List, This next message might help you understand why I am having trouble understanding much about the accounts. I have had problems with my logins for rw accounts some time, as well as incorrect info in my rw account. I remember trying to merge accounts when wc was making changes to these accounts some time ago and had problem then. I'll explain. Apparently the same login form is used for both my personal rw account and my wc account. Very confusing. If I login from here, the first window I see is the "tree adminstration" page that lists all of my gedcoms and where I can manage them. https://myaccount.rootsweb.com/signin If I login from the homepage of rootsweb by selecting, my account, the very same login box appears, url follows, but a page to my rootsweb account opens from where I cannot access my wc gedcoms. Additionally, some of the info in that window is wrong. And, I have tried several times to remove some of the mailing lists listed by choosing "unsubscribe" but they remain listed and I only get error messages from the lists because I am not subscribed. Additionally, the category "Freepages Accounts" lists a broken link to a very old website that has not existed for years. https://myaccount.rootsweb.com/signin?kurl=http:%2F%2Fwc%2Erootsweb%2Ecom%2Fcgi%2Dbin%2Fwcus The urls to login are different but very similar but the page info is slightly different. Is this correct? There seems to be no way to access the two from one login. Is this correct? Lorrie
I guess I did not state my question very well. I do not create new accounts each time I upload. I just asked for an explanation for the difference between the two terms. You will need to go into each tree you want to delete to delete it. On the tree you want to keep, read your management page well. I have my complete databases {mine, son's, and husbands} uploaded, but the public only gets to see what I want them to see. To update I upload a replacement Gedcom. -----Original Message----- From: Lorrie Laskey Sent: Friday, February 18, 2011 4:17 PM Cc: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] world connect Pat, I don't understand the difference. Hi Rose, Yes you can make events private in RM as well. It doesn't look like you can select what facts not to print from the reports menu. So I would have to go to every person each time to change the event settings. Unless I don't use private facts for anthing else, that might work. I do use private notes, but I've never had a need to use private facts yet. I eventually want to make a book for my children and don't want it cluttered with html codes. :-) I also have family who are older and do not use computers, so I need to be able to print files to share with them. I was just looking at your site, your using the Legacy pedagree style I really like. I wish RM had a style that was like that! I might switch to exporting my gedcom into Legacy and generating my pages from that. I was playing with it localy and it works well. Just an extra step to take. Hi Kim, How about you change the width of your banner? You have it in your css as width: 1000px; Try taking it out and have the height set at around height: 170px; Best wishes, Jill http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glamorgan/

So true Pat what works for one isn't necessary right for another. I have 3 genealogy programs. RM is the best fit for how I like to enter data. But there are a few options that I like the other two programs for. I was wondering when you enter links into your notes to display images or other content. How do you not get the same html formatting not to show in a text report? Unless you keep two databases one for online work and one for text reports? I know RootsMagic doesn't pars urls you put in notes to links. But I *think* you can use html in the notes. I haven't done this because I don't know how to keep the html code from cluttering up text reports. I could mark the coding with { } to make them private, but then I can't use it for real private notes. So that wont work well. Now one nice thing about Legacy's web generator is it DOES put the images attached to your notes on the page. But only the first image you have marked. So if you have a marriage certificate that has two sides of info it will only display 1 of the images. But you could add html to the notes to display them. But again it would clutter your text print outs. Legacy also doesn't make css styled pages they are html unless you buy an add on. Not expensive I just can't afford anything extra right now. I've really enjoyed reading how other set up there sites and what they use to make them! Kim, in Legacy you have the option of making events private. I have my html code in the location field of custom events. When I generate reports, I make those 4 events private. I don't know if you can selectively make events private in RM but you could explore that option. This was written quite some time ago but it bears repeating. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/creating-site-navigation.htm Why is it important to provide consistent navigation with your website? Not everyone who visits your site is going to enter through your front door or Home Page. If they enter at any one of the pages within your site, are they going to be able to find their way around? This is especially true if you have a large site with many, many sections and pages. Taking the time when you first start with your site will save you hours of work later on. Think about the navigation of YOUR site before it gets to big. pat g

Thanks Billie, But I'm afraid that wouldn't work for me. I update my file often so I would need to restyle every page by hand each time if I did it that way. I can live with the text wrapping around the left menu on the genealogy pages. But I would like to figure out how to get the divs set right... Or I could just take the left menu off the RM pages. Not sure yet lol. When I discovered my GGGGrandfather died in Hunnewell Kansas all I had to do was edit one line on a page and upload that page. No need to generate a whole new GEDcom. Since the site was created I've probably added fifteen or twenty new pages. Changes are simple and fast. The thing is, on World Connect you can't do this with a gedcom: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~billie0w/data/dat35.htm#1 GEDcom's can't carry all the information. The genealogy software I use now generates great web pages but they are not editable so every time I wanted to make a change it would be a completely new website that had to be uploaded. -- "A good moral character is the first essential in a man."
