One of the significant costs in running FreeBMD is network bandwidth, which is charged by the volume of traffic, and a major component of that is downloading scans. There are three ways of downloading scans: firstly by the link from the entry information page, secondly via "View Images" on the home page and finally, for transcribers, from http://images.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/. FreeBMD policy is that downloading from GUS is for the purpose of transcribing but FreeBMD does not object if transcribers use GUS for downloading for their own research (instead of using "View Images") provided the use is moderate. Possibly as a result of recent publicity about how to do multiple downloads from GUS we are finding individuals downloading large numbers of scans. As a result we have put a limit on the number of downloads from GUS, the limits being 100 in 24 hours or 30 in one hour. Limits for syndicate coordinators are double these values. These limits should not inhibit anyone using GUS for the purpose for which it is provided but if there is someone who needs to download more than this we will see if we can accommodate them. Please let me know if you have such a requirement. Barrie --Certified Virus Free by 4SecureMail.com ICSA-Certified Scanner--
