    3. A new recruit to my Syndicate, quite promising in all other respects, has a computer operating with Linux (whatever that may be) and is using "LinBMD" for transcribing. I have normal Windows Vista and WinBMD. The upshot is that I am unable to open a file sent to me for checking, and cannot use BMDVerify on it. Can anyone suggest a solution for this incompatibility, or must I tell the person concerned to get lost? Richard Oliver Syndicate Co-ordinator Madrid, Spain richol@arrakis.es

    3. Hi All Scan2 has several Linux users and has no problems with them. Don't abandon him/her you can transfer to Scan2 if it would be easier. The problem lies with the end of line indication in the files. 3. Hi Chris, I have instructions on the use of MacBMD at the FreeLoaders web site : http://web.mac.com/mchughton/FreeLoaders/FirstPageM.html and you are welcome to use these at any time. How to fill in the Header details are included which will answer the second part of the problem. The first part of the problem is easy for them to fix, if a little laborious. Above the transcription section the completed lines are visible in text form. Your transcriber will need to go through each line delete the comma and insert in the correct place. How this has happened is more of a mystery as the inserting is done by tabbing from the highlighted field. The district field would have '5b' so I am not sure how they have managed to leave the b out and add it to the next field. I am happy to deal direct with your transcriber on this if it makes it easier. Cheers, Tony McHugh Free Loaders. 3. Hi I'm looking for some advice re MacBMD I have a new transcriber who is using MacBMD, and they have just completed their first page, in which I noticed two main problems with the page, but not having a Mac myself, I don't know how to help them fix the problems. The first, minor problem is that they have somehow included part of the volume number of every district in with the page number instead (sample from first entry is Stoke Damerel 5, b288) And the second problem is that the page came with no headers at all. They did say they had a problem with this when starting the page in that they didn't know what, and how to enter them. (I can assist with the what once I know the how) Any suggestions on what I can say to the person. Or would I be better of referring them to someone who knows about MacBMD (if so, who). Thanks

    1. Wording of TKB 6(d) confusing?
    2. Nowl
    3. Hello everyone I know our marvellous FreeBMD admins have more than enough work to do, but could I please make a suggestion to put on the list for the next time the TKB is updated? Recently several of my volunteers have been confused by the wording of TKB 6(d) on how to handle handwritten amendments. In these cases, an entire line was crossed through; the pages had two handwritten late entries referring to the same person, one of which was crossed out. The deleted line should have been included, following TKB 6(z): "Include the entry and then in the line underneath put: #COMMENT Entry crossed through. " http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6z But the volunteers found 6(d) and thought this applied: "If the original entry is crossed out, transcribe the entry with the amendment and add comment such as: #COMMENT handwritten amendment of crossed out page number XXX" http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6d I think 6(d)'s use of "entry" in the phrase "if the original ENTRY is crossed out" (my emphasis) is what confused people; they thought it meant the whole record, when what it's talking about is an amendment to a field (page number in the example). 6(z) is clear, mentioning "all the fields" being crossed out, but unfortunately 6(d) gets seen first :-) Might it be a good idea for 6(d) to include a sentence such as "If the entire line is crossed out, see 6(z)"? And/or for "field" to be substituted for "entry" in the first mention? I'd be glad to hear what others think. -- Nowl

    3. At the bottom of the second column of page 1931B4-B-0093 there is an unusual entry with what appears to be extra data below it. I can't find anything similar in TKB, though it may have come up in the lists in the past. Jeff

    1. Multiple entry correction - how should it be handled
    2. Susan & Martin Hawkins
    3. Hello Help !! One of my transcribers sent this and I would like some advice as to how it should be handled please. I've got a nice one on 1936B1-W-B499, second column. The surname "Wyard" has been 'ditto-ed' 46 times, but then the first ditto has been crossed out and the surname "Wyatt" has been written in by hand. There are also small hand-written ditto marks under the hand-written 'Wyatt' name. I feel there is no doubt that the 46 entries should by Wyatt and not Wyard. I have placed a comment thus: COMMENT(46) "DITTO" MARK FOR SURNAME IS CROSSED OUT AND REPLACED BY "WYATT" This is factually correct but perhaps not helpful for potential users and I think it would probably be better to simply type WYATT for the surname. Any suggestions please? What about changing my comment to. COMMENT(46) SURNAME ORIGINALLY SHOWN AS WYARD Cheers Sue Coordinator of The Recordsmiths Syndicate of volunteer transcribers working for FreeBMD. 1. Re: WinBMD & Vista
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. I suspect that in the last week or so an update of something (either Windows or maybe some 'security' software) may have made WinBMD on Vista more unpredictable, and I had one of these mystery error messages appear a few days ago after running WinBMD on Vista successfully for months. One of my transcribers has similarly run into problems last week after having none for months. That is with 'run time error 429 Active X component can't create object'. Suggestions, for what they are worth: 1) Install as administrator and with User Account Control On 2) Tell people not to try to use WinBMD after installing it until after restarting their computer. 3) If you do get a problem, start WinBMD using 'Run as Administrator' after right-mouse-click on the WinBMD icon, then confirm it is a safe program that you trust. 4) Then try to run it as normal. It does happen that new transcribers get put off because of problems installing WinBMD. Often these are transcribers whose computer knowledge is insufficient to explain the problem clearly or to follow advice to put it right. Thinking outside the box, is it (a) feasible and (b) desirable to have a list of experienced FreeBMD volunteers in various parts of the world who might be able to advise people by phone in their area? Only once have I offered my phone number to a new transcriber having difficulties getting started, and that was some years ago, but he has clocked up well over 100,000 entries since. Another idea 'outside the box'. Get people to try installing some other free download software such as Irfanview or XnView or EditPad Lite and see if that gives them any problems. They may have a generic problem with their computer installing anything. Co-ordinators are advised in advance of any volunteer to be deleted from the database and given a nominal two weeks in which to respond. (Note: Any Co-ordinator who doesn't wish to receive the advance notification is quite welcome to advise me of this requirement, in fact it saves me some work - see list at bottom of "opt" out Co-ordinators) Co-ordinators are requested to check their "Syndicate Maintenance" for details of any volunteers deleted by me as explained in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/delete_submitterID.html . The deleted volunteers are shown at the bottom of the "Current Submitters" window of the Maintain Syndicate page. This will give Co-ordinators opportunity to reallocate any transcription work given to the deleted volunteers. As this is a two way exercise, I would highly recommend to all Co-ordinators they check their "Upload Reports" via http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/upload-report.pl in conjunction with "Show file" at: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/show-file.pl to establish if long standing allocations to their volunteers have been transcribed and uploaded to FreeBMD. I have assumed this process to be part of the checking process adopted by all Co-ordinators. This check should identify volunteers who registered a while ago but have not uploaded any files.
