Perhaps what's left of my hair is too gray, but I don't find the WYSIWYG that inspiring. My experiences of WYSIWYG editors are not good, and I have developed methods of creating with code "what I want" rather than the other way. For a full flown text editor, I would recommend PSPad, which will provide you with just about anything you want in the way of creating HTML pages. http://www.brothersoft.com/download-pspad-editor-24977.html I don't use it all the time, as I prefer the more basic text editor of Araneae for everyday work. Araneae makes use of multiple colors in its text-editor status which helps immensely when tracing an HTML error. In fact, it is almost impossible to make a syntax mistake, as an unexpected change in the displayed text color will alert you. http://www.ornj.net/araneae/ I will often use PSPad when doing extensive editing of a file, as the search and replace function works extremely well in it, whereas I have found some limitations in Araneae. There are some inbuilt extras in PSPad which I find of use from time to time, e.g. a Lorem text generator, to name but one. Barry

    3. I do all my pages in HTML. Layout is just how I want it. Easy to add pictures. Pages are HTML so any browser reads them without any bothersome viewers. Page size [ in Kb ] is easy to control. Text on pages is easily searchable. 3. Thanks to all who responded. I appreciate the comments and the help. It does sound, though, like many of us are using older software; some of the programs mentioned aren’t available any more. (I’ll still use FrontPage ’98 when the desktop gets its new motherboard.) Not sure I have the heredity correct, but it seems like Coffee Cup is the new Nvu and Sea Monkey is the new Netscape Composer. Coffee Cup has two versions, a free one without WYSIWYG and a $49 one with (seems pretty cheap). The free Sea Monkey’s WYSIWYG is the Firefox engine. In googling on the subject and reading reviews, I don’t see anyone talking about CSS or SSI support for the WYSIWYG. Is it because they’re now taken for granted? (FrontPage supports CSS , not Perl SSI – one learns to work around it and check after uploads.) On another note, viewing websites on this small laptop screen gives a renewed appreciation for sufficiently large font sizes, The feature of Chrome I use most often is the zoom to at least 125%, sometimes 200%. It seems like most sites are trying to crowd too much onto the page, making it all unreadable. -rt_/)

While many consider Expression Web as a WYSIWYG editor, Microsoft does NOT. See Are you new to Microsoft Expression Web? <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2511858>This article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2511858) outlines the prerequisites for using Expression Web effectively, along with a list of useful resources you can use to get up to speed on modern Web design. The bottom line is that you do need to have some knowledge of Web design before you'll be comfortable or effective using Microsoft Expression Web. I also feel that if you are going to use a WYSIWYG editor you need to learn at least the basics of writing html and css if you hope to do your own troubleshooting of problems you might have with your site. It is very simple. I don't remember if it offers "Projects" functionality. Documentation is available, if interested. By the way, I have been looking for one too and am now trying to learn Aptana. It offers HTML functionality but it is more than an HTML editor. HTML is just one part of this huge developer platform. Plugins are available but I have not checked this out. Lorrie

    3. Well, there's several ways to get started. One is to go to http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi Log in [ remember that case counts in your password ] On the next page click on the "Enter File Manager" button. From there you can create new pages or edit pages already uploaded to your site. The second is to use some HTML editor/Web Page creator software on your computer to create pages and then upload with FTP software or File Manager to your site. See the page at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/users.html The second method is my preference. I keep my site "backed up" on my computer and work on my pages. Another alternative for page creation is your genealogy software. Most modern genealogy programs now have a way to create a website for you from your database. That will generally give you a bare bones set of pages that you will want to add more information to.
