Barry, My plan was to take the "genealogy" css that contains the Mobile code and all the different ids and classes you set up a year ago, and just change the images and colors. Since I used that css so much, I hoped I'd still remember how to use most of it. So I tried to plug in your most recent styles into that css file. I think I got most of it put in the right places. I changed the ids in your Styles back to the previously used ones. I had to guess what to do with a couple of your #content a link items, because in the genealogy.css they were all under a section called "links" but not connected to #content. I ran W3 validator on the css. It shows 2 errors: under body, it does not like: background-repeat: repeat; And it says there is a value error on background image for div (dot) hr background-image: ; When you get time, could you look over what I merged together so far and see if you see the issues? Here is the css (looks messy online, sorry) http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/test_with_feb-09-2016.css Here is the page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/test_with_feb-09-2016_css-new.htm The page validates perfectly with the Mobile code added (yay), but I have problems with the display. Examples: Body background does not show. It shows on my computer. But it improved on my PC when I took out the "fixed" line of css. I still cannot get the 2 searches set side by side in a table put in an include. It has an extra "cell" in the right cell. The R-L positioning is bad and the Google image is squished. In the body, the (Latin) text is all bold. (Most of the page text is bold, rather than bold just for titles and highlights.) I'm sure I need to work on my includes but I cannot do more today. Lastly, though it displays a more 'balanced' R/L now, (for me) there is still too much background showing R/L. I'd rather have the outermost border "thinner", like on: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/ I primarily need the content area as wide as possible because I have wide photos and atlas map images that will need most of the content R to L space. Here's an example of one map (family or school photos are often even wider) : http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/atlas/maple-creek-cemetery-before-I-70.html (Other maps are even larger and will cause a right-scroll regardless.) In the footer, my bottom include looks bad but I haven't figured out what's wrong. And I'll need wider hr divider images I think. Thank you, Judy
Judy, > I *like* XP. I haven't been on Windows since Win 3.11 -- yes, a very > long time ago. I'm not sure you wrote what you were thinking of; however XP has been around for a "long time" in Internet terms. I am currently using Windows XP SP3, but have AVG Internet Security installed, and use Firefox 44 and/or Opera 34 as browsers. Firefox 44 is a well secured browser, and I often use it for internet banking. In my part of the planet, the banks are quite particular about which browser versions they will interact with. Barry
Charlie, You can get a good idea of what will happen in a number of mobile devices by going to - http://mobiletst.me ... and selecting a device. http://mobt.me/JzS4 ... shows your page in Landscape mode, and selecting Options and Portrait will give another view. We are using an Emulator, and some devices will allow touch-screen gestures to zoom in/out on images - not available here. Select Devices and Google Nexus 7, will provide a tablet type option. Basically, webpage designs for mobile devices cater in general to optimize the layout, but various devices will allow user gestures to make changes. So there is no guarantee that your layout will remain as expected. Correction to Is that why so much background shows on the left?? I meant, on the right?
Thank you Barry. I have a couple questions. Unsure of the correct wording for this -- On the page online, is the pink-content area expand-collapsable? Is that why so much background shows on the left?? Is there a way to set the content area to be the same size width on every page? I saved your example page and put it in Fp editor. It kept showing no body background--I messed with it for hours with no luck. But when I scrolled down, the background is there, but more than 3/4ths down the page with white space above. How do I make it show offline like it shows online? Judy
I know WinXP / XPPro has been around a long time. I probably didn't write this as clearly as I meant -- I went straight from 3.11 to XP and have never been on or seen any other Windows OS. I'd prefer to continue using XPPro. But last year, they said IE wouldn't be supported (didn't care), now Chrome, which I use, has warnings. I mainly need to easily access gmail, and use Google in an incognito version. I use AVG Free and run Malawarebytes. The bottom line is-- is it absolutely necessary to switch to Windows (10 ?) ? When I tried Firefox last year, I couldn't type in the URL box (top left corner of FF screen -- what IS that box for?). I mainly need the ability to do multiple quick Google searches but without it all saved in history. Judy
Judy, I've removed all attributes from the table tags, and given each table an id, e.g. tblOne, tblTwo and tblThree respectively. The new styles are in the head of the page, and there is a lot more to do to get the page to validate. The background-color you are searching for is #fcf7ee (pale pink), and is now the default background-color for the background-image in #tblOne. http://countjustonce.com/test/florian-pa-1.html You will need to cross-check your existing page with this new one, and make the appropriate changes; then fix up the remainder of the errors. I'm glad someone resurrected this thread. First it was IE ending. Didn't care--I don't use it. NOW, Chrome is stopping support. I *like* XP. I haven't been on Windows since Win 3.11 -- yes, a very long time ago. I don't have money for a new PC (and I'd need a specific kind of PC that costs $$$ ). I'm babying a very old laptop. Physically speaking, it would take me weeks (not hours or days) to do any massive change to OS. I don't have anyone to help do this and can't hire anyone to do it. I have old programs, especially FP editor. And I appreciate simplicity; "click here to do this". I don't have time (or eyesight) to read a book just to know how to use a new-fangled OS. I'm fast running out of time for the free Windows. How can I do it more easily, physically? like, must I back up all programs and files I have on the PC before I even begin?? What are the risks to just keep using XPPro SP3 ? The only "risky" behavior I do once a year is online banking. Ideas?
Barry, I have another short answer -- "BUT" :-) I received an email off-list saying: >I use a 7" Kindle Fire (hand held), the photo sized correctly & I >was able to zoom larger to look at portions of the picture (faces). Charlie, The short answer is"NO". The text will enlarge if required, but the img {max-width:96%} is the controlling factor, and that will display the image width as 96% of the viewport width - even when CTRL + is used. Barry -------------------------- On 06/02/2016 12:25, Charles Dobie via wrote: > Hello, > I have a concern about my images displayed on hand-held devices. > I've > set my css to read "img { max-width: 96%; }" so large images will > shrink down to screen or window width when the viewport is smaller > than > the image. > I also have "<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, > initial-scale=1">" at the start of each html file containing > images. > This seems to work, as the images shrink to fit when I change the > window sizes on my computer, but I don't have a hand-held device > to > test on. > What I need to know is, does my css code "img { max-width: 96%; }" > freeze the size of each image to the width of the viewport? When Barry Carlson helped me with my freepages "genealogy" site, I spent a year converting the "genealogy" and "family" sites. Other than problems with nested lists, overall it turned into a pleasant change (though with lots of hard work). I couldn't have gotten past typing my name without Barry, Pat G, Pat A, Ralph and others on this list. I took the last several months off for a well-deserved css/html vacation. But now I'm ready to tackle my PAGenWeb site. I've tried before and failed. So, hat in hand, could someone help me over the first hurdle? I figured if I used Barry's css from "genealogy", it'd be easiest to plug in images and colors, *especially* because that css file contains the Mobile code and ALL the table types and do-dads I'd need to build any website. BUT-- I am already lost trying to do the 3-border layout. What I'm trying to mimic --- Of all the color combos tried before *without external CSS), I like the layout and colors the best on this non-css page::: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/migration-biographies/ohio/mahoning-co-ohio/boardman/reed_james.htm I don't like how table (border) #3 (innermost) leaves so much exposed border on Table-Border #1. I do like the thinness of the hint of border between outermost and innermost. Just trying to deconstruct this page, I get lost. I feel stupid, but here's the first question--- What IS the image filename or color hex# used for the centermost content area on the page url I gave above? that light pinkish color... No matter what I pick from the code, I can't identify the right thing. And I can't get it to display from the new css file. Second, does that image or color get plugged into table 3 for content area? And, just where in the css do I plug it in? What line am I looking for?? Could someone explain just what we did to get that thin border on the 2nd inner border, between 1-outermost and 3-content? And, how do I get less space showing on the outermost border, so content is wider? I'm getting lost between all the css-attempted files. Worse, I have some files from before already attached to x.css and some to xx.css files that were attempted in the past. I really want to get this site cleaned up, reorganized, and converted so I can just add content. I'll upload the new page and new css tomorrow evening after I delete some old files from online. Hello, Sorry about the overflowed link in the previouis message. Please use this shorter one: http://tinyurl.com/haggojf Many thanks, Charles Dobie, [email protected]
Hello, I have a concern about my images displayed on hand-held devices. I've set my css to read "img { max-width: 96%; }" so large images will shrink down to screen or window width when the viewport is smaller than the image. I also have "<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">" at the start of each html file containing images. This seems to work, as the images shrink to fit when I change the window sizes on my computer, but I don't have a hand-held device to test on. What I need to know is, does my css code "img { max-width: 96%; }" freeze the size of each image to the width of the viewport? In other words, can the user zoom into the image to enlarge it on the screen to view part of the image? If the images are frozen at viewport width, then how do I prevent this? My website is 99% images, so showing tiny images of large photos is useless. For example, if you're using a hand-held device, please look at this page -- [1]http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cdobie/bryk-hudson-b ay-staff-1955.htm Does your device allow you to zoom in on the faces of the people in the photo? I wondered if someone might mind helping me change an image? This is not for genealogy but another project I'm doing. I have Photoshop but I'm not familiar with the tools and how to use them. The image has a white background, showing 2 people in a bed with a high frame and with 2 steps attached to the bed. I need these things done to it: 1. Change the lit room to darkened, like evening or a darker background. 2. Obliterate / remove the man's figure lying in the back of the bed (the one that has a beard) (his pillows can go too), but still have the "bed" and sides of the wood bed frame remain as clear as possible. 3. Add some longer than shoulder-length hair to the other figure lying in the front of the bed so it looks more clearly like a women. As long as she looks female, I'd be happy. 4. Obliterate / remove the 2 steps at the bottom of the bed. 5. Darken the floor a little to make it match better with evening or darker light coming into the room. I tried to use a healing brush on it, but my hand shakes too much to make even brushstrokes across the areas. (I obliterated areas but they look jagged and uneven. Plus, it blurred the bed's top frame -- which I don't want to happen.) Mine is not useable. If anyone can help me with this project, I can send the image tonight. Thank you, Judy
