It looks like the first is where we got our existing data from (I haven't checked the values). The second would be what we want except that it only gives data per year, not per quarter. I have emailed ONS requesting the information. A fairly accurate number of birth records for 1938 March Births is 159607. Derived from 1057 pages in the Index for this quarter multiplied by 151 (entries per page) Why 151? The reason turns out to be that, for Births, we only have totals from the GRO up to 1937. For Marriages and Deaths we have the totals up to 1983. Since the graphs are percentages, not having the total makes it kinda difficult! I have no idea how we got the totals from the GRO but I will investigate. Thanks to a message off-list from Barrie the mystery has been resolved. A transcriber had labelled a file as 1922B2 whereas it was really from 1931B2. During this last month the transcriber corrected it. As it was the first page of a run, it had a few lines less than 150, to accommodate the letter at the top of the page. Someone is going to ask me this question in the next few hours, so can someone else please help me with a ready answer? My Syndicate has been busying away at 1938 March Births for 6-7 weeks, and we have collectively uploaded around 235 page files (35,000 records), around 23% of the Quarter. And yet the chart at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/progressB.shtml#1930 suggests we haven't done a stroke of work, and shows zero. The chart itself must be out of sync, as a random check - on just a couple of records uploaded by me - shows they are indeed in the database. So how come a discrepancy like that? Richard Oliver Madrid, Spain richol@arrakis.es
Is there any way that co-ordinators can discover any files that have been deleted from FreeBMD? I have a puzzling decrease of 147 entries in one quarter (1922B2) in my syndicate's latest 'Syndicate Information' since the last Update, as if one file has been deleted, but I can't immediately work out which. Short of doing a new upload report on the whole quarter, is there a way of discovering this? Jeff
I am glad you and Richard have managed to find a way for Richard to read your files. However, it is important to note that doing it this way Richard must _not_ upload the the files using WinBMD (or edit the files using WinBMD). The character coding has not been converted and subtle errors can be introduced into the transcriptions. Just a line of thanks to Derek, Barrie and the others who helped my new recruit adapt her Linux operating system, getting it to work with WinBMD, BMDVerify and the rest. Her submitterID is "dreamstogo" which seems very apt - and her transcribing technique is awesomely accurate too! Richard Oliver Madrid, Spain richol@arrakis.es
Whilst Wordpad will obviously work that does not help Hilary (who is using Linux) to send valid files to Richard (although it does help Richard). Actually the at the start of the file is the Unicode Byte Order Mark (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode) so the problem is that OO is saving the file in Unicode (UTF-8) rather than ISO8859-1 as required by WinBMD. This happens because Linux saves the file in Unicode and presumably OO is just continuing with the existing encoding. If when saving the file in OO you select the type as "Text Encoded (.txt)" you get the option to select the encoding. Select Character Code as "Western Europe (ISO-8859-1)". That should do it! Hi Derek, Thank you for your feedback. So, the OO route is not OK. As I said to Richard this morning, I do not think that it should be up to the recipient of a file to "correct" it for his platform. It should just work. I have sent emails to Andrew Higgs, the developer of LinBMD, o ask him what he thinks of this. I am waiting for his reply. Your confirmation that FreeBMD has no problem is interesting. Again, thank you for your help. Notepad does not accept UNIX end of line convention so it is useless in this context. Whilst Wordpad can indeed add formatting information if used as I suggested it does work. The key is to use Save As "Text document" which happens automatically if there is no extension or the extension is .BMD. There are numerous other ways of doing the conversion (I use unix2dos) but using Wordpad is the simplest way I know that avoids having to acquire additional software. Hi Hilary While yes it does fix the cr lf problem ir also add 4 characters at the start and one at the end to identify as a office file. WinBMD looks for the +INFO which must be the first characters in the file. +INFO,hilary.bh.wright@gmail.com,password,SEQUENCED,BIRTHS #,9z,Hilary Wright,Richard Oliver,1938B1C0212.bmd,03-May-2009,N,N,N,C,0 So this solution will not work FreeBMD and Wordpad have no problem with the Linux file It is just notepad and WinBMD. But any one witha PC can solve this by simply opening in Wordpad and resaving "Save As" this fixes the problem on the PC and is what I have always done. MAC files sent to me often have a similar problem. At 06/05/2009 01:37 AM, you wrote: >Hello Derek, > >Here is the linBMD file with CR+LF. Hello Barrie, WordPad is also very capable of adding other formatting that make the file completely useless. The only safe way is to use Notepad. This will convert the Unix end of line (LF) to Windows end of line (CR/LF) and you will then be able to open the file in WinBMD. Wordpad is a standard utility on Windows. To run it go to Start/Run and type wordpad. Barrie P.S. There are basically three operating systems in use (Windows, MacOS and Unixes) and they each use a different end of line convention. Given that there are only three possible ways to do end of line (with the characters CR and LF), one could consider this something of an achievement for the computer industry! > A new recruit to my Syndicate, quite promising in all other respects, has a computer operating with Linux (whatever that may be) and is using "LinBMD" for transcribing. Hello Richard I have no experience of Linux but I guess the problem is that the file sent to you for checking does not have a .BMD extension. In other respects the file should be the same composition as a typical Windows type WinBMD file. I suggest you save the file sent to you. Next in Windows Explorer (My Computer) rename the file from, for example 1897B1X0055 to 1897B1X0055.BMD Or you could open the original file 1897B1X0055 in Notepad and resave it as 1897B1X0055.BMD which would give you the confidence that all is well because you could see the file is OK in notepad. good luck Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Oliver To: freebmd-syndicates@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, May 04, 2009 14:05 Subject: "Linux" A new recruit to my Syndicate, quite promising in all other respects, has a computer operating with Linux (whatever that may be) and is using "LinBMD" for transcribing.
