Yes, Billie, I'm talking about using a complete page: Meta Head, Body, Content with message directing visitors back to Main Index or Search. It is the same as my site design. To be a tiny bit unique, I wrote 4 short genealogy humor items and randomly assigned 1 of those 4 to these pages. The 4 humor items are in includes so I can change them if I want. On others of these, I used an image of our city with the message that they are in the right place, and directing them to Main Index or Search. But back to the questions, what are the pros and cons of using index.htm on image folders? Of using specifically an "HTTP 403" on image/index.htm ? What effects does it have on crawling? on indexing, specifically, will it keep images out of Google Images? If it keeps them out of Google Images, what effect (if any) does it have on pages that use those images? And is there any SEO effect, good or bad? Judy
DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS 10!!!!!! Especially if you have limited bandwidth internet connections. Windows 10, by default, uses a system similar to Bittorrent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent . What that means is that Windows uses YOUR computer to feed files and updates to other peoples computers. In effect they are stealing your internet bandwidth to update other computers. -- A cat is a puzzle with no solution. Cats are tiny little women in fur coats. When I make an index page for an image folder I make it a page with a link to the main index of the site. Something to the effect: "There are no visitor accessible pages in this folder. Please visit [ link to index page ]" It is a complete page. Head, body, everything. I'm revisiting this topic mainly because I want to understand how Google and other bots handle the use of /images/index.htm After a lot of reading, I think it isn't good to use "404" for these, as content is there but just sort of off limits. If you read this web entry, at least some website designers use indexes in image folders. http://www.os-templates.com/documentation/why-are-empty-index-files-in-folders The above website designer refer to these under the webpage code HTTP 403. Wikipedia says: "A web server <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_server> may return a *403 Forbidden* HTTP status code <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes> in response to a request from a client for a web page or resource to indicate that the server can be reached and understood the request, but refuses to take any further action. Status code 403 responses are the result of the web server being configured to deny access, for some reason, to the requested resource by the client." They have different 403s that can be used, but I don't understand all the nuances. My site uses a ton of newspaper and original images. They are being harvested and put onto icky webpages. For example, labeling a file as girls frilly dress or two boys is likely to end up on a s*x site. Submitters aren't happy about that. I'm tired of appealing to host companies to remove my content. And if it is overseas, tough luck. Another reason is my belief that all jpgs don't all need separately indexed as images for Search; using them on a page is visible enough. I use descriptive text H2, descriptive text page titles, and fully worded text links. So the topic and image can be found on the page where the image is used. My confusion is if I have an /image/index.html and indicate in the Title Meta tag "403" will Google still index the images for my site, OR is indexing not needed since most of the images are linked to their pages? Will it keep the jpgs from appearing in Google Images? What are the pros and cons to this? I ran Xenu tonight and it could not "switch into" the image directories where I used index.htm. Good because it shows they are working. But again what about the regular indexing of images by bots when the image is on a page? e.g. will those index as content, just not leave the images directory door wide open? (see example of a directory without an index.htm on http://www.os-templates.com/documentation/why-are-empty-index-files-in-folders ) Ralph alluded to creating problems if I use these index "doors". What kinds of problems? Can you be more specific? Does anyone know what SEO and SEO practices says about using the 403 designation as image directory "(restricted) doors"? Judy
I wasn't aware that these search boxes were going in all the pages.?? Just as Billie and Pat have suggested, add the CSS to the bottom of your existing stylesheet. Yes it will go into all the pages (half has 1 background; half has another). I'll add the search css to the regular CSS after I get it correct in 1 new include and page. Haven't had time to work on this today. Will try tomorrow. Thanks, Judy
Judy, The <div id="searches"> has been included OK. I note the comment after the closing </div> is missing a dash - should be <!--end #searches--> You haven't included the link to my CSS (file has been uploaded), which should come after your site CSS in the <head> section. The images I used are not the same as yours, and you need to download them from my site and ensure that the url(s) in the CSS file are adjusted for the path and names that you use. Once you have done that, let me know and I'll have another look. Don't worry about anything else until you've got the basics right. ;-) BTW; I couldn't find your include, i.e. http://freepages.genealogyrootsweb.ancestry.com/~lorian/_include/2015a_sitewide_searches_new.htm ... even after I fixed up a couple of typo's in the url. Which is what I would have done unless Barry has a special reason for just adding the link. pat -----Original Message----- From: Billie Walsh via [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, August 1, 2015 1:58 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Problem Page: Search box (Barry, can you look please?) ut oh So that means adding a (special) CSS file link to the whole site? I *was* almost done. Cry. Judy

Should the CSS file for this go in the include holding the search boxes?? ============= Just a reminder, the only thing an include adds is the content within the opening and closing body tags. Anything information included in the head section is ignored by FP includes. pat
Sorry, I was hurrying. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/_includes/2015a_sitewide_searches_new.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/temp_1_barrys-version-with-linked-script_content_search.htm CSS genealogy_search-boxes.css Should the CSS file for this go in the include holding the search boxes?? Or, (please tell me no) does the CSS for this need to go on all pages? (shoot me if it does -- I just finished all the mobile tags in every page). I recopied your code for the include and re-uploaded that much. The include online shows the images (my old ones, which are the ones in the css for tonight). I'll pick this up tomorrow; too tired tonight. Judy
Hi Barry, My page is here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/temp_1_barrys-version-with-linked-script_content_search.htm Include: http://freepages.genealogyrootsweb.ancestry.com/~lorian/_include/2015a_sitewide_searches_new.htm CSS: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/genealogy_search-boxes.css My page above doesn't look like the one you posted here: http://countjustonce.com/test/florian-search-boxes-1.html The table is now completely full width. I think it would look better with just a little space on right and left. But I'm unsure which width numbers I can change in the CSS or by how much? I changed one width from 57% to 50% but no effect. The H3 is inherited I assume from the primary CSS ( genealogy_dec-2014.css ) so it is flush left, instead of being centered. Should I just change that line to a class="center" ? The images do not show. I cannot figure out why. Both are in the _includes folder: _includes/2015a_sitewide_ff-logo-200.jpg _includes/2015a_sitewide_searches_google_custom_smnar.gif And I put both into the css file, but maybe I listed them the wrong way? One other thing... how are you intending the 's' tag? It results in a strikeout (see my page) but it isn't striking text on yours. I took out those tags, but then put it back. Not sure what you intended with that? Could you take a look please? Judy
Judy, I've reduced the height of the search table by 90px, and the whole thing including the Washington PA heading is enclosed within one div. There is a separate CSS file just for the search boxes. The div just needs to be inserted into the appropriate page(s), the CSS link placed in the head, and your site searches are active. http://countjustonce.com/test/florian-search-boxes-1.html The freefind and Google backgrounds are now links to their owners' sites. I've created a play on Google when when you hover over your Best On-Site Search Tips link! Barry ---------------------
Judy, I've put both the search boxes in one table, and the results is per:- http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/images/freefind-google-sb.png Do you want a white background, or do you want your usual page background to show through? Hi Barry, My background changes for 2 sections. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/wash-co-pa/o_f2/mcdonald-pa/ So I suppose it'd be best to keep the search boxes white. I was wondering 2 things: How do I get the CSS for the table you did to be wider, so the the Freefind image can be at the side of the word search, and same for the Google image? I'm hoping to decrease the vertical space taken up for this table at the top of every page, leaving so much empty space right/left. With RW banner, my H1, my Nav section, and search table, it's taking up almost to the "newspaper fold" on my 15" monitor. And second, how do I make the 2 lines of text be "even" across the page right across from each other, and with matching size/text (class=small was too big and =smaller had no effect)? I tried using the code Freefind used. But changing their code for my Florian's link made your CSS search box lose the entire google search area.. I did get the no decoration to work on both lines. Off to bed. Judy
You have specified two font sizes for the Freefind table and none for the other one. See if removing them gets you what you want. pat -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of JFlorian via Sent: Monday, July 27, 2015 12:21 AM To: Barry Carlson <[email protected]>; [email protected] <[email protected]>; [email protected] Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Problem Page: Search box (Barry, can you look please?) I have it almost level, but the Florian's link is darker and bigger than the text under Freefind. I wanted both with no decoration for "a link". Plus, both search boxes "level" and the text "level" on each side. I'm wondering, too, if I could put the image to the left or right of each search box, to reduce how much room the table takes vertically? Can it be spread out more, horizontally? If so, how would I do that? Judy, I'm unable to replicate the problem you described on either URL. Looking with Chrome running under Win 7. I did notice a considerable number of spans with inline styling; one contains only a non-breaking space. Is a closing tag missing? That's the most likely cause. If so, try inserting a closing tag (e.g., </span>) where you want the boldface to stop. See if that corrects the problem. -rt_/)
