    1. [FreeHelp] Spam/malware posts to the list
    2. List Admin FPH
    3. Two days ago, a spam post was made to this list using the email account of a subscriber. That subscriber's email account had been hacked through a malware install on their computer, and they have been unsubscribed until they clean up their computer and account(s). Some of you have written to me saying you received a virus alert when you clicked on the link on that email. While 99.99% of posts to a RootsWeb mailing list are legitimate, you can recognize the warning signs of hack such as this one, e.g. Subject: (no subject) Body: No question, nor answer to a previous query which would relate the post to the list -- only a link to a site that does not appear to be genealogy related. IOW, the malware found an address in the infected computer's address book, and sent to everyone in that address book. Unfortunately, neither the list subscriber, nor myself as List Admin, can be aware of these hacks until an inappropriate post is made to the list. Please, let this latest occurrence serve as a reminder that EVERYONE should install an Anti-Virus program on their computer(s), and keep it updated on a regular basis. The best AV programs won't help much unless you download the updates that recognize the latest virus and security vulnerabilities. My own AV program, Norton 360, sometimes updates several times a day. Pat Asher List Admin

    3. Donna, Your account is there. To upload your pages, starting with your index.html file, you may use the built in file manager using your password assigned to you. You may also use a ftp client program such as coreftp.exe. I know your account is there because I looked at it on this url: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~avictorianwhisper/ Did you receive a welcome letter with instruction on how to access the freepages file manager? If so, there may be instructions in that letter on how to upload your html files. 3. Hi John, Have you tried Add your genealogy site to a Resource page This is for adding a site to a particular Resource page for a surname or locality. This is on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ I Googled ' How to add to Freepages Genealogy Directory' and that is what came up. Going to Rootsweb page [URL above] I must admit although I did it years ago, I now found the instructions rather confusing. Maybe it should read somewhere for Dummies like me: 'How to add your website to Freepages Genealogy Directory' and not 'Add your genealogy website to a Resource page'. I like simple. ;-)) My best wishes, Jill See website, KNIGHT, DAVIES and for 3 lines of JONES http://www.muirfamily-genealogy-online.co.uk/ -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Howard Sent: 08 June 2012 21:26 To: freepages-help-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [FreeHelp] Setting up website RE: How Do I Get Listed in the Freepages Genealogy Directory? The listing is not instantaneous. Freepages sites are reindexed on a schedule, about once a week, if memory serves. If your site does not appear in the index (under H for homepages) within 7 days, you can let us know the URL of your site, so the list members can check your coding -- or write to accounts @rootsweb.com for assistance. 3. Jim asked: "Our genealogy society would like to send out a survey to members asking for multiple choice answers. Could this be done better using our web page or via email? I would appreciate any help or suggestions where to look for info to create a form." I think it would work better to have the email about the survey include a link to the web page with the form. In the HTML form, the action= statement could refer to a script to process the user's input. Depending on how fancy you want to get, it could e-mail the answers to a data-collection person or tabulate and display results. As Barry mentioned, radio buttons are good for multiple choice answers, forcing a choice among alternatives. Also, you could use a pick-list -- the select/option approach. Each of these allows only one answer per question. For questions where you allow more than one answer, use check-boxes. For open-ended questions, use text fields. -rt_/)

    1. Re: [FreeHelp] Javascript to remove blank/empty fields from html form
    2. Barry Carlson
    3. Roger, The following script has been tried with Pat Asher's FGS Form and eliminates empty inputs. <script> function check_myForm(){ var inputs = document.getElementsByTagName("input"); for (var i=0; i < inputs.length; i++) { if (inputs[i].getAttribute('type') == 'text' && inputs[i].value ==''){ inputs[i].setAttribute('name',''); } } } </script> The script is relatively simple, and works as follows:- The var inputs = document.getElementsByTagName("input") gathers a list of the input tags associated with the form which are then looked at sequentially by the for (var i=0; i < inputs.length; i++) function which is a "for" loop looking for the following TRUE conditions:- inputs where the type = "text" AND where the inputs value = "null". When those conditions are met, it removes existing text associated with the 'name' attribute. I have only tested it in "mailto:", though I suspect it can be made to work using MailMerge, as received data will be allocated to 'name' fields in your template, and missing data will of course leave a blank field. Put the script in the <head> section and modify the top line of your form as follows:- <form id="myForm" action="mailto:you@domain.com" method="post" onsubmit="return check_myForm();" enctype="application/x-www.form-urlencoded"> Barry

    3. Did you download the "Higher Quality Image"? I hadn't ever seen that site before you posted. I found a little something interesting and downloaded it. As an experiment I ran it through an OCR program and it worked very well. It says the "Higher Resolution" is only 72 ppi but very good quality. The short answer is "No". Presumably, you downloaded the documents' images from one or more websites and the images had been intentionally "optimized" for Web display -- i.e., reduced to the resolution of computer monitors, a typical max of 100 dpi. Think of the missing pixels as information discarded from the original; it's been sent off to the trash dump and isn't there for you. There are some software programs - staples of high-tech crime television - which make fuzzy-logic guesses about what may have been in the missing pixels. -rt_/)

However, back when we first created the FGS form (maybe ten or twelve years ago?) we discovered the action="mailto:abc@xyz.com" directive did not work in all browsers. At that time, it worked in IE, but AOL was the other major player and would not execute the directive Thus we "had" to use Mailmerge for the form. Before spending hours working on a form specific JavaScript, make sure the action="mailto:" directive works for everyone. Pat Asher
