I like Yahoo better than Google for Genealogy. Try searching two words, such as your surname funeral. You will get mostly obits. Other words will get much different results from searching only for a name.
I use google search extensively for finding web sites related to individuals and places in my genealogy research, the inclusion of such terms as 'family', ' genealogy', 'history' etc narrow such searches to more suitable results. I also use Advanced Search to search within a site that does not have a good search engine included, this can help greatly in larger sites. Google books also will bring up many historical documents unavailable elsewhere and I have found several references and details about my ancestors via such methods. I generally do not use those 'pay for' sites due to my reluctance to give financial information on line but such sites as Find My Past that have an advanced search can be 'manipulated' by changing the search criteria to reveal much of their content. Takes a little longer but most of the information can be found and viewed this way. The original inquiry was about using google+ (google plus) which seems to be yet another 'social networking' site and apparently requires submitting personal information to join something which we should avoid where ever possible. Such sites may be useful for interaction between individuals on a common subject, such as genealogy, but I fail to see how it can help more than say the Rootsweb Message Boards with actual research and inquires. But then I do not subscribe to ANY social networks! Don R The Rawls of Dorset
Google+ is "Facebook by Google". Hopefully without all the issues there are when using Facebook. If you have an extended family and wanted to set up some kind of family group to share and collaborate it could be a good idea. There are already so many surname lists and query boards for just blind search and share it seems a waste to set up another. As for submitting personal information to a website, all I can say is that there is already plenty of information available if someone is willing to do the work to get it. The information that you might have to submit to Google+ isn't going to make much difference. -- “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government lest it come to dominate our lives and interests”. - Patrick Henry - _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._

It's what got me started on family research.
Google+ appears to have awesome potential to gather groups of genealogists together who would probably never do so in real life. Imagine being able to discuss research, visually share family images and treasures and more. If anyone ever uses it, I would like to hear. Google is very useful. I start with Ancestry.com search, then I enter the surname in Google for other genealogy pages, discussion forums, family websites and living descendants. This requires patience. Different results come up if I enter the just the surname, surname Family, surname Genealogy, surname+the state, etc. White Pages.com is a free source of addresses and phone numbers. The other people searches require payment, but we can see cities, related persons, etc., without paying. With Ancestry, spelling does not have to be exact, but with the others, you have to enter spelling variations as separate searches. In come cases, Ancestry.com has Public Records with people's addresses and phone numbers up to about 1993. Then I enter living people's full names into Google to check if they have Facebook or individual websites, and, if I know where they grew up, check Classmates.com, which requires a subscription. Not really meant as a question, but rather an indication that progress with the implementation of CSS3 is now enabling web designers to create those fancy eye-catching headings without using Photoshop. The Webkit browsers, i.e. Chrome, Safari and the Mac O/S only Omniweb are progressively implementing various CSS3 proprietry properties (prefixed -webkit-), which will allow you to generate various headings and implement them in the Webkit browsers or substitute with a screenshot image of your work in the other browsers. Rather cheap - a big fat zero - when compared with the cost of Photoshop $$$! The following page by Joss Crowcroft will help explain how it is done:- <http://www.cssreset.com/2010/css-tutorials/fun-with-webkit-background-clip-and-font-face/> A demonstration page which will open in all browsers, but with an image of the demo heading and a statement regarding using either Chrome or Safari browsers if you are currently not, can be found here:- http://countjustonce.com/css3-designs/text-css3-styling.html The difference with the last url is that I have modified the rendering of the heading to demonstrate that linear gradient coloring can also be applied to the selected text only, and added a small amout of blurring to the text shadow. So in short, you can avail yourself of the latest design tools - a knd of "poor man/woman's" Photoshop! Barry

Here's something for those of you finding a need to correct some CSS problem that appears in either the Firefox, Opera or Chrome and Safari browsers. It is well known that the Internet Explorer suite of browsers can be addressed using Conditional Comments, e.g. <!--[if ie 8]> <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles-for-ie8.css"> <![endif]--> With a little modification, the same Conditional Comments can be used to target all other browsers and exclude Internet Explorer, e.g. <!--[if !ie]><!--> <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles-for-not-ie.css"> <!--<![endif]--> The Internet Explorer developers have decided that as from the release of Internet Explorer 10, the support for Conditional Comments will end. The rationale behind that decision is that IE10 will be W3C compliant and the need for web designers to target it separately to all other browsers will therefore end. In my opinion, that decision is misplaced, or its an attempt to take back some of the market share that has been lost to the other browsers before IE's share drops below 50 percent. So how do you sort out problems that may exist between the Gecko (Firefox, SeaMonkey) or Opera and Webkit (Chrome, Safari) browsers? Well, I had a need to do so recently for Firefox when I found that a padding declaration in a <textarea> resulted in padding being applied top and bottom as well as to the outside of the vertical scrollbar. This is a known "bug" in Firefox - first reported in 2002, i.e. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=157846 Now Opera, Chrome and Webkit leave the scrollbars alone when padding is applied in the <textarea>, and as I could do without padding on the inside of the scrollbar, I then sought a means of targetting Firefox to remove the padding-right declaration and return the scrollbar to the border of the <textarea>. Luckily, Firefox has a CSS expression that is used for addressing Firefox Extensions and it is application is, e.g. @-moz-document url-prefix() {/* Firefox, SeaMonkey */ textarea {padding-right:0} } Likewise, I have found a similar expression that can be used for addressing the Webkit browsers (Chrome and Safari), e.g. @media screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:0) {/* Chrome & Safari */ #myDiv {display:none;} } and finally Opera, e.g. @media all and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:10000), not all and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:0) {/* Opera */ #myDiv {display:none;} } A page incorporating these CSS detection schemes for various browsers and a variation to the usage of Internet Explorer Conditional Comments is at:- http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bristowe/test/css-ie-target.html Barry
