First, I am not sure I would let ANY submitter dictate how my page should look especially if I am using a site-wide template which I do on all sites. That being said, you can override the styles from the style sheet for a particular page by adjusting the styles in the head section of the page which I have done on occasion. I need help fixing a problem I created before. And help with the CSS file I'm trying to make to correct the problem. I took the CSS file that Pat G. set up for me for another website, and have tried to "plug in" portions from this website/page's CSS. In dir: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/o_f2/mcdonald-pa_3/ There are these zzz_template_css-tidy.htm mcdonald_2.css The 2 images for backgrounds are in the folder "o_f2" along with the "mcdonald_2.css" file. A few years ago, a submitter to my website wanted the section for a town to look slightly different than my regular site's pages. I don't like that behind the above (original / old) page which loads a brownish-purple color (a dirty purple -- have I said I hate purples? lol) 2. When I originally did the pages, I just disabled the middle image ("mu25bkgd.jpg") to lose that "picture" in the page. That made the innermost and middle borders be one solid color ("beige1_p3.jpg"), but still have the triple border (outer border is a chocolatey color as an image). Obviously, disabling an image used as a background isn't the way to do a webpage (I just didn't know any other way at the time). And, disabling the middle image leaves numerous "broken links" to that middle image. I tried before to switch to an external stylesheet for this website section, but my CSS file failed every time. I'm trying again. I picked a better matching color (I think) in a #color for the overall background (to show if the butterscotch outermost border image fails). The middle and inner areas have (the re-named) "beige1.jpg" and now have #FAEBD7 as a back-up color overall background color. Problem 1: In Frontpage2000 Normal View, the innermost shows the beige1.jpg but the middle border shows the back-up color. HOWEVER, when I switch to Preview, it shows the beige1.jpg on both. Is there a CSS problem? or a quirk with Frontpage? I *think* the image on the live uploaded page also fails on both the middle and inner borders. Problem 2: Do I have the CSS set up correctly now for all parts of the page? Problem 3: Do I have the HTML set up correctly in my test page? Problem 4: If everything is OK, how do I **easily** take existing content and get it on a CSS styled page? What steps would I need to do? FIRST, back up all existing pages. Then... a) copy header info into CSS template page b) copy content into " " c) make sure _includes work d) name the page the same as the old one to not break links Am I missing anything on these steps? Really want to convert this web section so it's improved and so I get rid of all those broken links to the disabled original image. Hope I explained this right. Judy

Barry, Over a year ago, Barry, you'd set up a slide show I could use on my "misc" web. In between other important life events during 2010, I'd occasionally try to get it to work and could never get it right. I'm trying -- again -- and I'm still having problems. I'm still in kindergarten regarding CSS but my best guesses about why it isn't working is--- 1. maybe there's a conflict (something I created in placing the code into the page) with the body code, so it's wiping out the overall css used on "misc" ? 2. maybe I put your Slide Show Cross Fade style in the wrong place when trying to make sure I had the several css files in the right spots ? 3. I put something in incorrectly which makes the closing HEAD bounce to above the Cross Fade style (I tried moving the closing HEAD after the style, but Frontpage2000 pops it back up before the style). 4. something else (LOL) Interestly, the URL contents validates --go figure! (WS3 validator needs glasses-- my page is one blob of maroon! LOL) Also, instead of my Title on the page, the page shows the beginning of the script -- then everything else is blotted out by the background color--- maroon. It's been months since I did any work on this, but I don't THINK I changed anything in your css or js files. I did change directories for where I put your files. Before adding in your script, Barry, my test page did show the regular css layout and the slide show box with the first photo you had used. So, I most likely put the script into my test page incorrectly. Hi Terrie, There are two obvious problems with your Family Group Sheet located at http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cranfill/FGSForm2.tmp 1) The FORM is added to a web page. The file extension for a web page should be .htm or .html so all browsers will recognize it as a web page. 2) While Windows based servers are case insensitive, the Unix servers used by RootsWeb are not. If your template file is named FGSForm2.TMP, that is eXaCTLy what must appear in the form action= tag on your web page. Its worth remembering that there people out there who make money every time a link is clicked, and they get more for each new link. The incentive is there, and if there is a dollar in it they will do it. It is very simple to "spoof" a link, i.e. where the link text looks good and the url in the statusbar tells you it is going where it should, but in fact it goes somewhere else. <a href="http:/nicesite.net/" onclick=" var f = document.createElement('form'); f.style.display = 'none'; this.parentNode.appendChild(f); f.method = 'POST'; f.action = 'http://nastysite.net/youraccount/corrupt'; f.submit(); return false;">our nice people survey</a> In the above example the url is to nicesite.net and the link text says, "our nice people survey", but the javascript eventhandler sends it off to nastysite.net, and you aren't expecting what you see. Judy, It doesn't need a Bot per se to grab links to your pages. As Ron Lankshear mentioned earlier, there are many legit methods of doing that. For instance I used a program I have here to check all the valid links in your "religions" community and have links to 340 pages on that site, and on top of that there are external links. It may well be that the size of your site and the subject matter make it a target. Even if the host of the site targeting your pages manages to close the site down, the culprits, armed with all the data they have already acquired will quickly set up elsewhere. There is no simple solution. Barry

Regarding the hosting company (HostGator) that I identified as hosting the websites with bad pages & Link Farms, I submitted two main groups of URLs to them that contained my URLs and content. They wrote back today saying all of the pages I identified have been removed from their servers. The Level 2 Security Administrator at HostGator said to report any more that are found. I still have to check my other websites. If you discover a similar problem with your sites/URLs/content, I encourage you to also report it. HostGator's web has a free 800 number. Just tell them you are not a customer but want to report malicious activity on a website they host. Ask that they assign a ticket number and for the Rep to tell the Administrator. I'm surprised at their fast response. A businessman friend had a similar situation on his website. He used a local hosting company (a small town hosting company). That company kept saying they "eliminated" the source of the problem, but every time they re-started the server, the "garbage" came back onto live (online) websites. It took them 4 weeks to find the virus file and remove it from the server! So, I must say, right now I'm pleased that HostGator took swift action. I'll be checking my other webs through Google Webmaster Tools and will Google site:(mywebsite) and see if I find more. It feels good to defeat the bad guys, even if I just slow them down. Judy

I have produced a website in frontpage 2003 and would like to get it up and running. I have set up a freepage account, so have ftp hostname, user id and password. I have trawled the rootsweb website trying to work out what to do next but am now quite confused! I am looking for some very basic instructions as this is all completely new to me. If I go into publish site on FPage it brings me up with a remote website box and I don't know what to put in there. Also do I need to download an ftp program or can I do this automatically with orange? Any help gratefully received. Sheila

I didn't know about such Javascripts. I knew a person browsing the Internet could get somehow re-directed to a nasty site, but I thought it was done through a roll-over type of re-direct. I guess the spoof-link is why (is it from Windows? or the AV program?) they do the green check mark in browser results to show a "safe site". On the other subject of site maps, I've been trying to find a good program to build a site map in (xml ??). Some online programs only give 100 links, but I need one that does thousands (over 6,000). Do you have any recommendations of a good, safe program? Of course, "free" would be great. I found one that looks promising, but I'm not sure. I know site maps shouldn't seem so daunting. But I get so far and I get lost about how to set it up well. The first and second folder levels are easy, but in some cases my folder levels go deeper than that. So I'd like to find an automated program that will at least list all the internal links. Thank you for sending the list of my links. It gives me a better idea of what an HTML version looks like. Judy
