    1. Image servers
    2. david mayall
    3. As co-ords will be aware, we have been suffering problems with image downloads for several weeks. The cause of this has been the loss of one of the two servers that provide image downloads. Unfortunately, the server that failed was the server that is generally more reliable, and for a number of weeks, we have been limping along with a single image server that was becoming more flaky and tempremental by the hour. Immediately after the failure of the second server, we ordered two new servers, and those servers have now been installed and commissioned. Before we make them live, we would like to ensure that they are performing properly, and it would be appreciated if co-ords could test the servers from both the public and transcriber interfaces; http://images2.freebmd.org.uk/GUS http://images3.freebmd.org.uk/GUS http://images2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl http://images3.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl Could any co-ordinators finding problems please let me know as soon as possible -- Dave Mayall

    3. I have been expecting for a week or so to see a query about the March update, due to start 23rd UK time, that still seems not to have started a week later - also UK time. Is there a software issue that holds it up? Has the hand-off taken place yet? I have had a couple of info requests from transcribers expecting to see their data uploaded and so far it hasn't, obviously because the March rebuild seems not to have started. 3. It was downloading and/or trying to install WinBMD. She never even got as far as starting to transcribe. It happened twice, as she made two attempts on different days, as I understand it. I don't think we need worry about it unduly. It is possible that some other setting on the computer was not right, like User account or administrator status or what cookies were accepted, and the 'security' software converted a standard windows vista response into something that appeared to show that it was doing a useful job.... The transcriber concerned has decided not to continue, anyway. 1. Dudley Volume
    2. Jeremy Hakes
    3. Having just started my Syndicate on 1937 Births, I noticed that Dudley appears to be showing as Volume 6c whereas previous advise was that it had changed Volume from 6c to 6b in 1913. A quick investigation - not yet fully confirmed reveals that there appears to have been a further Volume change starting from the June 1935 quarter back to 6c. So we have 1 Jan 1852 to 31 Dec 1912 - Volume 6c 1 Jan 1913 to 31 Mar 1935 - Volume 6b 1 Apr 1935 to 31 Jun 1946 - Volume 6c 1 Jul 1946 to 31 Mar 1965 - Volume 9d 1 Apr 1965 to 31 Mar 1974 - Volume 9b 1 Apr 1974 onwards - Volume 33 Nothing in this email should detract from TWYS. Just a warning to be vigilent Jeremy Hakes Co-Ordinator All Scan Deputy Co-ordinator for the District Aliasing Team.

    1. Prevention of Duplicate Registrations by Volunteers
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. Co-ordinator Colleagues Help me to help you! A further polite reminder due to continuing problems with duplicate registrations. I've just had to deal with yet another instance of a volunteer setting up a duplicate registration. This causes additional work for both myself and hence eventually Co-ordinators when they have to delete/enter volunteers details into their Syndicates. Our computer boffins have provided facilities to enable me to quickly identify possible duplicate registrations. New volunteers to FreeBMD register via the registration page at: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/join?coord=****** To assist the administration process and prevent duplicate registrations by volunteers the following message greet volunteers when they reach the registration page. We have even changed the wording over time to align with comments received from volunteers who had set up duplicate registrations. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** Welcome to the FreeBMD Registration. Volunteers only require one SubmitterID regardless of the number of Syndicates they belong to. If you have previously transcribed for FreeBMD please continue to use your existing SubmitterID even if you intend to join another Syndicate or have been inactive for a long period of time. If you have forgotten your SubmitterID or your password, if you have changed your email address, or if you experience any problems involving your registration, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator with details of the problem. SubmitterIDs are retained on the system regardless of how long ago transcription activity was last carried out by a volunteer using the ID. The administration team are able to locate a SubmitterID based on minimal information. Failure to heed this advice will cause additional work and incovenience for the administration team and yourself. To register as a NEW FreeBMD Submitter please fill in the form below and click on Register You will be sent an email to confirm your registration within the next 12 hours. It is vital that you supply the correct email address. If you haven't received the email within 12 hours please check in your SPAM folder in case it has been delivered there in error, this is particularly important if your ISP is AOL Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator if you do not receive an email to confirm your registration; do NOT attempt to re-register. ***************************************************************************************************************************************************** (Note: There's a clickable link from Volunteer Coordinator to vol-coord@freebmd.org.uk .) Despite our best endeavours, volunteers are still continuing to set up duplicate registrations for whatever reasons. This involves quite a bit of administration effort to resolve the problem. To resolve this problem at source it would be appreciated if Co-ordinators could mention to their new volunteers "if they already have a SubmitterID they do not need to set up another". If any Co-ordinator is NOT advising their potential new volunteers about this aspect could they please let me know why this should be so? The fact volunteers are joining another Syndicate or have changed their email address/name does not a require a new SubmitterID. An email by volunteers or Co-ordinators to Volunteer Coordinator at: vol-coord@freebmd.org.uk can resolve 100% of problems involving registrations. Regards Allan Raymond

    3. Richard, I was responsible for sending out this message. I am sorry that it has caused offence but it is drawing the transcriber's attention to a statement of fact ... if the transcriber goes to their File Management page they will find that the file is now marked with a red Errors box and has hence been excluded from the update. It is thus very different from correction requests sent out by Kevin. I would also point out that it would be possible to reply to this message so in that sense it is not anonymous. Please would you indicate if Allan's proposed amendment to the wording would not cause offence and I will change the process to use that in future. Barrie Richard Oliver wrote: > Normally when a flaw is identified in a volunteer's uploaded file, he or she receives a very polite and civilised note from the FreeBMD Corrections Coordinator, Kevin Howell, pointing out the details of the error and requesting it be rectified.
