It takes a while for Google "bots" to make the rounds and collect the new data. The same goes for any of the other search engines. After the hardware failure, many of us had to reupload our sites. If you want to be extra sure your site is back to pristine after you did a site overhaul--but it was not included in RW's backup-- you can do these steps: 1. Go to File Manager (Rootsweb sites, or Freepages sites - just google for the right one) 2. Click a radio button on a folder in your site. Go down and click Delete directory / subdirectory (left side). Repeat for each directory. 3. Click a radio button on a file in your site. Go down and click Delete file (right side). Repeat for each file-- except, leave your "index.htm" or html (just to make it still feel like home). 4. Go to top and refresh directory. Then, use Filezilla and re-upload everything from your local (PC) website version.. Click to Overwrite your index page. During a site update last year, I had reorganized, deleted pages, moved stuff around, got rid of duplicate images, etc. After the failure, I found my OLD site was returned from the backup. The above steps were the quickest and least confusing way to get rid of the old site *fast*, and reupload the new site again. Took about 20 minutes total to do both tasks. Judy

Here's why. Freepages accounts were designed so you could have multiple URLs with only one account, e.g. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com etc. Your actual account location is http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/userID/genealogy_html/ That URL redirects to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/ Pat Geary has written an explanation including illustrations <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/freepages-directory-structure.html> Pat A.
I had to reload what I had changed this year which happened to be extensive and it went pretty smoothly (replacing the older appearing files with my copies of what I had changed). I wonder if their folder structure names have changed. I note that because my stuff is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~barbaracox/ etc etc and I noted someone's mention of trying: Finding Host users.freepages.rootsweb.com ... maybe try the format users.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ (~yoursitename-here) ? Pat Asher probably can provide a better answer but I would imagine you are going to have to wait until things are back to normal with Rootsweb since their backup appears not to have the information on your site and you cannot create a new one cause that part of their site is not working. Pat A. has given the accounts address to retrieve account details. Let me review a few other things: 1. Search your email box for the Rootsweb Welcome letter you got when you signed up. *I copied the message and sent mine back to myself with a Subject I can easily find. And I made copies offline. 2. Make sure if you copy info from the email that there is NO space before or after. TYPE the info, don't copy if your copying failed the first time. OR paste your password into Windows Notepad and copy it from there (with no spaces). 3. Some passwords are in MiXeD cAse and MUST be entered exactly as shown. #2 and #3 are unforgiving. One tiny mistake will keep you out of your site. When I was new, I didn't understand these points and was upset when I could not "get in". But if you do as Pat directed to get the info sent to you, then follow the steps above, you'll have a better chance to succeed in accessing your site. Then IF it doesn't work and you have to contact Rootsweb, you'll be able to state what you already tried. Judy

Connie, Whether or not you have uploaded anything to the misc_html directory, that is the default directory for your URL, i.e. <http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~connietooley/> That URL indicates the page/site does not exist so it appears your userID (connietooley) is not correct. Are you still using the same email address you used to create your Freepages account? If so, go to passwordcentral.rootsweb.ancestry.com to retrieve your userID (and password). If you have changed emails, you will need to notify [email protected] so they can update the email address associated with your account. Pat A.

Lonnie, all I can think of at this point is that you have a firewall that is preventing the connection. It could be either your AV firewall or your router. Check the settings in your AV program to be sure you have given WS_ftp access rights. Be sure WS_FTP is set to Passive (PASV) transfers. If that doesn't correct the problem, copy the session log from WS_FTP and post it here. Pat A.

It was what I had. the name is >connietooley. and password is First, NEVER send your password to a public mailing list. The Freepages-Help list is archived and anyone could find it and hack your account now or some time in the future. Write to [email protected], explain you posted it in mistake, and ask that it be changed. Next, if your account was created mid-year or later last year, it may not have existed in the back up they were able to restore, and the account may need to be created on the server again, even though the record for it apparently appears in the account logs. You will need to ask [email protected] about this as well. Pat Asher
After the recent rootsweb hiccup, I am unable to FTP into my homepages/freespace account, I have been informed all my freepages links are not working! I check a couple the link failed! I requested password central the passwords but that didn't fix it, I verified the connection parameters via the email from password central and Ws_Ftp On both getting error message via ws_ftp Error response from server Connection closed by remote host What do I do next? Valerie, The top position of the left and right backgrounds has changed by 8px, and I'm not sure why. In the script at the bottom of the page you will find the following:- if(location.host != "freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com"){topPos = 8;lftOS = 142;rgtOS = wrap+8;}else{topPos = 58;lftOS = 149;rgtOS = wrap+1;}; Carefully remove the above, then replace with the following:- if(location.host != "freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com"){topPos = 0;lftOS = 142;rgtOS = wrap+8;}else{topPos = 50;lftOS = 149;rgtOS = wrap+1;}; You will note that topPos = 8; and topPos = 58; have both been reduced by 8px.
