My two cents: Hurray for the Freepages Users' Agreement! A company's provision of free web space would seem to motivated -- at least in part -- by public service. It's reasonable, then, that the information on that space BE public. If one wants private, password-protected web space, there are services which will provide it for a fee. -rt_/)
Our experts have spoken on whether this is acceptable on FreePages, but it should be mentioned again, for those using other hosts as well, that using javascript to protect a page does not secure it. FYI this specific setup only works as a gateway, a door, all files beyond it are not secure, because FreePages does not give users the level of access to make them secure. And if you did find a system to securely use passwords ... never use a simple 'inside' homepage name like 'home.html', and that is not mentioning the google results ... Sending personal information to a third party entrepreneur is always questionable. He may find there is a business using that information for other purposes. -----Original Message----- <SNIP> >To Pass word protect your site check this one. >http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genealogy123/ <SNIP>
What is all this mush about password protecting your site on the internet. I thought that as genealogists we were here to help one another. If people don't want information stolen, don't put it on the internet, simple. For every gate one human builds there will be a dozen others who will find a way around it. Pat recently pointed out to me that most of the links from my Freepages to my WorldConnect file were broken. I did some checking and it appears that the only ones that still work are the ones that were created after I got Family Tree Maker 2010 and then updated my WorldConnect file; the others were from FTM 16. I wrote to FTM and was referred to Rootsweb Help. Here is the response I got: Dear Jenny, We appreciate your message. Yes, the two versions of Family Tree Maker are different enough that would result in individuals being numbered differently and resulting in your redoing your links. Unfortunately the only solution is go through individual to fix the issues. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know. Daniel RootsWeb Support Team So, any of you who have upgraded from an older version of FTM and then updated your WorldConnect file might want to check your links. Sigh. So much for getting to start on new pages. :-( Jenny

Freepages sites can NOT be password protected without violating the Freepages agreement that content on Freepages servers be publicly accessible. Also, the site that was referenced as an example of a way to password protect access to a Freepages site contained commercial advertising of items for sale, which also violates the Freepages agreement. Violations of the agreement that all Freepages account holders have digitally signed can result in that individual account being closed. There will always be disagreements about the content and accuracy of "family trees" as displayed on any particular site. But everyone who requests and uses space to display their family tree information on the Freepages server must adhere to the agreement they digitally sign when they request account space on the Freepages servers. Is there an explanation on how to set this up. It appears to use a service of www.response-o-matic.com which is not a free service. and it does not show how your site is actually protected. Mike First -- asking questions demonstrates that you are definitely not an idiot, but are interested and want to get things right :) Second, at RootsWeb Freepages -- you register a "site", not individual (multiple pages). If your site covers more than one surname or locality, Your home page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~judde1421/ has <title>Judd</title> In the Freepages index, it is thus indexed under "J" for Judd.:http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/directory/genealogy-J.html If you want it to appear in the RootsWeb Surnames or Resources Index, you can do that starting here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~websites/register.html For third party search engines such as Google, you'll want to think about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as Pat Geary mentioned. For example, in addition to a <title> tag you can add meta tags to the head section of your page for keywords and a description, e.g. <meta name="keywords" content="Key Words, separated by commas, that will help a search engine index your page"> <meta name="description" content="A brief (about 25 words or less)description of the content of your page"> http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/basichtml2.htm There is no "one size fits all" answer for every Freepages user. Just keep asking questions about anything you don't understand. Pat Asher
At the risk of sounding a complete idiot here, can someone guide me as to how to send up and register my 2nd page which will be linked from my first which is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~judde1421/ I am wondering how it works to send up another page titled 'index'. Your Home Page contains very little actual content and neither do your other pages. You might want to check out Google's Help on Search Engine Optimization as to what Google is looking for when it indexes sites and returns a list of those that might match the terms the viewer is searching for. On the right hand side of the page under Help resources is a pdf version of their guide. You might want to download that and look it over. I have a set of old family letters (1850's to maybe 1890's) that I am considering adding to my Freepages site, and I'm not sure how I want to organize them. I would love some suggestions, pros & cons, etc. My site (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jennycalvin/index.html) is organized with a page for each major surname, then subpages of "Photos," "Documents," and "Tombstones," so the letters would fit well under the "Documents" page. There are over 300 letters, so I'm not sure if I should make a separate page for each one, or group them by who wrote them (some are from siblings, some from cousins, some from schoolmates, etc.), or group them by date, or what. Also, I find the originals fascinating to look at, but I don't know if everyone else will, to make it worth scanning them (I only have photocopies), but I guess I could add that later, after the transcriptions are up. I'm thinking maybe have Sneed (surname) > Documents > Letters to Mollie > author. Would it be better to have a long page with all the letters from Sarah on one page, or a page for Sarah with a link to each letter? Which would be more user-friendly? I welcome any suggestions y'all have. Thanks! Jenny
The freepages website I signed up for is not showing up in the surnames websites list. It is "Dillree in America" and it is not showing up under "D". When I log on to my freepages, it does take me to my freepages website. also, when I "google" Dillree, i am not seeing my rootsweb freepages. -- Barbara

If you get used to using all lowercase in naming your files, you are less likely to have problems. Use hyphens instead of spaces in naming files and folders instead of pretty red flower.html use pretty-red-flower.html DOn't make your file names overly long and name them to describe the image or the file. Makes them easier to identify at a glance. See http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/naming.htm for more information. Pat G.

Hi Don, I'm afraid you'll have to change any back links you have to your home page, or upload a copy of your home page with the upper case "I" so the links will work on the server. Linux systems (which RootsWeb uses) are case sensitive. index.html and Index.html are different files on RootsWeb servers. Pat Asher
