could build their full site in the misc folder as well. Make your own family sub dir's off that. What I was planning to do with my site was the index, includes and other needed things in the root folder. Then making sub dir for other topics, different sir names etc. An example might be for the surname Anderson. I would want a subfolder named Anderson and subfolders under that for military, bios, photos etc. things that are just for that family. Then similar for each surname. I would not want a general military folder to then split up with folders for each surname. That would confuse me to no end, I want all surname info in one area. lol But I could see using the RW military folder for general military war topics not directly pertaining to a person in my family. Sorry if I'm rambling 3 hours sleep, I'm scatter brained today. lol Kim ----- No virus found in this message. 3. Lorrie, Ah! The penny has dropped. I assume your account is freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~docex. You are entitled to use any of the other communities that you find listed if you direct your FTP at users.freepages.rootsweb.com Or do we need to double translate to and from Swahili?? :-) Barry On 17/02/2011 10:33 a.m., Lorrie Laskey wrote: > Barry, > > I understand. 3. Lorrie, Lets put it another way. Your account is really "rootsweb.com/freepages/community/accountname/sub-directories etc.." So when you use freepages.rootsweb.com (a sub domain of rootsweb), the next level is the "community" and that is effectively a sub domain of freepages. Its at this point the the individual accounts are created. Am I explaining it well? I think probably not, and maybe a graphic in a webpage might be the answer. There may already be one out there. Pat Asher might be able to help. Barry On 17/02/2011 10:18 a.m., Lorrie Laskey wrote: > Barry, > > I understand. I guess I am not asking the question correctly because I > am not getting an answer. 3. Ooops, I misunderstood your question. You want to know how to get your website to display a "page" when it opens http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/ What you did not do was start with a page called "index.htm" OR "index.html" The URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/ is the same as http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/index.htm -- IF you had an "index" page When you do not do an "index.htm(l)" page, visitors see every file inside your website. They see a directory tree. To correct this, make a New Page, and name it "index.htm" OR "index.html" This page must NOT be in a folder. It must be "freely" placed in the "genealogy" folder (on your computer). Use the "index.htm" OR "index.html" as a "home page"... the first page visitors will see. I tried to look in your Directory Tree for what you called your "first" page but the page I picked was huge and is still loading :-( On your "index.htm" OR "index.html" page, place navigation links to main areas of your site. Maybe write a paragraph or two about the site. Make sure in the HEAD coding to use a TITLE tag, Meta Decription, Meta Keywords. Whatever "name" you put in the TITLE tag should be the same H1 text used "on" your webpage. For example: Kincaide Family History and Genealogy from New York You should use one consistent "name" for your entire website-- and put that on every page. BUT ALSO, use a descriptive H1 page title "on" the page. Like put an H1 tag around your title "Kincaid DNA Vetting and Lineage Post Central" that you used on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/kincaid%20vetting%20and%20lineage%20post%20central.htm NOTE: to get rid of the "%20" in your URLs, use a hyphen-between-each-word-in-every-file-name.html After you write paragraphs on your "index.htm" OR "index.html" and have site-wide navigation listed, start Labeling by type of files. Then make links from those labels, like: Kincaide Census Pages (link it to a "index.htm" OR "index.html" in the folder for Census) Julie Kincaide Recipes (link it) John Kincaide Biography (link it) Miscellaneous Kincaide Family Records (link it) Make a folder for each. Move your pages into folders according to type (and area of your website). A "index.htm" OR "index.html" page in each folder acts as a "front door" to that folder. You link all the folder's "index.htm" OR "index.html" pages back to the main site's "index.htm" OR "index.html" So if I go to your main site's index, I can then go to your census index.html page.
