Recently I had my HD go bad and had to replace it. After everything was back, I found that I have lost the ability to edit in notepad offline. I always used notepad to do the little tweeks on pages, but now I have to load the pages into my editor for even the smallest edit. I have IE7 or 8, can't remember, FF is my default. Neither will allow any editing through notepad. Does anyone know if there is a setting that I have missed? Hi Recently I have started getting warnings about Active Content for any web page that I have created (both recent ones, and those made sometime ago) when viewing them off line on my computer using Internet Explorer. Any suggestions as to why this might be happening as these are pages I know do not include anything that would cause such warnings, and should I be doing something to fix it. The same pages, if viewed online using Internet Explorer, or offline using any other browser programme (eg Firefox) opens without the Active Content warning being given. There have been no changes to my computer, or the programmes stored on it (including no changes to the versions of programmes used) that I am aware off. The programme I use for offline website editing is Microsoft FrontPage 2000. Thanks

Google On-site Search is allowed. It's also helpful. After you've gotten it set up and Google runs its bots, you'll get details about your site through Google Webmaster Tools. For example, let's say you forgot to change a title so two pages are alike in the Header section.... Well, Webmaster Tools will tell you which pages and what is wrong. It will tell you keywords, 404-not found pages, etc. Makes it much easier to fix things. Anyone who accesses your tree meanwhile will be able to see your new or additional data by navigating your tree, even though it does not yet appear in the index :) Pat Asher

" The pound sign (#) in a link points to a specific place within a page. It's especially handy for navigating within a long page, but can also be used from other pages. Naturally, that place has to be named within the destination page and the destination has to exactly match the link. That's done with a tag like this: <.a name="(UNKNOWN_SURNAME)">text Better would be: <.a name="UNKNOWN_SURNAME">text, with the link <.a href="x0000000.htm#UNKNOWN_SURNAME">text. That gets rid of the spaces and parentheses in the link and name. (Usually, buys trouble.) There are some other problems in the quoted link -- e.g., is there a DIRECTORY named "index"? (I'm presuming there's a file "x0000000.htm".) And, if the file with the link is in a sub-directory, you have to first get back to the root directory with the "../" prefix -- repeated however many times you're down in the structure. BTW, on the "please help" thread, I'd like to add my vote to WorldConnect being a better and easier way to post one's family tree. To add new information or correct it, simply use your genealogy program to write a GEDCOM. Then upload that in place of the old in your WC account; it takes just seconds. Carol wrote: "All is want is simple steps on how to convert my ged file to html so I can upload it... I cannot find instructions on how to do this." 1. Open the genealogy software program used to create the GEDCOM (i.e., ged file). 2. Open the program's native-format file or import the GEDCOM. 3. On the program's file menu, there should be an option to publish, save or export as a web page or website. Follow the instructions there. This tends to produce a plain-vanilla website, with pre-determined styling and often bloated code. Nonetheless, you'll get an HTML files or files. One reason you may not be finding these instructions is because they're associated with the particular genealogy software you use; possibly, they're in the program's Help file. If there is no such option in your software, you can't get there with that tool. -rt_/)

Carol, Freepages IS for your family tree if you wish, but you have to make sure all the files are uploaded and that they are referenced properly so the pages can find each other. I checked your links, and it looks to me as though you may not have uploaded all of the files you need. The link references appear to be correct, but the files are either missing or they aren’t where the links are pointing to. Your BLOCKLEY link, for example, points to “index/x0000002.htm#BLOCKLEY” which means it is looking for: 1. your “index” folder 2. a page named “x0000002.htm: in that folder 3. the location named “BLOCKLEY” on that page. Has that page been uploaded to Freepages? I can’t tell from your question whether you actually uploaded the index, notes and people folders or not, and I can’t find those folders on your site. You’ll especially need to upload all those pages (files) that begin with “x000000” into your index folder on Freepages, or your surnames page links won’t work. Same goes for the people and notes folders. I find it easiest to create the whole website on my computer in a separate folder, then upload that entire folder all at once to make sure everything stays in the right place. Hope this helps! If not, please email me privately and I’ll try to help. cuzzinkc@comcast.net (BTW, the email link on your site points to the email address newannandjm@bell.net. Is this correct?) Since I update my four databases fairly often, I find this much easier to work with. Since I also include all documentation in the GEDCOM, any new info is added. I work with my freepages site separatly adding new info, documents, and photos as I find them and have to the time to work with it. This works for me but each of us does what works best for us - no right or wrong way. If on the other hand, you create a new account each time you upload a GEDCOM file, then yes indeed you create a new tree without replacing the old one. Carol, >From your May 22 request, I do not know if you need a search engine for your FreePages web site, or a program to make web pages, or both. As for the search engine, once you have a web site, insert a free search prgram at the beginning of your web site. You can get one here: http://www.picosearch.com/ As for making web pages, and if you are brand new at this, there are three easy ways: Use the one supplied by FreePages, or Use your word processor, such as MS-Word. Word allows you to save in HTM format. But that assumes you have made a word processor type set of info, then saved in HTM format after you save in DOC format. Or Use the one supplied by Ancestry dot Com's web making program. At the top of A dot C's window, there is a Publish tab. Just follow it's instructions. Here is a hint though: Once you make a web page and upload it to Free Pages, then go to Internet Explorer and look at your results on the internet. Often, what you see on your comuter's pages where you built it won't look like the one on the Internet. Those Web page making programs mentioned by Heidi Boos-Utley are a bit harder to learn, but they can give you much more professional web pages, and they cost a few $$s. The one built into A dot C comes with the cost of that subscription; the one supplied by FreePages is free; and the one supplied by MS-Word is part of the cost of that program. Wordperfect also makes web pages, and I am sure other better grade word processors do also. But best results are via the FrontPage, Dream Weaver, Expression Web or Nvu programs. I agree, up to a point. Freepages is not for uploading a GEDCOM. _BUT_, that wasn't the original posters question. The OP wanted to know how to convert a GEDCOM to HTML to upload to Freepages. After a GEDCOM is converted you can go back and add all the information you want to each family/person. Pictures, narratives, whatever [ IF the webpages created are human editable ]. Over the years since I first created my site I have added tons of other information than just names, dates and places. As I learn more about each family member I add it to my site. I'll admit that I know very little about World Connect. It's my understanding that every time you add or change information on your family you have to upload a new GEDCOM. You can't just add new information as you find it. It also seems that I have seen that uploading a new GEDCOM does not necessarily "overwrite" you old information. It creates a different tree. Personally, I would much rather be able to make changes easily and quickly on my genealogy pages as I discover new information. I just recently found out where my G3Grandfather died. Took two seconds to add that to my site and a minute to upload just that one page. I also found a picture of his headstone on Find-A-Grave. That gave me his birth date. Another two seconds to add that and another minute to upload the page again. Your free to do it anyway you wish, just as I am. But to make a statement like "Your Freepages are not for your family tree,....." is just wrong. They put a section in just for that purpose. It's called "genealogy_html". If the OP wish's to convert her GEDCOM to HTML and upload the resulting site to her Freepages account that is completely up to her. No one on this list should tell her how she HAS to do it. My family tree has been on my Rootsweb/Freepages site for something approaching ten years and Rootsweb apparently has no issue with it. I would say it's a perfectly acceptable use of Freepages. Hi David, No one can see your website using the File Manager URL. Instead, your main URL would end with /~yourAccountName/index.htm (or html). So yours is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/ My first observation is you'll need to create a link from the "index" page to each of your individual pages (or to an index page in a folder for another section of your web). The pages surnames, notes, people won't be connected to "your site" if not on the "index.htm(l)" page. As far as the links from the surnames... Where are you wanting each surname to go (to)? Does Blockley have its own HTML page? Or are you taking a visitor right to the data on your World Connect? The reason I ask is with (I think I'm right) a relative URL of index/x0000000.htm# means you are linking TO http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/ But Blockley is not on your index page. Same with the rest. If your intent is to take the visitor to the page inside your World Connect, wouldn't you need an absolute link??? Like http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/whatever/your/wcpageis/blockley I haven't used the # symbol much so I may not be correct. But from a cursory look at the code, such as: (Unknown Surname) I just don't see where index/x0000000.htm is pointing back TO and seems to me is pointing back to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/ which is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/index.htm (or l) Maybe someone else could comment? In the same vein, where do you have your notes, people, and surname pages? To have the pages work for an HTML website, each must have its own URL *and* be linked to the "index" page of your freepages. So you'd have: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/index.htm (orl) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/notes.htm (or l) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/surnames.htm(or l) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people.htm (or l) Let's say you had many "people" pages, so instead of one page, you had a folder named "people" (not very descriptive though). That would be: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people/index.htm(or l) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people/maggie-simpson-blockley.htm(l) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people/george-mcalley-blockley.htm(l) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people/allison-flyer-fillborne.htm(l) Then you would link all the individual files TO (on) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/people/index.htm(or l) Then you'd link the "people" index page's URL to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/ which is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcleodplus/index.htm (or l) When a web visitor lands on the site's main "index" page, they could then click a link to the people folder, a link to a names page, etc. By the way, "We're sorry. The page you tried to access is not available" (a 404 page) usually means: 1. The page is not uploaded. 2. The page is uploaded but the link is written incorrectly so the web is saying, "we can't find it". 3. The page is uploaded but not linked (web doesn't know where to look) 4. The name in the link does not match the file's name. FreePages are not for uploading a gedcom, they are for creating webpages about your families where you can include narratives, images and other information that can be linked to a Gedcom at WorldConnect and serve as an enhancement to the Gedcom. Nothing is more boring then visiting a set of webpages that is nothing more than a list of names and a computer generated report. Using your webpages to personalize your research on your family is what makes your pages compelling and interesting for someone to visit. To give a good answer to the OP's original question- Most genealogy programs have a function to create a website from the database. Some are better at it than others. For example: A program named Gramps creates a very nice site, but it is impossible to edit it after it's created. The only thing you can do is create a whole new site and upload it. PAF creates a nice site that is easy to edit after it's created. Look in categories in your genealogy program under something like "Tools" or "Reports". Might take a bit of looking to find. On the other hand there are some programs that will create web sites directly from a GEDCOM. The one I used when I created my original site years ago was called GED2WWW. The site is simple and easy to edit and add material to with any web page creator software. It appears that GED2WWW is no longer being "supported, but it can still be found if you Google around a bit. There are many others available. Google is your friend. Most of these programs are free to use. On 05/23/2011 07:54 AM, Heidi Utley wrote: > Hi Carol, > > You should upload your ged file (family tree) to: > http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/.
