Your site is listed under "resources" for the surname RAWLS at http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/surnames/r/a/RAWLS/ The listing of surname websites at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~websites/ is updated less often, and it may take several weeks to appear there. You are not properly indexed in the Freepages index of websites because you have named your home page "Index.html" -- with a capital "I". Change the name of the page to use all lower case letters and it should be included in the next update. BTW, the Freepages indexer ignores articles such as "A" and "The". "The Rawls of Dorset" would be indexed under "R". Pat Asher

    3. In your HEAD section you have <title>The Rawls of Dorset</title> So your page is indexed (registered) under the T's for "The". I think all I did was change my HEAD title tag to get mine to be in the Letter Indexing that I wanted. i.e. drop the "The". 3. Re: "Can anyone tell me how to make FP 2003 call the graphics editor of my choice instead of what Microsoft wants." I think the problem is in thinking about what to make FrontPage do, instead of what to make Windows do. Windows ships with pre-set defaults, but you can change them. You can set your Windows Registry to call certain programs based on their file name extension. Let's say you want to use Photoshop to edit JPEG files. They'll have extensions of either .jpg or .jpeg. Open your Windows Control Panel and look for "File Associations", scroll down to the .jpg or .jpeg extensions and select the program you want from the list of installed programs you have. From then on, those files will open with Photoshop. Or -- within FP -- right-click the file name and select "Open with". Then choose the program you want from the list. -rt_/) -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 19, 2011 1:00 AM To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 6, Issue 141 When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. 2. And it is not only an issue to prevent stealing of data...it is a server security issue. Some bots would use so many resources that they would bring down the servers. So there are many reasons for monitoring and preventing bot access. Joan In a message dated 8/4/2011 4:04:41 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, pjroots@att.net writes: Jim, You may be thinking about previous discussions regarding munging of email addresses via JavaScript or other methods. Those methods are employed for browser access, as opposed to a bot accessing the unmunged address directly from the server. Think about it. Any internet company with proprietary data, including RootsWeb or Ancestry, can and does block unwanted bots routinely. Otherwise all of the data they have created or purchased that is stored on their servers could be harvested. For example, insurance companies could steal the entire SSDI, which Ancestry has to pay for. Or Joe Blow Genealogy Services could steal the 1930 census index, etc. Pat

    3. Malicious scanners would ignore robot.txt Those spiders just want email addresses and are not worried about you telling them to stay off. I am not sure if robot.txt works on Freepage sites In Ruth's case it looked like the scam people actually read the site because they put Mather Story in their email. of course their spider perhaps worked out surname and used that in a template. If they are reading the site then nothing will stop them..... I use email in graphic form for cousins on my site. I put them on web page for their family but only if they ask. I do not use Guestbooks I have open Mailto for cousins to contact. And so many do it is wonderful way to find cousins. As was said Gmail has great spam filter facility as does Kaspersky which I pay for but really I want their virus etc function. I am also very experienced at reading emails and knowing scams etc - I really don't understand why people worry about scams from Nigeria - just delete them........... To have any effect at all, it must be in the root directory and because of the configuration of the Freepages server, users do not have access to their root directory. 2) The bot must be well mannered and follow the instructions in any robots.txt file. The bots who harvest email addresses are NOT well mannered. They will ignore robots.txt 3) Staff has always monitored server access and been very particular about which bots (spiders) are allowed. 3. When I started hiding my email address I used a free program (which is very small and you download it to your computer) called "E_Cloaker" which asks you for the email address you want to hide and the alternate text you want to show and then produces something like '<a href="&#169;&#48;&#172; etc etc, which you can then paste into any web page, even on rootsweb pages. For an example, go to this page - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~davismcdougall/family/p00030.htm#05238 - and view the source where you will see some very long lines across the page which is the source line for the number in brackets at the start of each entry for a person on that page. No, I don't use E_Cloaker to put these lines in; I have since written the code to build these lines in my own genealogy program, but E_Cloaker would be quite suitable for including a few email addresses on a page. As for Ruth's problem in a guest book, you would have to write some javascript to accept the information the guest entered onto the page and then securely hide from prying eyes. In the guest book only show the name without the email address. The javascript should send the email address to Ruth for safe keeping and never keep it on the web site and if anyone wants to write to another guest they would have to write to Ruth first and ask for the address. Greg On 4/08/2011 4:02 AM, Ralph Taylor wrote: > Ruth wrote: "I'm thinking there is no way to prevent anyone from getting > emails from a guestbook." > > The worst aspect of the malicious-copying-of-email-addresses problem seems > to be harvesting by bots. 2. I'm not sure about Freepages but I know in many areas of RootsWeb staff monitors which spiders are allowed access to the sites. So there are other checks in place in addition to someone using the robots.txt file. Joan In a message dated 8/4/2011 4:08:33 A.M.
