    3. Judy, A quick check of some of the msoclip1/01/clip_image001.jpg files on the web, indicates that most are in the the MSWORD TEMP directory, and often the image is .gif or .png. It appears that the filename was allocated by the program on a temporary basis, and that name will have been used for multiple images at some time or another. Just get rid of it. Barry

I am an experienced genealogy researcher, know my way around the Internet and the computer pretty well...BUT...I have HTML anxiety. Several years ago, I started working on a webpage through Rootsweb freepages, but dropped the project till now. When I recently tried to create another one, I was told I already had one and was sent the user name and password to access it. However, I have no idea where to go on Rootsweb to try to open it up and resume work on it. Or what to do once I get there. I am really just looking for the most basic of webpages, no bells, whistles, music, animated graphics, or any of that stuff. I just want a simple page with the surnames I am researching, a little brief info on each one. And a link to my gedcom file I created with Family Tree Maker. I want the webpage to come up on Google or other search engines, if someone does a search on one of my surnames. Really, I am just looking to make some genealogy connections here to further my research, not bedazzle anyone with an eyecatching website. :) I welcome any suggestions, and thank you in advance for your help! 1. [FreeHelp] Question about MS Word generated files and a URL containing: msoclip1/01/clip_image001.jpg
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. I'm cleaning up my first websites. I found one webpage/file I made very early when I started my genealogy website that I had made with MS Word (before I got the word that I shouldn't use MS word ;-) These original pages were made in 2005-06, meaning, about 3 computers ago. I thought I converted all the MS Word Code but obviously I didn't find one item. I found a page with a "link" that looks like it went to my computer (instead of to a real page). I can't find anything on my computer or backup image-files with the image's filename. The URL ends with msoclip1/01/clip_image001.jpg When I looked on the Internet to find out what "msoclip" is, I found a lot of websites with this same file name and same pathway, except their pathways go to their computers. Could msoclip1/01/clip_image001.jpg be a file that MS Word generates when some image is inserted into a Word.doc file? Since this *exact* file pathway is on multiple websites on the Internet, it seems so. If so, I can just delete the reference to it because I already separated images from my Word.doc files and re-named the images long ago. If it is not referencing an image that was once upon a time put in an MS Word file, then what does msoclip1/01/clip_image001.jpg refer to? Judy

You actually need to have a Google account to access the page where Lorrie would like users input. 3. Its not often that I have had much good to say about the IE stable of browsers, but I can recommend IE9. This new version which has finally been released today, is a completely redesigned browser, which is fast, along with providing the latest in CSS3 features and fully implementing CSS2. The lousey JavaScript engine of IE8, has been gutted, then completely rebuilt using machine code, and of course now does the things that IE8 failed badly at. If you have a Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7, then the new browser can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/IE9 The downside is; MS have in their corporate wisdom made the new browser incompatible with Windows XP and earlier. In that sense, the choice was theirs to do, as they still enjoy the lions share when it comes to the number of Operating Systems sold. Barry

    3. Hi, Others will also answer you with more detailed help but I thought I'd send a quick note back. Freepages has "communities" (you can see them in File Manager aka File Man). You can choose which community you wish to use. Each "community" is a "website" -- all under your 1 account name. Each "website" (community) MUST have the very FIRST page named as the filename : index.htm OR index.html If you use *any* other name for the file for that first page, you cannot get to your website. (You could, but you'd need that exact name at the end.) When I clicked the link you provided I didn't pay attention to the words in the URL and of course, I got page not found. But I've realized you left off the "freepages" part. Your site is: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bereskin/ (note the dots between the words) Ancestry has re-directs set up so this URL also works (without the word ancestry in it) http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~bereskin/ The "index" file is assumed (as long as it is uploaded), so http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bereskin/ is the same as http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bereskin//index.htm (or html, depending on which you use) Same with the shorter URL without ancestry in it. Other people can discuss the methods you're using to do a webpage. There are easier ways to write a page than what you are doing. The "loop" you are getting back to the log-in screen may be a rootsweb issue. I am trying to set the widths on an elastic website using min and max-width. I don't want a fully elastic site because I need to place inner divs and I need to calculate their widths within a reasonable range say 475px - 600px. I need a site to be 950px - 1200px width. Initially I had it set at 80% but I could not calculate the inner div widths since the page widths could range from quite small on a very small monitor to very large on a modern very large monitor. I found out that I need to limit the width to keep the page from becoming excessively small or large, not very attractive and hard to create a layout. Simple setting min-width and max-width does not work for Firefox or Opera and I know IE < 7 does not support this at all. I have found that simply setting the width for < ie 7 should work. The following css is what I have tried, per W3C schools and other sites, and what does work. I just don't know why it does work. I am trying to understand when 80% width is used within 950px - 1200px width spec range. Non-Working CSS .container { min-width: 950px; max-width: 1200px; margin: 0 auto; } Working CSS .container { min-width: 950px; max-width: 1200px; width: 80%; margin: 0 auto; } Any other tips would be appreciated. 3. Many Thanks for that list Pat I read around and tried some suggestions like Trebuchet and Baskerville but CSStool had never heard of them anyhow I am just going font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif, serif; I like Tahoma on my machine and without it san-serif is not bad I suppose I don't need serif but I've left it as a reminder I just want to be fairly vanilla - I don't think I need any fancy fonts Thanks to all for the explanations Ron Lankshear -Sydney NSW (from London-Shepherds Bush/Chiswick) try my links http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lankshear/ On 2011-03-01 11:01 PM, Pat Geary wrote: > A few more resources: > > http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/007/fonts > > http://www.w3schools.com/CSS/pr_font_font-family.asp > > http://www.devlounge.net/design/better-font-families-in-css > > http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/09/22/complete-guide-to-css-font-stacks/ >
