Yvonne, Stick with Filezilla. The problems are not yours. To avoid all the pitfalls - created by Rootsweb I must say: In Filezilla Open File/Site Manager - (you've probably done this a million times before!) Use SFTP Host: sitesuser.rootsweb.com - Watch the spelling they don't make it easy - they are technocrats not humans! Logon is Normal User and Password as yours. BUT rootsweb has acknowledged their password system was rubbish. So before you start - go to here (AGAIN!!) https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword [https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword] and change your password to at least 13 characters, one number and one character like ! # ) ( Even though you've probably done it ten+ times before, as I have! But I'm now working! Wait at least 15 minutes. Then try and login to your old pages with Filezilla: http://sites.rootsweb.com/~your username/index.html (index bit not totally necessary) Give it another 10 mins and try again. Give me an email if you're stuck. Yvonne, You posted the following url - http://sites.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/norcallib.html - which worked! Please check carefully the FTP data you posted, especially the ybowers versus yvonne. Cindy, You have been lucky! Reading everything carefully and noting the "go to" bits has obviously worked for you. For those who are still having trouble, Anne Mitchell has posted that those who used the original 10 - 11 character password, and were successful, will need to reset their password once more, i.e. [https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/changePassword?requestId=.....] Passwords must be between 10 and 32 characters long, and must contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one of the following special characters: _ ! & @ # ( ) Asterisk (*) is not an accepted character. Perserverance is a virtue! Barry
Thank you all for the directions and updates about logging in to FileZilla. I have used it for several years to upload to my freepages and love it. I have a 12 character password (the only one since requesting my site to come back online), the newest version of FileZilla, and the information provided regarding all the correct settings to use. I was able to log on with my first attempt. I intend to wait to update my site until all the bugs are worked out. Thank you again for all the clarifications! Cindy Blankenship Sent from my iPhone
Not sure if it will work or not as a fp include since the favicon statement goes in the head section. Remember FP only adds what is in between the opening and closing body tag. I add it as part of the DWT which is only available for fp2003 and EW. ----- Thanks Pat. I'll just put up with it, I guess.
Hi Wayne, Did you see a message from Anne earlier today saying that folks who can't sign in should change their passwords? Judy
Before I start here's a little information on me. I retired after 50 years working in the IT industry first starting with military computers using tubes. Next with a major computer company working with medium and large scale main frame computers. Next came servers, both Novel and Microsoft along with pc's and laptops. I have worked in both the hardware and software side for fifty years. I never seen a screw up as large as Ancestry has done with the Rootsweb servers. The first mistake was taken the running Rootsweb servers down ( yes they may have had security problems but they have been there for years ) before they had the new system up and running with all the major systems tested and working at least 95%. It looks like nothing was tested before letting users try to connect back their webpages. The reply link for changing passwords was/is still incorrect. (missing a period in the password reset link) [ https://useraccountrootsweb.com/websites/changePassword?requestId=..... ] should be [ https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/changePassword?requestId=..... ]. When you finally get connected and change the password, it seems a lot of users ( including me ) still cannot connect to the sftp servers in order to make changes to their webpages. There have been a lot of different ideals posted here on how to connect to the sftp servers but they do not seem to be working for a lot of users ( including me ). Not sure if this because of the password or a sftp connection problem. I have been using filezilla to connect to Rootsweb for many years but have also tried cuteftp plus other ftp programs but still cannot connect. Although I can connect to my website ( https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wlsetzer<https://sites.rootsweb.com/%7Ewlsetzer> ) I notice that the SSI's ( <!--#include virtual="./ssi_header.txt" --> ) that have been working for years is not working. Did they switch webservers from what was being used to different webserver software meaning we will have to switch the SSI's format. Not sure what else is not working on my webpages at this time. I understand our rootsweb websites are a FREE service and we cannot expect a lot but 7 months is a very long time for the servers to be down. It really makes one wander if one would want to use the payed services from Ancestry. Thanks for letting me sound off. Wayne Setzer wsetzer@hotmail.com<mailto:wsetzer@hotmail.com>

Thank you Anne, That was it. I used one character that was not in the instructions and apparently wasn't allowed. It can take up to 10 to 15 minutes for your password changes to get updated in the system. So try it again now. And if it doesn't work, then go reset your password. SFTP and sftp are the same thing.
