RE: "I've run into a problem with my template but I'm not sure what I messed up. http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/the-rockdoctor /test-left-align.html I used the CSS from my "misc" page, changed the colors, and tried to enter content. This CSS is named rd.css" I think the primary problem isn't in the CSS; it's an unclosed <.center> tag within your search class div in the page HTML. (BTW, the search class isn't in the CSS file.) So remove the <.center> tag from the HTML and either: 1. Change the div tag to <.div align=center> OR 2. Add at least this much to the CSS file: .search { text-align: center; /* centers text */ } input.search { position: relative left: ??%; /* positions input box */ } img.search { position: relative left: ??%; /* positions image */ } Other comments: 1. Check CSS & HTML files to see that every class & ID in HTML is matched with corresponding .class or #id in CSS; non-matches don't work. Its OK for HTML not to call styles in CSS, but vice-versa isn't OK. 2. Divs without properties or styling applied don't do much but complicate the HTML. They just make it harder to see what's open. 3. In rd.css -- body { font: 1em Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: #330000; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; color: #330000; /* Text color set to same as background */ /* Good place for text-align: left; will be over-ridden with more specific CSS rules */ } -rt_/)

I've run into a problem with my template but I'm not sure what I messed up. http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/the-rockdoctor/test-left-align.html I used the CSS from my "misc" page, changed the colors, and tried to enter content. This CSS is named rd.css If I recall correctly (?), Pat G. had said if I used p align="left" for content (and because it would appear before every line) that I would defeat the purpose of having CSS. So I used just <..p> without the dots and at the end of each paragraph I used </...p> without the dots. The result is everything from the on-page title inside the innermost area next to the navigation area being centered. Also not shown on this page but on some other pages, the content box on the right (middle of pagge) is carrying over the H1 font size from above the box area - where it has Test Sub Test Why is it doing that? My nav is in an _include so that file is set to left align, although without the nav _include inserted on this test page, the word "test" is centered in the left nav area on the page. I'm wondering if the problem might be missing divs? (just a guess, I'm not sure if my guess is right). I'm not real sure where to inseert div though -- where do the div and /div codes go? I tried inserting one div after the content ID and the page text then left aligned BUT then w3 validator complained so I'm wondering if my placement was wrong. Any ideas about what I did wrong? I'd like to fix this correctly. Btw, two years ago I got only a few correct on the 20-CSS questions at w3 schools. I took that testagain yesterday and got 17/20 right. I've learned *some* I guess. Thanks to everyone who sent me names of programs to do watermarks. I tried each and found I liked the one that Shani suggested off-list called PMNet Watermarkv2 from http://www.pmnet.info/watermark/ This program can put the marking 'all over' in the background and was easy to follow the step by step instructions on their webpage. I don't think it does diagonal markings but the horizontal ones look great. Thanks for the tip. Judy On Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 9:59 PM, J.A. Judy, There are simple means now available for watermarking images for html pages, and they do not rely on graphics/photo-imaging software. To make the watermark, you will need a modern browser, e.g. current versions of Firefox, Chrome, opera or Safari will do. To reuse the image, you will need a freeware program or stand-alone utility with a cropable screen capture function. 1.. Create a simple HTML page. 2.. Create a div with the same dimensions as your image. 3.. Place the image as a background-image in the div. 4.. Select a font, size and color to use for making the watermark. 5.. Generate the required text and absolutely position it (as many times as you want). 6.. Use CSS "opacity : xx;" (xx= 0 - 1, eg. 0.5) to adjust the visibility of the watermark. 7.. Use CSS "transform : rotate(45deg); or any other angle for orientation. 8.. Screen capture, crop the image and save. Barry

Hi Judy, > Second, a University professor gave me permission to use 2 of his images. But with the explicit instruction that I should add a watermark identifying the images as his. I don't know how to add a watermark. Google's Picasa will add a watermark to a picture. It's also a good program for sharing pictures online (web albums), if you choose to use it that way. Irfanview will add text to a picture, and this is what I like to use to add a copyright notice to photos that I share with others in Google Picasa Web Albums (as mentioned in the previous paragraph). Examples: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_USxIcy_DjEiYb8Zms_Nr3Wm6HwtmfqiOoiA5bBwpsI?feat=directlink (that happens to be me in the blue, right where my name is imprinted) and https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/CLHj3oynT42Qk92c4p7HW8LTSFJBb37Jz5BLzcCopo4?feat=directlink (I'm not in this one). Both photos have the text added with Irfanview, and are in albums I've shared with others using Google Picasa Web Albums. Both programs are free to download and use. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy
Judy asked "First, I still need someone who knows how to take an existing button and change it to other buttons. The buttons I have are black with metallic-gray letters. Each has one word. I do not know how to remove the type and enter a different word on each button." Judy, you're moving from the world of web-page editing to the world of graphics editing -- very different software. There are, basically, two kinds of these programs: (1) Raster (e.g., bit-map, GIF, JPEG, etc.) and (2) Vector (i.e., "drawing" program -- e.g., AI, EPS, WPG, etc.). A raster file is a pixel-by-pixel representation of an image and the type used on the Web. If I recall correctly, Microsoft Paint, a very basic raster editor, used to be bundled with Windows. There are also some free alternatives like Wendy mentioned. A vector picture is defined by lines, curves, areas, text, etc. Compared to raster images, vector images have small file sizes and are "scalable" without loss of quality. (Quality is limited only by the effort & skill the artist pus into the image.) Any decent drawing program should permit saving the file in a raster-image format. It should also be able to "trace" a raster image, though results are often unsatisfying. All in all, it's probably easier to create new buttons than to edit the ones you have. In a drawing program, buttons are a piece of cake; you have a rectangle (or oval) with a shadow or bevel and some text super-imposed. I tend to use my drawing program to make the image and save as a raster file, then edit size (& some other characteristics with my photo-editing program. You can see some drawings converted to JPEG on this page: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~taylorydna/about-ydna.shtml or here: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~taylorydna/resources/exploratio ns/uncertainty.shtml. -rt_/)

Having lots of SORBS List19 bounces today to freepages-help. :-( First, I still need someone who knows how to take an existing button and change it to other buttons. The buttons I have are black with metallic-gray letters. Each has one word. I do not know how to remove the type and enter a different word on each button. I only need a hanndful re-made to (hopefully,as closely as possible) match the ones I have. I didn't get any replies last time I asked so I'm asking again. Second, a University professor gave me permission to use 2 of his images. But with the explicit instruction that I should add a watermark identifying the images as his. I don't know how to add a watermark. Can anyone give me instructions? Is there an easy way to do it? Can it be diagonal but light so the image can still be seen? Email me off-list for details and images. Thanks in advance. judy

Hello, Yes Barry, I use FrontPage. What html editor do you use ? When I save a file, FrontPage executes the instructions for the last modified date if any, and saves the result in the file. As shown in the next lines. <!--webbot bot="Timestamp" S-Type="EDITED" S-Format="%d %B %Y" startspan -->27 mars 2011<!--webbot bot="Timestamp" i-checksum="18550" endspan --> Enormous disadvantage: you can't put the instructions away in an include file. Someone suggested "mars" wasn't French for "March". This last modified date language issue has been with me for quite a little while and those who care to have a look around http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~noemeetjesland/ will find the names of all the months in French including "mars". In Dutch some government commission keeps changing the spelling; it is "maart" and "april" etc.: no capital letters. That's how it has been for at least 50 years. Lorrie's solution isn't really the solution because -- correct me if I'm mistaken -- it yields the last upload date of the file. It circumvents the real problem. But I will adopt it. (Thank you very much !) and my pages in English and Dutch will have the month of the last modified date in English (for the time being). Of course for my pages in French no changes will be required. For more information on this issue here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~noemeetjesland/meetjesland/lastmodified_2.htmis my test file with more on this matter. Many thanks to all who contributed. All the very best ! DN.

No, you may not. Freepages must be open to all and cannot be password protected. Its against the agreement you signed when you applied for a freepages site, and if its violated (i.e. if you password protect any of your freepages) your account may be deleted. If you want to password protect anything, put it on webpages provided by your IPO or others which you paid for. Integrate them into your freepages site as much as you want.
