3. Walter, I can help you with the Google questions. To link to any outside site or page from a Google Sites' website involves creating a link. You may add one in a navigation bar, a sidebar menu or in a page. I work with Google Sites often, if I can be of help, just ask. Lorrie On 03/21/12 08:54, Walter V. My preference is to use the following script - http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/test/depth-check.js - to measure the actual page depth locally, and then include the value shown by the Alert in your CSS, e.g. #userContentFP { position:relative; height:3066px; } No need to place the script on the server, and it will only be effective locally to provide you with an updated value for your CSS if the page is changed. I haven't checked what impact a defined minimum font-size will have, but the zoom / ctrl+ feature gets catered for reasonably well. Barry

This can be overcome by preferably changing your layout to "relative positioning" where each element follows on from the next, and the
tag is then actually at the end of the page. However, I do have a small JavaScript that measures the total depth of the page and adds that as a "height" in an outer containing div. That tells the Footer where it can go. Let me know what you'd like to do. Barry

    3. Thank you, Pat, for your quick reply. I have searched all over my FTP program (ClassicFTP by NCH software) for an option to set it to "passive" but cannot locate one. I will continue to try to find out through their message boards. I have also posted a message on the MAC support groups boards to see if there is anything I should be doing in that area. Put another way, it does no harm to include them, nor if you don't. When you validate pages at:- http://validator.nu - you may find errors with some of your meta tags, e.g. <meta name="copyright" content="Sing A Song Of Sixpence Co. My advice is to just ignore those sort of errors as they will eventually be resolved. As I have mentioned earlier; where a page validated as XHTML1.0 Strict, the same page when equipped with the HTML5 will also be rendered in Strict mode irrespective of some minor HTML5 validation errors. 3. Thanks Barry, With that implemented it should make it easier to spot errors when validating pages on the web rather than by file upload to validator.w3.org. I've also noticed that when checking valid links with the W3 link checker ( http://validator.w3.org/checklink ), the links in the footer are all redirected and give a 'broken link'. warning (not an error). Do they also need updating? If so, now would be a good time; while changing the tables to div. Current practice is to use a standard
mark-up and CSS to display:table, display:table-row and display:table-cell. A HTML5 version has resulted in much simpler mark-up and less CSS, but it only works in the W3C compliant browsers, and IE7 and earlier get left out. http://countjustonce.com/test/rw-footer-w3c.html To fix the usual problems, IE only Conditional Comments are used to place a table round the existing mark-up, insert a min-width substitute and finally fix a margin issue endemic in IE7. This version now renders well using Windows 7 in IE10pp2 through to IE5.01 http://countjustonce.com/test/rw-footer-all.html Barry

HTML5 is much less restrictive and therefore easier to write than XHTML 1.0. No requirement to declare the namespace uri, e.g. "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" with the doctype. No requirement to add type attributes to script and style elements - the browser determines the defaults itself. No requirement to add // etc. to included scripts or stylesheets for them to validate. No requirement to use a long doctype such as - - now where do I have to go to find that?! Even I can remember . No requirement to choose to include or not include a DTD URI in the DOCTYPE (mentioned in the first point) and neither is there a requirement to choose between Transitional and Strict mark-up. Using HTML5 gives you a Strict doctype that triggers full Standards mode. Quirks mode rendering by browsers is a thing of the past. A simple character set declaration - ** Use http://validator.nu designed simply to handle HTML5, and which is not constricted by confusing Document Type Declarations. XHTML frowned upon tags such as are permitted. Over-all the syntax is cleaner, with no requirement to self-close single tags such as ,
,
etc.. and as well as hosting the new HTML5, it allows legacy browsers render all of the code "they understand" in Standards mode. Note: ** is an option, but "utf8" covers everything that "iso-8859-1" does, and more. My challenge is; Take a valid XHTML 1.0 Strict page, change the doctype to and remove the extraneous stuff from the
tag. Let me know if the page doesn't render exactly the same as previously. Barry Hi Barry, I'm not sure if the challenge was to me personally, but I accepted it anyway. :-) I changed to the much simpler !DOCTYPE html and also switched to utf-8. Just as you predicted, there was no observable difference using either Firefox 10.0.2 or IE 7. Admittedly my one website is rather simple at the moment, and is really just a sort of placeholder until I learn enough to flesh it out. I've not checked it with Chrome or any other browser. I had Chrome installed for a while, but removed it after I discovered it had installed a couple of processes without my permission. I gather that these run at startup and then just sit there forever taking up resources. :-( OK, not much in the way of resources, but the arrogance represented by software that does that just ticks me off. -- Later, Charlie C. 3. I'd like to thank Barry and Pat for this conversation. It's refreshing to see a new standard that, for a change, makes life simpler. If I read Barry's "No requirement.." correctly, it means all that extra stuff isn't needed in the HTML5 standard. We no longer need to choose between "strict" and "transitional" nor tell the browser where to find the definitions. About character sets, the "charset=" declaration: You may recall that I had a problem a while ago with included files displaying garbage characters. (Gosh, you wouldn't think plain text could be so complicated.) After much head-scratching and asking here, it seemed to be caused by a mismatch in character sets; the included files used a different character set than the one specified for the including doc. The problem was resolved only after changing the charset declaration in the doc head from "iso-8859-1" to "utf-8" and saving the included files in utf-8 format. Thanks, -rt_/)

Barry ================ Pat, I have, like you, also scripted pages in XHTML1.0 Strict and agree that format is rigid but satisfying after a good outcome. I'm lazy by nature, and HTML5 fits my life-style! Barry

For anyone who wants to know more on doctypes see: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_doctype.asp http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html http://htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/doctype.html Most of the folks I work with, including myself, use the XHTML Transitional of Strict doctype.
