    3. I am also chiming in about Windows 10. I was using Win 7 on a desktop & laptop, and very happy with it, although, truthfully, I probably would have still been using XP if my motherboard hadn't fried in my previous computer a couple of years ago and I had to buy a new computer, and so I kept totally ignoring those reminders that my Win 10 was waiting to be uploaded. I dreaded doing that because I also have a few older programs that I was very concerned about, Frontpage 2003 & PAF, in particular, and frankly, I'm not that great at tech except that I know how to run my computer and the programs I use. I was constantly reading up about experiences that others were having after making the switch to Win 10, and I was going to hold off in making that decision for my own. But I started noticing in the last couple of months that some of programs were not functioning properly, I use the desktop version of Windows Live and it wasn't always opening, and my good old FP 2003 was not connecting and often was forcibly being closed. I have never had any problems with those before, not in all of the years I've used them, and my suspicion is that something being done in the Win 7 updates, was causing it. Eventually, I said what the heck, and went ahead and uploaded Win 10 to my laptop which didn't have as many files as the desktop but does have FP, and it ran like a dream, I had no problems whatsoever. The next day I added it to my desktop, and everything is working fine, all of the recent problems I had were cleared up, I get instant connectivity for all of my programs, and it even has my Windows Media Player, which I had heard was not going to be a part of the Win 10, but I've had absolutely no problems whatsover. About the only thing that was different for me, was getting used to setting the aps for the programs and features that I use but once I learned where the Settings are, I'm fine. 3. Hi, FreeFind is back working for me after about 2 weeks. I guess the problem was with FiOS, but was something out of my control. Regarding the 5,000 limit. I have well over that, but still have a free account. When I reached the limit I requested, and was granted, an increase. This was almost 8 years ago already. I don't know what the current policy is, but I simply asked and was granted the increase. BTW, I don't have any .pdf files on my site. I don't think they are allowed anyway. It is all .html and .jpg. I believe FreeFind's policy is to treat a .pdf of any length as one item. Vanessa At 07:34 AM 1/9/2016, Kabe wrote: >Thanks, Judy! 2. Barry Carlson via
    3. As of January 12, 2016, Microsoft will be ending support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10. This means that those browsers will no longer receive security updates, which will make them more vulnerable to hackers. Internet Explorer 11 will be supported well into the future, as it is capable of running legacy modes of the browser back to and including IE5. The MS Edge browser and IE11 are of course both supported in Windows 10, and I suspect that this move is part of Microsoft's plan to migrate existing MS O/S users to Windows 10. If you use reliable third party security software on Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8.x, then I believe that provided you take reasonable care, use of the older browsers will not get you into trouble. Though if in doubt, download and set as your default browser either, Firefox, Opera or Chrome. There are benefits in doing this, as those modern third party browsers provide support for current CSS features even when operating in older Windows O/S environments. Barry

We were discussing use of different on-site search boxes for personal websites and their features/benefits. Actually, Google Webmaster Tools is NOT "demanding". It simply means learning just how bots actually "see" a webpage and links, just like learning how bots view pages from taking a deeper look into Freefind results (or Pico when I first started). I've learned a lot-- from both FF and G. 2016 and sadly, nothing much changes about how people choose to respond to list mail. You can always Ignore and delete any message rather than being attacking a list member. Have a nice year. Judy

    3. I would like to give the following comparisons of Freefind and Google Webmaster Tools: I will try to match these point by point. But I send separate emails for each one. Google Webmaster Tools - FREE. - Requires code for search box AND a verify string of code provided to you. - Nobody to email for support (but you can use Google Forums for help) - Gives "Google Webmaster Tools". No real search controls; Google expects the User to know how to set up code, such as noindex;nofollow; nocache;nosnippet. (I will discuss more about Webmaster Tools later.) - Indexes an unlimited amount of items. - No need to request higher total indexing. - No "sections" - You can put ALL your freepages websites under one code as if "one site" but get separate reports in Google Webmaster Tools. - No immediate G-report except in Google Webmaster Tools. No email copy. - No email reports. Everything is under one Dashboard at Google Webmaster Tools. - You can study how G sees your site and make corrections. Self-learning, but using Google Webmaster Tools. No real difference; you WILL spot errors and if you are determined, you WILL figure out how to fix the errors. You can always ask the Freepages RW List. - Fixing errors means it must re-index the site, but G reindexes on a schedule. You can request reindexing up to 10x a month; this used to be unlimited. However, G WILL find your stuff. - G expects redirects. Freepages doesn't like redirects. So if you change a file from Mom.jpg to mom_1990.jpg then G will list those files as 404 page not found. This can be aggravating if you do a site overhaul. *Can take G about 3 months to drop off those 404s. - Google Webmaster Tools.shows visitor searches. - Google Webmaster Tools.shows site's keywords. - To get the most out of the features of Google Webmaster Tools, you must get familiar with what it shows you. - Learning what G shows compliments what FF interface shows. See previous email for comparison to Freefind.

Freefind (abbreviated here as FF) - FREE and paid versions. - Requires code for search box. - I believe the man who owns it is called Alan (?). He is very nice to work with if you have a problem. - Has a user Account interface. Allows user some controls. - Limited to 5,000 items (htm, html, jpg, gif, pdf, txt) - But you can request higher amount for total "item" indexing; decided on a case by case basis. - Interface lets you set "sections" for index. - You can list ALL your freepages websites as if "one site". - You can get an immediate FF report after indexing. - You can set up Email reports for indexing and visitor searches. - You can study how FF sees your site and make corrections. Self-learning. No real difference; you WILL spot errors and if you are determined, you WILL figure out how to fix the errors. You can always ask the Freepages RW List. - Fixing errors means it must re-index the site, but you can do reindexing at any time. - FF can use redirects but doesn't demand you use them. Freepages doesn't like redirects. So if you change a file from Mom.jpg to mom_1990.jpg then FF will just drop those files out of your results (unless a link still uses the old filename). It WILL tell you if your site has had a major reduction in files, such as from 3,224 to 3,004. It will send you an email. - Reports show visitor searches. - Reports show site's keywords. - To get the most out of the features of FF's Account interface, you must get familiar with what it shows you. - Learning what FF shows compliments what Google Tools shows. Next email, I will post a comparison for Google Webmaster Tools.

Why wouldn't Google rank results from their search engine before others? What might be helpful to look at is the accuracy of those search results in terms of what you/your visitors might be searching for. Freefind provides a weekly report that tells me not only how many searches were made, but specifically what my visitors were looking for. That helps me to think about what redesign/upgrades to the site are going to be most helpful to my visitors. Pat A.

    3. I have both FreeFind and Google on various websites. Bioth work well but the one difference I see is that the Google one tends to get you better listing rankings in a Google search. At least it's my opinion that it does. I created an entirely new site and used the Google search thingy. Within three days the site was number three in a google search. 3. Vanessa, I, too, can use your Freefind without problem. One way to approach this problem is do nothing and save yourself aggravation. e.g. The whole point is that visitors can use it and we've verified that it works fine. On the other hand, it IS maddening when services we pay to use make decisions for us! Read through this from 2014: https://forums.verizon.com/t5/Fios-Internet/Unable-To-Connect-To-Certain-Websites/td-p/684937 I went through router problems. A hacker could get in a backdoor on a Netgear router and change my IP addresses used to connect to DNS. You could ask verizon to lead you through how to reassign your IPs (new numbers) and lock them into your router. If you do this, make sure you reset the router to factory settings first, then add the new IP addresses, and lock it with 64-byte password encryption. OR... call and complain but then, just trust that freefind is working on your site. Save yourself the worry, time, headache, frustration, irritation, etc. Life is too short. Judy

    3. Vanessa, This note was on the main page of the web site. Maybe this is the problem. "Note: Some small percentage of users on Verizon fios are experiencing intermittent connection issues to our main site and search cluster. Our upstream provider is working with Verizon to resolve this issue." I have rebooted my router, rebouted my desktop and tried my husband's laptop. FreeFind is still not working from either my computer or my husband's, meaning that it must be the network. Most of the links that come up when I Google "FreeFind not working" are FreeFind links and I can't access them. I am getting really frustrated. So far I have not found any other sites that don't work. >From the little I was able to see, it could be a DNS problem with Verizon. Any suggestions as to how I should approach that? 3. Hi Vanessa, I just inserted the code for FreeFind on my website and everything works just fine. Here is the URL to get to their site: https://control.freefind.com/servlet/interactive/control.html This address will take you to the login page.
