Freepages-help traffic is sporadic depending on whether someone has a question or problem. Freepages users are allowed only one account, so if you already have one, you can not request a new one. If you have your userID and password, try logging in using File Manager <http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman> If you can login there, then your account still exists. Some users have reported that http:// access was disabled on their account and when they checked with the HelpDesk ( email: [email protected] ), were told that suspicious files were found in their account so it was disabled until the bad files were removed. You can do that using File Manager. Once they confirm the account's files are clean, they will enable http:// access again so you and others can see your site at http://freepages.xxxx.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~userID/ Pat A.

    1. [FreeHelp] ANY IDEAS ON GETTING MY WEB PAGE REPOSTED TO FREE PAGES?
    2. vtoole via
    3. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my web page reposted to the free pages. My computer engineer son was home this weekend. He took a look at the situation. We still could not get any results. We put it up in September and it was not restored after rootsweb.com for the most part had been back up and running again after the recent crash. My son does more computer hardware and does not do much anymore with software. Was able to get my account to more or less work. It says I am subscribed to 42 e-mail lists and that I have a free pages space. I was able to get back my user name and password on the free page space. Yet the page I get up says it can't be found. When I tried to start over and subscribe to a new space, I got a computer error on rootsweb.com part. At least that is what it looked like. I am getting a few more postings from the e-mail lists. Not nearly has many as a few years ago when I would get a dozen or more every day. Vivian Cates, Alto, Texas 1-936-858-3801

    3. Whether it would still be a problem later is anyone's guess. But sometimes, you have to force PCs and websites to do what you want. For example, Filezilla on my sites SAYS it deletes files/folders from RW/freepages. But something with RW still keeps old stuff. File Manager is more direct to RW-- it seems to accept "delete" better from there. I dunno why. I just found it easier to work around the issue than keep banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out.

    3. Check the settings in your FTP client. It may be changing the read/write permissions when you upload, thus preventing you from overwriting your own file(s) the next time you try to upload. I just can't get it to upload with my other page changes. JFlorian, I have not used file manager in many years. I suppose I could delete and replace the page one time using File Manager, but then the next time I try to update the website wouldn't I have the same problem with this album page not updating? Thanks for the suggestions, Cindy Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Restoring missing pages Hi Cindy, Looking at the page source I notice that for the last two album images you have not included the the link to the file, i.e. <td><a href="../nameoffile.html <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~holdridge/census/holdridgecensus.html> " Could it be this that's causing the problem? Nothing seems to work. I know that it was on the site in October, I checked the Way Back site. I did not make any changes to the code before I tried to upload it again. Can someone please take a look at this URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~holdridge/albums/photoalbum.html on the Way Back machine, October 13, 2015 and tell me if you see anything in the code that would cause a probem now trying to upload it? On the bottom row of album images, the middle one is labelled "Fork Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery" and should link to this page, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~holdridge/cemetery/forkshoals/forkshoals.html On my live updated website, the album page still looks like this, without the label and link. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~holdridge/albums/photoalbum.html But the Fork Shoals Cemetery page did update. 1. Re: [FreeHelp] GEDCOM
    2. rt-sails via
    3. Pat A is correct. The most recent version of the GEDCOM standard is 5.5. More than twenty years later, it seems unlikely that consensus among all the stakeholders could be achieved to update the standard. The idea of GEDCOM was to avoid a "Tower of Babel" syndrome. It was to provide a common language that all genealogy software could understand and translate into the software's own idiom. However, the standard dates to before the advent of new media types and does not support these "bells and whistles". In response, software designers added proprietary extensions and called them "GEDCOM". Because they are proprietary (secret information), extensions for one program are not transferable to other programs. In some instances, proprietary extensions can bollix up GEDCOM import to a different program. So many errors are encountered that import can fail completely. The problem, Vanessa, isn't that your genealogy software doesn't meet new standards. It's that -- for these features -- there are no generally-accepted standards. -rt_/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2016 11:07:20 -0400 From: Pat Asher <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Adding photos to WorldConnect To: Vanessa Stern <[email protected]> Cc: Freepages-Help <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed At 09:57 AM 4/22/2016, Vanessa Stern wrote: >My situation regarding genealogy software is complicated. Vanessa, The GEDCOM standard has remained the same since 1996. If Generations added proprietary extensions to their GEDCOM output, those would not import to another program, but the standard tagged data should transfer just fine to another program. Remember, a GEDCOM is a plain text file. You can even read and edit it in Notepad if you understand/learn the correct line structure and remember to add the appropriate meta tag to each line. That said, checking 125,000 individuals for proprietary data would be a nightmare. >Anyway, could I do this via a post-em? You could enter the URL of a photo in a post-em, but the photo would not display there, nor would the typed link be a hot link; at least I don't think the post-em feature will execute html as will the main display. If your GEDCOM really does need some finessing, maybe someone on the list uses a Mac and could help you with it. Pat A.
