    3. Earlier questions related to a problem with the RootsWeb counter not showing up on their website. I had a similar problem yesterday when I updated my site's index page, where I have my counter. All I did to solve the problem was to put .ancestry into the counter location, as in RootsWeb.ancestry.com Best wishes, Walt

    3. Hi Barry, Thanks for your prompt reply. I had copied the script from the index page on my Sussex web site, which works perfectly well. However, this background pattern is a repeating one (150 x 112px), which made me think that it was the size of the Bolton background that was causing the problem. I had to make it this length, i.e. 1200 px, as it is a gradient pattern, and making it smaller would have resulted in ugly seams down its length. 3. I wonder if someone could look at my index page and advise me what to do as regards the background image, which appears to conflict with the Rootsweb banner. I haven't run up against this problem before, and think it might be to do with the dimensions (i.e. 140 x 1200 px) rather than a repeating pattern, but don't know how to fix it. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/index.html Valerie

    3. Actually, The Wayback Machine suggests people submit a site URL. So fix up your site(s) and submit the URL(s) for the main page(s), and you'll be indexed from then after.

    3. For those of you who have not received it yet, RootsWeb started sending the following notice to Freepages users today: "As you may know, the RootsWeb site was recently unavailable as the result of a hardware failure in our datacenter. Our development and web operations teams worked diligently and carefully to address the issues, and as a result, the site is now available again. "Regretfully, despite their best efforts, our teams were not able to retrieve all of the data associated with the site. Specifically, we were unable to retrieve content from FreePages added after the summer of 2015. We understand these pages are important to you and are very sorry that we are not able to recover the data that was lost as a result of the hardware failure. Going forward, we are adding additional technical resources to support the site and ensure such an issue does not occur again. "If you have a backup of your own please upload it to the site so that you have the most current version of your pages. "If you have any concerns, please contact our Member Services through our support form. "The RootsWeb Team " Freepages-Help list members constantly encourage everyone to be sure to keep a copy of any pages you upload to your Freepages account on your own computer so you can restore any loss resulting from a server failure. If you uploaded something and forgot to make a copy for yourself, check the Wayback Machine at <https://archive.org/web/> or the Google Cache at <http://cachedview.com> Neither site archives everything, but you may luck out and be able to find a copy of your page there. Is anyone else having this problem?? Jim, There are really only two ways you can get sp*m from a RootsWeb server: 1) You are a list admin and the mail is being sent to your Admin address, or 2) A member of a list has let their computer be hacked, and it is being used to send out sp*m or malware unknown to them. In the first case, mail sent to admins is not filtered because one of admin's jobs is to help members understand and how to deal with sp*m. In case #2, someone has probably opened an unexpected attachment, even though they have been warned not to open attachments from people they don't know. Sp*mrs have become much more sophisticated and emails containing malware can LOOK legitimate. On this list, a member whose computer has been compromised is immediately unsubscribed so they can not continue to send mails to the list, and they are not allowed to resubscribe until they verify that their computer has been cleaned. 3. That's pretty kewl, and much better than I imagined :-) Another thank-you to Barry for all his help getting that site converted to CSS and mobile. So what if a picture was double or triple the width of that bus-schedule image? Would you still be able to stretch / unstretch? Or should I use that image script to reduce the image on all screens (the script that enlarges the pic when you touch the pic)? Would a bigger picture still work on a cell if I use that script? Judy

    3. Judy, I don't use a cellphone for web access either, but please note there is no "mouseover" on touch screens because there is no mouse. All that functionality is lost. If you google "css cell phone" (without the quotes) you'll get lots of hits, all of which seem like interesting reading. Good luck! So would cell owners who also know web design please comment to my questions? What is the smallest font that is comfortable reading on a cellphone? For example, in footers I've often used a size="2" font. I think that's either an MS 8 or 10 point. How hard is that to see on a cell? When a website has a large picture, if you are on a cellphone would you abandon the page or move around the image if you had to? What if the image is made small on the webpage but enlarges when you put your mouse on it? Both would require you moving about-- which way is better? Note: These are family portraits that cannot be reduced further. I've been removing all my font tags, but I'd like to know what is best to view on a cell before I start putting in CSS "small" tags. And if the mouseover on images is bad on cellphones, I don't want to spend all the time converting the images with that special code. Thanks for your comments. Judy
