    3. I am just getting back into writing my own HTML coding after a long absence as I need to make a lot of amendments to my family history pages. When I wrote my original pages, I was using Avant Browser/IE so right click on the page to be amended worked every time. BUT I now use Firefox - and OK I get the Souce page, but not a version I can work on to amend my script. So how do I find the source page without having to switch browsers? I'm sure the answer is simple, but I've spent all day trying to sort this out and have got nowhere :( Regards, Ann McClean in Mid-Wales, U.K. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List Owner PALMER-EAST-ANGLIA-UK@rootsweb.com For the discussion and sharing of information regarding the PALMER surname in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Huntingdonshire, South Lincolnshire, and the borders with Essex and Bedfordshire. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List Owner WEATHERSTON@rootsweb.com mailing list For the discussion and sharing of information regarding the WEATHERSTON surname in the Norham and Horncliffe area of Northumberland in particular, and all places where their WEATHERSTON descendants have settled. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAWTHORN, SCOTT, & DeSILVA PALMER Family History Pages: http://www.annmcclean.co.uk/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. 3. Have you looked at the various HTML tools available for Firefox? [ Tools > Addons ] Some editors, like Bluefish for instance, will do what your wanting to do also. Seamonkey, the "new" version of the old Mozilla Suite, has a built in web page editor, as well as e-mail and all the old Mozilla Suite stuff. Based on Firefox code. They were:- (a) Using a delayed JavaScript method, or (b) Placing the text in an iFrame. My preferred method was the iFrame as it is supported in all browsers. There was some objection to the iFrame on the grounds that it can be used to carry malware. But for that to happen, the iFrame itself has to be targetted through access to the server via FTP. Your password would need to be hacked, and in the case of the Rootsweb servers, there is no way of executing a script to find pages with iFrames and do the dirty deed. To prove the concept, I posted a short page titled - "Test noIndex of iFrame Data" that included some Lorem Ipsum text, plus my name (once using Javascript, once using an iFrame) plus "Text Copyright John Doe 2011" using the iFrame. To cut a long story short, the page was indexed by Google on Dec 14, and my name or the copyright note do not show in a search. The basic search term uses:- Test noIndex of iFrame Data site:ancestry.com - and adding Barry Carlson or the copyright statement shows that neither term was indexed. If you are referring to the xxxx_html directories, they are part of your account structure and must not be deleted. Just ignore those you do not use. Any directories you have created yourself can be deleted using File Manager or an FTP utility. Pat Asher

Yet, each time I use the delete option available on my FTP software and confirm delete, there is a long delay of seemingly inactivity, there is 'working' showing at the bottom of the window, I get a message "550 - Remove directory operation failed." Never before on a site have I had problems adding and/or deleting directories as desired. Does this mean one is not able to arrange the directories in the name and manner they choose and are instead forced into using one size fits all, that doesn't? if i am viewing this in an incorrect light and can actually delete directories, I apologize and ask that you please let me now how without using the ftp software's 'delete' option and dialog. Jim, A list of iframe vulnerabilities from 2007, and particularly related to Firefox:- Browser cross domain exploits XSS/CSRF reflection attacks CSS and iframes can scan your LAN from the internet! LAN scanning with Javascript and iframes CSS iframe overlays URL redirection Most of the above threats have now been dealt with by Mozilla Firefox. The LAN scanning can still take place, but if you are PW protected the threat stops there. In the case of the RW servers, they are HTML only with the addition of limited SSI and cgi. I've had an iframe with its source located on another server embedded in a RW page for some time and to the best of my knowledge there has never been any attempt to launch an exploit via it. Cross communication with the iframe and its host browser is now virtually impossible. https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Displaying_web_content_in_an_extension_without_security_issues If the iframe concept was to be dropped, then a possibly more secure way would be to use the XMLHttpRequest which can only communicate within the same domain, or in the case of RW within the same sub domain. 3. Bill, I do the same thing with working file names, such as file name "BrownJohn1823.html" but I make the family name CAPITAL letters. But since my web pages are often updated and each contains many biographies, when I upload a working file name into the existing web page, I then keep the Web Page name such as Biography01, Biography02, etc. That way the index doesn't need to be changed. The Index might read something like this: Names "ABLE thru CURTIS" with a link to Biography01, "DANIELS thru GREATHOUSE" with a link to Biography02, and so on. Mini-bio File Names (Bill Thompson) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Mon, 05 Dec 2011 09:09:46 -0500 From: Bill Thompson <billthompson76@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] Mini-bio File Names To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <4EDCD0AA.2080904@gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed This is just "thinking out loud". I'm not expecting you to come up with an answer. One of the things that make my present file naming convention seem simple, is that I'm using a similar system for the existing .doc bios I wrote 10 years ago. And when I open it, the page header, or at leas the first sentence will give the person's name and birth date, if know. So I can instantly generate the file name "BrownJohn1823.html" without having to look him up in the tree. Of course before I'm finished with a mini-bios's HTML I have to look up the person's node number, but that's presently one of the last steps I do before uploading. More important, when I look at the directory of my HTML files, the file names are meaningful to me. "HazlettSamuel1780.html" is immediately identifiable and significant. Whereas "Bio_I14.html" wouldn't mean much. I probably would get to recognize the "founding fathers'" one or 2 digit Ids, but "Bio_I1237,htnl" is not likely to ring any bells. I like having the surname control the sorting. I presently have about 9 Samuel Hazletts, so "HazlettSamuel_I123.html" isn't very meaningful. But "SamuelHazlett1847_I582.html" could work. But keeping the file names short seems desirable.

An iframe is usually the best way to add content to a page that you do not want indexed by the search engine bots. Generally speaking, the good bots will follow all links unless told not to, e.g. <a rel="nofollow" href="somesite.com">Some Site</a> In addition, the iframe source link is in the same format as img and script links, i.e. <iframe rel="nofollow" src="somefile.html" > - and the bots don't normally follow src links. Putting the rel="nofollow" attribute in the iframe is the first line of defence. The second is to use the following meta tags in the head of "somefile.html" :- <meta name="googlebot" content="noindex"> <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> The advantage of the iFrame method is that there will be no links from the iFrame and no reason for a Bot wanting to index it. The Bot knows it is there because it has read the source url for the iFrame's html file, but then finds that it need not go past the iFrame's meta tag. The following example page inserts 'Barry Carlson' into the text using the JavaScript innerHTML method, and the same insertion (green) later in the text using an iFrame. The text block at the bottom (blue) is also inserted using an iFrame. http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/xhr/inner-html.html The simple JavaScript method makes use of the setTimeout function to delay the insertion of the text for 1 second after the page has loaded. This should be sufficient to avoid the Google Bot which will have scanned a page within 100 milliseconds of it loading. My preference is to use the iframe method as it is a supported HTML method in all browsers. Barry

To shorten the file names, unless I have both HAZLETTS and HAZLERS in my tree, I try to use a 3 or 4 letter abbreviation for the surname. The abbreviation doesn't have to be meaningful to anyone but me. I also use capital letters to indicate different parts of the name, so mine might look something like hazSamuel1847.html (Hazlett) buxDarius1808.html (Buxton) gmblRobertV1883.html (Gamble) gmnJosiah1814.html (Gammon) Pat Asher

    3. This is just "thinking out loud".
