My site is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~acwunits/ I have the files ready to upload but have not been able to make the links work. I created the files in NeoOffice and am using Fetch to upload them. (The Civil War Units File is a list of more than 3000 people who are willing to help others research specific units in the U.S. Civil War. I have maintained this for about 20 years but up to now I have sent the files to someone else to upload. That option no longer exists so I got web space on rootsweb and am climbing a steep learning curve.) The Rootsweb new user instructions page says "When you upload your first page (usually your main homepage) call it index.htm or index.html." So I saved the list of files as html with the filename index.html and uploaded it. But the file names come out as text, not links. I uploaded a file with the same name as the first one in the list but still there are no links. What do I need to do? A lesser problem: The NeoOffice files are single spaced (with carriage returns; they're lists) and have spacing within lines to make items line up. After I upload them, they are double spaced and wherever there were several spaces within a line, it has been reduced to one space. I made sure I set the transfer mode to Text. 1. Why don't search engines find my rootsweb pages? (Janice T) Janice T, Clicking your link in the e-mail; I get one attractive page with 2 photos.... an upper header says: Busby Historical Pages [to the L.H. -and- R.H.] 70th infantry. Janice asked, re: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tomerbusby/GenealogyPages/ Busby_Historical_Pages.html (Note broken link due to word wrap) "I would like for search engines to find these pages so I can share the photos and the people's names relating to this. However, when I type in keywords that are unique to my page, it never appears in the search. How do I get my keywords into the source or, how do I get search engines to find my pages so I can share them?" There are several issues with search engines indexing your pages and delivering them as hits in searches. Here are a few: 1. Timing -- SE bots "spider" the Web, page by page, to find content and don't get through the whole Web every day. It may take a few weeks or months for your pages to show up in searches. 2. Structure of the page -- SEs rely on the on heading tags (h1, h2, etc. -- think "outline") for indexing page content. If these tags are absent (as with yours), your page is ignored by the search engines. 3. Operating system -- If, as Lorrie's message suggested, your site isn't Linux-friendly, the bots may skip it because they're Linux critters. 4. Text vs. graphics -- Graphics indexing isn't yet as advanced as that for text. 5. "Keywords" -- Most SEs have gone away from using keywords in the doc head to assess and index content. (They got burned too often.) 6. Index/follow -- Meta statements in pages can tell a bot whether to index a page or not and whether to follow links on the page or not. If you've used noindex or nofollow, well-behaved bots will obey. So, these suggestions: -- Look up the use of heading tags and put them on your pages appropriately. -- Make your site Linux-friendly. It's the OS for 99.9% of Web servers. -rt_/)

One of the things they don't like you to upload is EXE files. Files that are accepted are files ending in HTM, JPG, PDF, TXT, RTF, and probably more. But skip EXE and ZIP. UPPER or lower case for these files is OK. ----- Original Message ----- From: freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 05, 2011 00:00 Subject: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 6, Issue 153 When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. Where do I find the list of file types that are prohibited on Rootsweb? Please advise!
I would transfer my database from FTM 16 to 2010 to whatever in the same why I'd transfer a PAF to FTM. Export it to GEDCOM first, then import it into the new application. When I share my database with others, I don't know what they have for an application. So I always export to GEDCOM. I have FTM now because so many send me their databases in that format. What I would like is an application that would renumber my database (*order doesn't really matter to me*). I just want a different I001. I'd started (*probably like most people*) with myself. For security purposes, I'd like to obfuscate who I am when I publish. I brute-forced a change once. I created a basic database with Biblical genealogy. Then imported my database. Since both databases had some duplicated RIN's, the new imported database renumbered. Helped some. But that's really just an offset. Anyone could see that my record came after Benjamin, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, yada yada. --kg > > As far as I know, FTM does not change the individual ID #'s each time you > save a new GEDCOM. As far as I know, FTM does not change the individual ID #'s each time you save a new GEDCOM. My WorldConnect link problems are because I had to upgrade from FTM 16 to FTM 2010 (16 would not work on Windows 7), and the two programs are different enough that it changed the ID #'s. I am assuming that once I have fixed my links, they will stay correct. That is, until a few years from now when I have to get a new computer with a new OS that will not run FTM 2010 . . . . Jenny
