On October 26, 2015, you wrote me the directions for my new Web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wilkesbaptistmins . Good morning from a sunny France, RW hasn't fixed lots of stuff. Could we know what is now working normally, and what items don't yet - what items may not in the future, if any? If the counter worked before the outage, and you made no website changes, then the HelpDesk staff doesn't get the difference. If you made no page changes, and it worked before the outage, write back to them and say "Please report this to the sole technician responsible for Rootsweb / Freepages website issues::: The RW counter that worked before the outage stopped working after Rootsweb ran the backups for all web spaces housed under Rootsweb. Nothing was changed to the local or live site by the webmaster." But then, I'd go find a different counter, because RW hasn't fixed lots of stuff. OR, choose what lots of us decided a long time ago:: just stop using any counter on your pages. Freefind or Google Webmaster Tools tells you site and page stats without using an image counter. Judy

Yesterday most of it was back, except that it was a very old archived page which I had extensively changed and enlarged over the last half year. I was unable to log on to upload the new pages updates. This morning, IT WORKS!! I could log on and upload the new! So looks like we are back in business. Judy, When you are talking about the "border", you are effectively meaning the left/right "space" between the text and the table border. That is "padding", and you can reduce it, and at the same time increase the width. Or, if you want the available content area to be 800px, then declare that as the width, and left/right padding added will become the "space" between the "content" and the border. The CSS file I sorted out is at:- http://countjustonce.com/test/florian-pa-test.css When you post a page, I am not aware of what FP includes are in it. Judy, Going back to to your original post:- http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Freepages-Help/2016-02/1455070067 ... the page you provided may have been OK in FP and validated, but if we are going to use CSS, all the non-conforming stuff, e.g. <font></font>,<p align="center"> etc.. needs to be removed. As all that mark-up over-rides the CSS styles from the external file, or those in the head of the page. More importantly, why the fixation on the outer table? That table can be replaced with a div (or 2 divs) depending on how you want to style the borders. The content div width is made up 3 things, e.g. the declared width, plus left/right padding, and left/right border-width. Which means that if the following CSS is used:- #content { width: 690px; padding: 0 30px border: ridge 2px #aaa; } ... the overall width of the #content div is 754px, or in your terms 754/1006=75%; where the screen-width resolution is 1024px - 18px for the scrollbar. So the actual available width for your added content is 690px. I have reformatted the CSS file you sent, and that took an hour, but its now readable. You can make a start by cleaning up the page, then use the above example to get the initial page layout corrected. Don't worry about the FreeFind & Google search forms; I have a new mark-up/layout and independent CSS for them. Judy, As Barry says, you can increase the padding of your content area to accommodate your maps, etc. However, this will not affect the appearance of your background image, which repeats rather untidily across the screen, and which cuts in half the image on the right-hand side. Of course, you may not be concerned about this, but I've found that even with smaller patterns which are less noticeable I can sometimes detect a hard line at the edges which at best can be irritating, and at worst give an unprofessional appearance to the site. That is why I suggested that, instead of having a continuous background you restrict your images to the left and right-hand side of the screen, as Barry has also suggested. Also, you say you have Photoshop. Why then do you not utilise this to its full potential and create your own backgrounds, over which you have much more control?
