Yes, I have _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com.com/~ilogle/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com.com/~ilogle/) for my county site on the genweb project but the new freepages site address is much longer. Those were set up on the WWW server with account IDs of XXcounty where XX equaled the postal code for the state, followed by the first six letters of the county name. The URL of the WWW server is www.rootsweb.ancestry.com When the idea of free web space for individual genealogy accounts was first floated, it was decided that users would like to have unique URLs available for use for different areas of their research. So the Freepages server was configured to symlink directories within an individual account to a unique URL for each directory. Thus, http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/genealogy_html/ is symlinked to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/ If you use the history_html or alumni_html directories for uploading files, those directories can be reached using their respective symlinked (and distinctive) URLs. I'm confused. I just moved my personal genealogy site to freepages. I also have a county site with the URL address: rootsweb.ancestry.com. Why is that address so different from the freepages address? Roger

Jim, I have been corresponding with Rod Davis about this and Rod agrees with you. I now do too -- up to a point. The initial test I conducted was a Google search for the word "tutorials", part of the phrase "Pat's Web Page Tutorials", which is part of the SSI footer on every page at http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/ What I discovered was that a Google search for tutorials site:http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com or "Pat's Web Page Tutorials" site:http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ reported all the pages with the ssi include for the footer. Changing the site:URL to freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/ excluded hits for the pages with the ssi include for the footer. I'm trying to understand why there is a difference in the hits from the entire Freepages server, and those from my specific account. The specific include for this directory is an HTML file as opposed to a TXT file. Could that be a factor? Pat Asher
I would like to provide another viewpoint of having the webmaster's name indexed, as in "Text Copyright 2011 by John Doe". We all know it can be a bit complicated to recite a freepages URL, especially over the phone. Using my school-alumni site as an example < http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/ > the conversation goes something like this to give the URL verbally: http colon backslash backslash freepages dot school hyphen alumni dot rootsweb dot ancestry dot com backslash tilda florian backslash I've found it much easier to rely on Google's indexing. I can just tell someone to go to Google and enter freepages+florian+a specific community... like freepages+florian+misc (where all my sites are listed). If I can't remember in which "community" I put something or if I'm just being lazy that day, I tell them they can google freepages+my full name to get to any of my pages, where they can then use the on-site search box. Besides this useful point, if you use a copyright meta tag, your name is probably indexed from there also. Also, today, almost any search for a name requires qualifiers -- like John Doe+genealogy. If you search just for a name on any search engine, you'll only find millions of hits, mostly from "living people search" type websites, or for social networking sites. Most genealogy searchers figure out they need to use search qualifiers to drill down and get better results. So, I wouldn't waste time trying to block a copyright name. Thanks for the tip . . . I now have it figured out . . . Please take a look at the site and critique . . . http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rtrose/ Dick Rose . . . ---------------------------------------------- If the folder names are genealogy_html and history_html etc, etc, they are the various communities that are part of your server space. As Pat Geary said, the xxxx_html directories are part of the structure of your account. Through symlinking, each of them represents a separate URL for your account, e.g. freepages.history.rootsweb.andestry.com/~userID/ freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/ freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/ You can upload files to any of those xxxx_html directories, and each will be a different and specific URL for specific areas of your research. I note that the site assigned already has numerous folders already in place. I tried to delete them but was instructed they could not be deleted due to the fact that files may be included - however no files are visible when you open the folder. The Properties for the folder are coded such that I am not familiar - it has been too long since I have been exposed to the code. Dick Rose dtrose@cox.net

The SSI only appears on the page when compiled by a browser. Pat Asher
I think the simplest method would be to use an image instead of text (without an ALT tag) -----Original Message----- Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2011 15:58:32 -0500 From: Charles Dobie <cdobie@superaje.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] Can I exclude a block of text from Google search? Here's the problem -- perhaps hundreds of pages on a website might have, for example, "Text Copyright 2011 by John Doe". Therefore, "John Doe" gets indexed on each page although John Doe is never mentioned elsewhere on the page. So when someone googles "john doe", there is a mass of hits, perhaps none of which are actually useful. I never edit my site live and would encourage you NOT to do so. I always keep the site on my computer, edit it on my computer then publish it to FreePages. I would encourage you to get a copy of your site onto your computer ASAP if you do not already have it there and use any of the free editors available to work on your site. Then publish it. That way no matter what happens you have at least two copies of the site. Another backup copy is always a safe bet. While editing my Freepages website at this link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grannyapple/SLONAKER/SLONA KERhome.html A pop-up advertising box which appeared while editing my Freepages site resulted in losing all my coding, photos, links, webpage color codes, etc. All that I was left with was one big paragraph on a white background, as one can see when accessing the above link. This not only happened on this website but another also. It didn't do this everytime I edited my replacement link, but only when the pop-up ad appeared. I had created the new HOME page in WORD and saved it as I went, as even the new HOME editing page was interrupted and lost a couple of times during creation. Anyone else have that problem. Audrey

The server doesn't have an unzip utility, and secondly there is no way of knowing the contents of the zipped file, e.g. executable files etc.. Barry
