    3. I have converted a GEDCOM file to html and uploaded an html file called "surnames". There are other files named "index", "notes" and "people". The surnames list now appear on my sit but when I click on "view" I get a list of surnames. However, when I click on a name I get an error message. "We're sorry. The page you tried to access is not available" Here are the links in question http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi?cache=212276 and then when I click on "surnames" I see this page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/surnames.htm but when I click on the name I get this http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/index/x0000002. htm#BLOCKLEY Thank you David

The instructions for doing that will come with your genealogy program and will differ somewhat from program to program. That is not however, the best way - at least in my opinion - for displaying the information from a GEDCOM file. Using WorldConnect is better for that. You can also download my free ebook on working with RootsWeb FreePages sites. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/rootsweb-freepages-ebook.html pat

    3. If Freepages is not for genealogy why do they have a category named "genealogy_html"??? To give a good answer to the OP's original question- Most genealogy programs have a function to create a website from the database. Some are better at it than others. For example: A program named Gramps creates a very nice site, but it is impossible to edit it after it's created. The only thing you can do is create a whole new site and upload it. PAF creates a nice site that is easy to edit after it's created. Look in categories in your genealogy program under something like "Tools" or "Reports". Might take a bit of looking to find. On the other hand there are some programs that will create web sites directly from a GEDCOM. The one I used when I created my original site years ago was called GED2WWW. The site is simple and easy to edit and add material to with any web page creator software. It appears that GED2WWW is no longer being "supported, but it can still be found if you Google around a bit. There are many others available. Google is your friend. Most of these programs are free to use. On 05/23/2011 07:54 AM, Heidi Utley wrote: > Hi Carol, > > You should upload your ged file (family tree) to: > http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/. 3. Hi Carol, You should upload your ged file (family tree) to: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/. It is the address for World Connect. The instructions are on that site. Your Freepages are not for your family tree, but for creating a website (HTML). Do you have a web editor program such as FrontPage, Dream Weaver, Expression Web or Nvu etc.? If you have such a program you can create your web site and later upload it to your Freepages. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions. 3. I agree with Billie -- too many screen sizes now and no doubt many more to come. I can't imagine anyone looking at my local history website photos with an cell phone (or whatever) so I make them all about 900px wide. Some of the group photos, where size is important, I will show twice -- on the main page it will be 900 px or less wide and then I provide a link to a full-size version which might be two or three screen sizes wide. See[1]http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cdobie/ashbury.htm for an example. Charlie Dobie. At 11:20 AM 5/22/2011, Billie Walsh wrote: --snip-- Neil, your fighting a losing battle. My advice is to set your pages up for a good look at a median size and just let it go. I generally try for a page width of 800 to 900 pixels, if I use a fixed width rather than a percentage, and images in the 600 to 700 range. That seems to give a nice balance. If a picture is too wide to display in full in a monitor with a narrow screen, I will reduce the size of the picture to avoid scrolling. Over the past several years, it was easy to see how a page would display in a monitor with a narrow screen. 3. Contrary to what I wrote in my previous post, the solution I gave will only work in Firefox. This is another case of not all browsers being equal and the difficulties involved in creating one style to fit all. I'll get back a little later with hopefully a global solution. 3. David, The reason the boxes are displaying over the bottom rw banner is because the divs .upperleft, .upperright, .lowerleft and .lowerright are floated and positioned as relative. To fix the problem, add the following to your css file but check it at http://browsershots.org/ to be sure. There may be browser specific issues.
